7.1 and 6.1 vs 5.1? Do you like surround modes > 5.1? Speaker placement?

How old is the receiver? I'm not 100% sure what "THX 7.1" is, but I would imagine it's more of a matrixed decoder, kind of like PLII or IIx. I personally wouldn't bank on one outdated receiver to determine the validity of 7.1 surround sound. In my own setup, I have my surround back speakers...

7.1 and 6.1 vs 5.1? Do you like surround modes > 5.1? Speaker placement?

First of all, there are no discrete 7.1 formats (with the possible exeption of TrueHD and DD+). There is a DTS-ES 6.1 format, but in 7.1, the 2 surround back speakers are generally mono. I don't really use any DSP modes, but I do use PLIIx with 5.1 to give me 7.1. It works great. The other day I...

    Speaker Mounts

Here's a place with the best deal I've ever seen on Omnimounts. seen:http://www.sjgreatdeals.com/20-0-wall-b.html I can't vouch for the quality of the dealer, though, since I haven't ever done business with them.

    Speaker Mounts

You will be sorry (as I am) if you skimp on speaker mounts. My B&W DM600 S3s are not even 10 pounds, so I figured buying mounts rated at 20 lbs. would be plenty strong and I found some that were really cheap. But I also found that you get what you pay for. I really had to crank the holding screw...

    Frank Miller's 300 (merged)

I have a sort of unrelated question (but related because it all started by reading this thread) for those who have read the book, Gates of Fire. I bought this book after reading some reviews of it early on in this thread, and because I wanted to read it to get an overview of the history...

    Need help deciding on DVDP

As I understand it, Denon switched from Faroudja to Realta chips (this year) because Faroudja chips just aren't as cutting edge as they used to be. Faroudja used to be the reference by which all others were measured, but there are now others out there (like Realta) that are just hands down...

    help me choose which pj

Doesn't a "soffit" generally run the perimeter of a room, or was this something done to accommodate a heating/air duct? No matter. How wide is this soffit? Since you say the the projector would be mounted "beside" the soffit, I'm assuming that it is almost half the width of th room. If that's...

    standard broadcast vs. dolby digital

I concur with Jeff. It does make a "HUGE" difference. Just because the specs say your receiver delivers equal power to all channels doesn't mean you'll have exactly the same volume coming out of each channel. They may differ vastly. And even if there is equal volume coming from each speaker, it...

    Multichannel audio question

Yes. Unless you have one of the players, which features Denon Link (2930 or higher), you will need to use analog audio cables for SACD. This is not Denon's fault, however (unless you fault them for not using Denon Link in lower-end products), it's Sony's for hesitating to support HDMI from the...

I'm having a hard time picturing this room in my mind. Can you provide a photo or even a crude drawing? Perhaps then we can provide more intelligent recommendations and suggestions. I have an AE900. Excellent machine!

    DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

Probably, but I got the 2-disc special edition and I know it isn't encoded in EX (let alone ES), whereas EX encoding extends across all editions of LOTR.

    Projector Placement help

If you have potential issues with projector placement, then you should perhaps consider going with a projector that is more versatile and has a lens shift. With this feature, you will be able to make the beam clear your soffit more easily and you will be able match the image up to the screen...

    Another Speaker Placement question

What are you using for speakers? Large bookshelfs? It's perfectly acceptable to have speakers below the screen, but I would use speaker stands to do it - e.g. I wouldn't sit the center channel (or mains, if they are bookshelfs) directly on the floor. It doesn't really matter whether the speakers...

    DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

But there again is my point - how come (do you think) Jackson didn't give King Kong the extended surround treatment he afforded to LOTR? Given the stunning visuals and exciting action sequences in KK, it seems like it was a wasted opportunity. Are studios and filmakers holding out on SD...

    DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing

Okay...so I just reorganized all my DVDs (my meager 250 count) by audio encoding, just to see what I've got. As it turns out, I have 30 DTS (5.1) discs, 13 DD EX discs and a whole 3 DTS ES discs - Die Another Day, Running Man and Rush Hour 2. The rest are regular DD 5.1, 2.0 or mono. It...

    Sanyo PLV-Z5 LCD Projector

You would have to be sitting at less than 9ft. to really notice any pixelation with the Z5, so it would probably be a good choice for you. Of course it all depends on how big your screen size will be, as well. You should be fine with just about any screen size up to around 120" or so, at 14ft...

    Sanyo PLV-Z5 LCD Projector

I don't own one, but I know first-hand that it is an exceptional projector and that it would be hard to go wrong with it. I was considering Z4, but went with a competing model, only because I would be sitting at borderlined close proximity to the screen, at which distance pixelation (seeing...

Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!

As a matter of fact it does say "Dolby Surround" on the jacket of most of my Laserdiscs, but I thought that it only applied if it was connected via the analog RCA jacks. I thought the digital PCM track was straight stereo. Hm...learn something new everyday. That would explain some things.

Dolby PLIIx - How Do It Know???!

Okay...so I'm sitting there, yesterday, watching Desperado which I haven't seen in about a decade, on Laserdisc. I don't have an RF modulator, so that I can listen to DD encoded LDs in discrete 5.1 (Desperado isn't), so I feed the PCM stereo track via optical out to my receiver and give it the...

    using digital audio

The solution is pretty simple: Connect your DVD player to the receiver using Toslink (optical), and connect your cable box to the receiver using digital coax (the RCA-looking one). You can do it the other way around, too. You don't need the ones on your TV, if you aren't using your TV speakers...

$4,000 to spend on a projector.

I have the AX100 predecessor, the AE900 and I LOVE it. It is a great projector. I believe the main difference between them is almost twice the lumens output for the AX100. Now, I have recently seen the AX100 and the AE1000 (Panasonic's 1080p offering for $3999) in action on the same 1080p HD...

    Couple ?s about projector hook-up . . .

...to summarize, running HDMI will be your surest bet for both 720p and 1080p projectors. I personally only have one run of HDMI from my receiver to my projector. Everything else (all video) runs through my receiver.

    Receiver or just settings?

The Klipsch Reference are nice speakers. When selling electronics, I sold a LOT of Klipsch speakers. Not because I pushed or manipulated anybody that way (profit margin on all speaker brands is pretty fat, and I was not the pushy type), but because that is what most people liked when they heard...
