I don't buy it. If you look at the coming soon section there are just too many unlikely titles (for example all seasons of The Simpsons) without any dates or information. To me it looks like nothing more than Amazon's notification placeholders.
I hope they just scrap it all and license the Italian restoration, because from that description I have a hard time imagining how it could be anywhere near as good. I've never understood the idea of doing something yourself when someone else has already done it much better.
Kind of. Take a look at the row of shots at the bottom here. The second shot is how it should have looked, the fourth one is how it actually looks on the Blu-ray.
I will still be disappointed if the US theatrical cut isn't included, however if it's from a new master that looks as good as the Italian restored editions of the earlier films (and they do look absolutely fantastic) then I'll pay any price for it, regardless. Hoping MGM gets English editions...
I recently listened to an interview with Terry Gilliam. Upon being asked how he felt about his old films, he said that when he watched them he was often left surprised, wondering who had actually made them, because the Terry Gilliam he was then isn't the same person as the Terry Gilliam he is...
Is this something new, or is it just the audio reconstruction featurette again? Other than the Frayling commentary it seems to be the same package as the previous DVDs. Hopefully it'll look as good as it deserves to, but I'm preparing to be disappointed.
I think Blu-ray is slightly more efficient when it comes to running times though, even in reasonably high quality. 3½ hours on one DVD is not a great idea, but on BD it's doable. For example they should easily be able to fit all of the Mickey Mouse colour cartoons on two discs instead of...
Will be interesting to see how these hold up in HD. The quadrilogy transfers are already quite a few years old and I don't suppose they've done new ones since then.
I would love this, if only for the fact that they'd have to go back and properly re-transfer all the shorts, unlike with the DVDs, where they just stopped bothering after a couple of waves (which not-so-incidentally was also the point where I stopped buying them.) I don't see it happening for...
Looks like they could be similar to the I Am Legend UCE box. I'm sure they'll be nice, but as with Casablanca I'm not buying unless they also offer a regular edition for a sane price.
According to Gary, the restoration on the Italian Blu-ray was carried out by Cineteca di Bologna. Some searching reveals that they also did a photochemical/digital restoration from original negatives of For a Few Dollars More, so likely the same process was used here. Unfortunately the...
I agree that the caps look fantastic. I bought the Sergio Leone Anthology last year, but I cannot wait for MGM/Fox to release the films again on Blu-ray. Hopefully they will look equally good with original mono tracks all around. Also hoping for Scorsese's restoration of Once Upon a Time in the...
But Paramount apparently didn't feel there was any need to give Europeans the same special treatment because judging by the specs on the box it looks as if the mono tracks have been dropped; it only lists French and German. Also the thing is unnecessarily huge. Four of the UK-style, fat...
It's too bad, but it's what happens when you do processing to this degree, and some of those errors are bound to slip through. I think I saw some line art missing on the raven's foot in one of the shots in the DVD Beaver review, although that could have been from the original painting too.
I very much doubt it. There's no question it will be from the same transfer, and in that case the only thing they could improve on is compression, and I don't think the HD DVD was particularly bad in that respect. Doesn't look like there are any significant new extras either.
I think saying "practically everything" is 480i is a bit of an overstatement. By far most of it is, but there have been a lot of digital shows animated in HD in the last five or so years, particularly some of the bigger shows from the bigger studios (Production IG, Sunrise, etc.), and it's of...
I'm definitely buying it. The $50 price is much better than the $80 they charged for Honneamise and Jin-Roh, and Bandai discounts are over 40% in some stores so it's not going to be that much more expensive than some of the $40 Hollywood titles. And for a new transfer? Heck, I'd pay a higher...
The biggest problems I have with this whole thing is the inconsistent usage, outdated excuses, and singling out of the home video format. If Storaro believes the 2.00:1 ratio is so magical and great then why didn't he use it for the creation of Apocalypse Now Redux? But no, it's only the home...
Nice, the Smilebox version doesn't look as disturbing as I had expected, in fact I kind of like it. But the overall restoration, wow, from those shots I must say it looks fantastic.
I have. Tartan released an NTSC DVD of Battle Royale in the UK way back, possibly to aid importing as Toei refused to have the movie released in the US. Incidentally it was also the best English-language version for years, and maybe still is, as the PAL releases all had bad ghosting due to the...
They'd have to be profoundly stupid to try to remove the grain on this, however I do wonder what the "remastered" refers to since it was finished on DI; not a whole lot to do there really. Hopefully it's just marketing. I'm also curious about the DTS-HD MA, does this mean Warner isn't doing...
