    Canadians! Best site to shop?

I live in Brandon Manitoba. Here is an amusing story about where the hell is Manitoba. I was in a men's clothing store in a shopping mall in Los Angeles buying a jacket. The clerk asked me where I was from because he said I had an accent. I wasn't aware that I had an accent, and it was the...

Tom Cruise speaks out about the Soap Opera Effect

Mark-P is correct. The Oppo player is zooming the image. The options are stretch, full, 1.2x, 1.3x, 1.5x, and 2x. I rarely use these options as I prefer the original aspect ratio.

Tom Cruise speaks out about the Soap Opera Effect

I don't understand why you are unable to change the aspect ratio on your Blu-rays. I can change the aspect ratio on 1:33 Blu-rays to a variety of different ratios. I'm using an older Oppo player on an even older Panasonic plasma TV.

HDR, Why wasn’t dynamic range an issue before?

The movie studios could add HDR to Blu-ray releases too, but I'm quite sure that's not going to happen.

Pre-Order The Big Country (1958) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

I watched the old MGM Blu-ray once many years ago and noticed the stretching right away. When an actor moved into the center of the picture their head width would stretch (fathead), and then correct itself when they moved back to the side of the image. It's funny what people notice as I don't...

Crawdaddy's "Random Thoughts" about Home Video, Film & TV

I'm happy for you Robert that your discs in Vol, 4 play fine. Unfortunately for me, DECOY will not play even though the running time counter on my player (Oppo BDP 103) shows the elapsed time of the movie. While using the chapter stops to advance the film, at 1h. and 1m. the movie will start to...

Crawdaddy's "Random Thoughts" about Home Video, Film & TV

I did just that last year, "Decoy" and "The Big Steal" from Film Noir Collection Vol. 4 won't play anymore. They were fine when I played them many years ago.

A PEEK AT 78/52, HARPER, AND FAREWELL, MY LOVELY/THE BIG SLEEP

The Big Sleep (1978) seems to get quite a few negative comments, but I like the film. The plot is easier to follow in the newer version, and according to some is closer to the novel ( excepting the London location) which I have not read. However the original Big Sleep is a favorite of mine.

Crawdaddy's "Random Thoughts" about Home Video, Film & TV

I've slacked off disc viewing since the current baseball season started in Spring. I follow all the teams, so I see parts of games almost every day. I am retired, but still there are not enough hours in a day for sports, movies, and family. I watch perhaps 1 or sometimes 2 discs a week if I'm...

What Happened To Olive's Signature Series?

I have the original Olive Blu-ray of High Noon, and had thought that I would upgrade to the Olive Select version, but it was way too expensive at Amazon Canada. Currently they are asking $52.22 for it, $59.01 after taxes. The good news is you get free shipping!

CUT! A discussion of films with different cuts on blu-ray...

Payback (1999) starring Mel Gibson is a unique example of two different cuts of a film. The director Brian Helgeland was taken off the film by Paramount and Mel Gibson who was also the producer, and then years later they gave Helgeland the opportunity to construct a new director's cut. There are...

Borrowing from public library - DVD vs blu-ray

Reading this thread has given me the idea of donating a bunch of DVD's to my local library. The last time I was in the library was more than 40 years ago, and they have moved twice since then, I have about 300 to 400 DVD's I've upgraded to Blu-ray that I never use, as well as maybe a dozen BD's...

3D Why keep fighting for 3-D, even if you're not a fan!

Is there a correlation with the loss of 3D in LG's 2017 OLED TV's, and a 25% brighter picture in the 2017 displays? I would assume that brighter pictures are desired for a bigger HDR effect.

3D Why keep fighting for 3-D, even if you're not a fan!

I will buy an OLED when my beloved plasma is done. The only negative thing I've read is that motion artifacts are more noticable on OLED than on a good top end plasma. I've also read that LG's 2017 OLED's are 25% brighter than last year's model.

AMAZON.COM overnight astronomical increase in Import Fees

Importcds never did reply. I waited four weeks before contacting them the first time about my order, and then about two weeks later the second time, and another two weeks for the third and final attempt. It was obvious they had no interest in my order, after all they had been paid. I can...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

If Amazon Canada has had a Kino Lorber sale in the past year, I've missed it. I would like to buy "Deadline USA" and "The Ox-Bow Incident" but I haven't yet because of the price. Both titles are $34.99 each as I post this at Amazon Canada and when you add taxes they come to $39.54 each for me...

Ongoing: Ron's Blu-Ray Discoveries Thread (renamed)

" Miller's Crossing " is probably my favorite Coen Brothers film among many good Coen films. As a huge film noir fan I would like to point out in case some people don't know, that certain plot elements of Miller's Crossing are lifted from the 1942 Universal film " The Glass Key " which was based...
