Sadly these Fathom events in my experience have been disappointing at least in the theaters here in Richmond, Va. I would have to agree with vintage films I am happier with my 4K system and surround sound at home (and this is none too fancy) for watching things like MY FAIR LADY.
Even sadder my...
Sigh.... wonderful review. When I went with a Sony OLED four years ago I gave up 3-D which I had on a Panasonic plasma. Projectors are not possible here unfortunately. I do still own the HUGO 3-D disc and was lucky enough to see it in a theater. Not sure if and when new displays will be...
Glad to see THE SEARCHERS and NORTH BY NORTHWEST being restored. For those of us who cannot make it to the festival can only hope 4K discs of both are in the offing. Ah.... VistaVision!!!!
Mr Strohmaier---
Thanks so much for all that you have done to preserve not only the Cinerama films but in being an advocate for film preservation over the years. I was recently reading Ron Haver's book about A STAR IS BORN and was pleased and surprised to find your name mentioned as having a...
Given that most of Kubrick's films have now been released on 4K disc, is BARRY LYNDON on 4K a possibility? Even if the film itself, given the way it was shot, is not fully 4K, certainly HDR or Dolby Vision carefully applied would be an upgrade. Thoughts? Rumors?
One of the tragedies of her career was not getting to play Nellie in SOUTH PACIFIC. Gaynor is OK, but I think Day would have given the role more depth.
Meh to the tenth power. As a 70 year old boomer of course I loved the Beatles. But the endless repackaging and reselling of the group gets more and more ridiculous every year. From the Anthology cds several years ago to the endless Peter Jackson version of LET IT BE and now this they have...
Mr. Furmanek---just sampled the new ROBOT MONSTER disc and was very impressed. When I still had a plasma tv I was able to view 3-D movies with active shutter glasses and the results were spectacular. I enjoyed the discs you created with archival footage as well as things like KISS ME KATE and...
Sadly never saw it in 70mm and odds are rather against that being available again. But thrilled we are getting the 4K disc as the current Blu Ray is certainly lacking.
I thought the finale worked very well especially ending up the Lenny Bruce thread very nicely. To finally get to Mrs. Maisel's big moment was gratifying. Most questions were resolved---except what Gordon Ford's wife had on him that she could call in a favor. Sorry to see this one go---not...
I just watched the 4K EAST OF EDEN and was somewhat disappointed. WarnerColor was always problematic and while some shots do look great much of the film looks no better than the previous Blu Ray. This is one of my personal favorites less for Dean than Kazan's amazing use of Cinemascope.
I flew to Dayton for the weekend from Richmond, Va to see THIS IS CINERAMA and HOW THE WEST WAS WON. Truly a once in a lifetime experience and also great to be around a group of people who were similarly fascinated by widescreen cinema. However to this day my friends and family cannot fathom...
This film has been a hot potato tossed around for decades with the Goldwyn and Gershwin estates often at odds and even within those entities there were bitter disputes. Consider too that even in 1959 the film was branded as racist. In our current climate I can't imagine it would be viewed with...
It apparently will play pretty much any disc you can find. Mostly I have noticed better video and audio quality than the X700. This is paired with a newly acquired Yamaha RX-V385 5.1 amp and a Sony 90J OLED. Not sure that the X700 is missing any major features that the 800 has. I would say...
And a dud it is. A few months ago I saw STAR! in 70mm, naively thinking maybe in that format it might play better. But it pretty much stinks on ice though it has its fans.
I have had both the 700 and the 800. I started with the 700 which was good but ran into a few issues, mostly with sound synch and occasional problems with Dolby Vision. I replaced it recently with the 800 and have been impressed with the improvement in image processing as well as better audio...
Thanks John. Based on what I have seen online about synch issues when things are configured as I have without the new receiver, turning off HDMI controls, any unneeded processing, etc. This seems to have stopped the synch issues for now. It does appear sound synch issues are not uncommon. It...
Given that I live in a small condo Atmos is not in the cards. 5.1 is really about as far as I can go. What I am trying to determine is a solution for the recurring issue of the sound going out of synch. Maybe there is another forum which specifically discusses this but I have not been able to...
I have a Sony 90J OLED, a Sony 4K UBPX700 player, and a Yamaha HTR-3066 surround sound system. As the amp does not pass through 4K I am connecting the audio from the player directly to the amp via HDMI and video directly to tv, also by HDMI. In the last nine months or so I keep having problems...
