I agree with Will. The film in motion is completely different than the screencaps making the rounds. And compare the colors in the Criterion transfer to the colors in the trailer, and also the DVD film clips included in the old (FANTASTIC!) John Waters interview. There are a lot of bold, cherry...
I think it’s a noticeable improvement over the Criterion. Brighter, sharper, and much, much more colorful with finer grain. But it is one of my favorite films and I must have spun that Criterion disc about 20 times. Weirdly, I think I prefer the 5.1 mix on the Criterion over this. The Criterion...
I’m spinning the 4K disc now via projector on a 180” screen and it looks AMAZING. Fine grain, deep, rich colors, and inky blacks. It now looks like it was filmed on a budget! Severin knocked it out of the park.
If is truly amazing what they were able to do with upscaling the original master 2" PAL tapes with their 600-line resolution into 1080, and digging out and rescanning the 16mm parts in true 1080 HD. My mind is blown. In think this is one of the year’s best releases.
Was that what you wanted me to check? I’m really looking forward to spending time with this box and those books. Again, really impressed with the packaging of this set. It truly feels exhaustive.
Got my set today from Amazon. Not a bump or a scratch on the box, it arrived in absolutely pristine condition. But enough about cheap cardboard packaging...the episodes themselves look AMAZING and each of the 4 seasons comes with an exhaustive 200-page book. So that’s 800 pages covering every...
My favorite take-away is when Lee Kline is asked about a possible upgrade to David Lean’s SUMMERTIME (Criterion has released it previously on Laserdisc and DVD), Kline responds ”It needs an upgrade, I think it will come out at some point, and…uh…God, SUMMERTIME would look fantastic from the...
I sincerely hope that Paramount changes its mind and at least offers up the 2 channel track as an option. I’ll be OK with a new remix if it stays true to the original stereo - a perfect example being how Rocky Horror’s 5.1 track carefully followed the mix and balance of the original mono by...
I had those Criterion laser-discs and for POLYESTER, they reprinted the scratch-n-sniff cards at the original size and it was easily slipped into the laser-disc packaging. What would they do now? Diminutive little scratch-n-sniffs?
Over at The Quietus site, there's an interview with Waters...
Is there a possibility of any more Criterions coming out?
Well, if there is, I'm not really allowed to talk about it. You ask if there's a possibility - well, the answer to that would always be yes. Because... anything's possible...
There's an article about the death of the midnight movie on Vanity Fair's website and they quote John Waters and add that PINK FLAMINGOS is available as "part of a Criterion Collection set." Um, it's not...yet. I was going to dismiss it as an editorial error - the Criterion MULTIPLE MANIACS...
Hey, an update on the transfer: Mill Creek's sell sheet for the disc reads "All new HD transfer - first time available on Blu-Ray." It's retailing for $14.98, but I pre-ordered it on Amazon and got it for $8.99! New HD transfer! I'm very excited!
I hope he's doing better too. BTVD is a movie that has given me much joy over the years. I am very happy to hear that it is headed to Blu in the next year or two.
I'd love to see a Blu-Ray release/upgrade of "The Ruling Class" (already in the Criterion Collection on DVD) and Kenneth Lonergan's "You Can Count on Me" which is one of my favorite films of the 2000s. It was produced by Scorsese and has never been released on Blu-Ray. It seems perfect for...
