Press Release Criterion Press Release: The Girl Can't Help It (1956) (Blu-ray)

I agree with Will. The film in motion is completely different than the screencaps making the rounds. And compare the colors in the Criterion transfer to the colors in the trailer, and also the DVD film clips included in the old (FANTASTIC!) John Waters interview. There are a lot of bold, cherry...

A few words about...™ Harold and Maude (Paramount Presents) -- in Blu-ray

I think it’s a noticeable improvement over the Criterion. Brighter, sharper, and much, much more colorful with finer grain. But it is one of my favorite films and I must have spun that Criterion disc about 20 times. Weirdly, I think I prefer the 5.1 mix on the Criterion over this. The Criterion...

Blood For Dracula Severin Films 4K UHD

I tried to post a pic but it posted twice and now I’m running into some kind of security issue. Anyhoo, it looks fantastic.

Blood For Dracula Severin Films 4K UHD

I’m spinning the 4K disc now via projector on a 180” screen and it looks AMAZING. Fine grain, deep, rich colors, and inky blacks. It now looks like it was filmed on a budget! Severin knocked it out of the park.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Restored for Blu Ray

One of the guys who worked on this restoration tweeted a pic indicating that he is currently working on “And Now For Something Completely Different.”

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Restored for Blu Ray

If is truly amazing what they were able to do with upscaling the original master 2" PAL tapes with their 600-line resolution into 1080, and digging out and rescanning the 16mm parts in true 1080 HD. My mind is blown. In think this is one of the year’s best releases.

Yes, no problem seeing the episode I’m selecting.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Restored for Blu Ray

Was that what you wanted me to check? I’m really looking forward to spending time with this box and those books. Again, really impressed with the packaging of this set. It truly feels exhaustive.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Restored for Blu Ray

Both discs look fine to me. The episodes are listed in black font that turn dark green when selected.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus Restored for Blu Ray

Got my set today from Amazon. Not a bump or a scratch on the box, it arrived in absolutely pristine condition. But enough about cheap cardboard packaging...the episodes themselves look AMAZING and each of the 4 seasons comes with an exhaustive 200-page book. So that’s 800 pages covering every...

Podcast HTF Podcast Episode 5: Visiting Criterion Collection

My favorite take-away is when Lee Kline is asked about a possible upgrade to David Lean’s SUMMERTIME (Criterion has released it previously on Laserdisc and DVD), Kline responds ”It needs an upgrade, I think it will come out at some point, and…uh…God, SUMMERTIME would look fantastic from the...

Pre-Order Grease (1978) (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

I sincerely hope that Paramount changes its mind and at least offers up the 2 channel track as an option. I’ll be OK with a new remix if it stays true to the original stereo - a perfect example being how Rocky Horror’s 5.1 track carefully followed the mix and balance of the original mono by...

Criterion John Waters set coming soon?

I had those Criterion laser-discs and for POLYESTER, they reprinted the scratch-n-sniff cards at the original size and it was easily slipped into the laser-disc packaging. What would they do now? Diminutive little scratch-n-sniffs?

Criterion John Waters set coming soon?

I take the Vanity Fair piece, The Quietus interview, and Waters' own comments this past weekend as kind of a definitive "yes."

Criterion John Waters set coming soon?

Over at The Quietus site, there's an interview with Waters... Is there a possibility of any more Criterions coming out? Well, if there is, I'm not really allowed to talk about it. You ask if there's a possibility - well, the answer to that would always be yes. Because... anything's possible...

Criterion John Waters set coming soon?

There's an article about the death of the midnight movie on Vanity Fair's website and they quote John Waters and add that PINK FLAMINGOS is available as "part of a Criterion Collection set." Um, it's not...yet. I was going to dismiss it as an editorial error - the Criterion MULTIPLE MANIACS...

    The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T - 6/7

Hey, an update on the transfer: Mill Creek's sell sheet for the disc reads "All new HD transfer - first time available on Blu-Ray." It's retailing for $14.98, but I pre-ordered it on Amazon and got it for $8.99! New HD transfer! I'm very excited!

Sony restored the film about five years ago. I would assume (and hope) that will be the restoration that is used.

What would you like to see next from criterion?

I'd love to see a Blu-Ray release/upgrade of "The Ruling Class" (already in the Criterion Collection on DVD) and Kenneth Lonergan's "You Can Count on Me" which is one of my favorite films of the 2000s. It was produced by Scorsese and has never been released on Blu-Ray. It seems perfect for...
