Criterion Press Release: It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (Dual Format)

Pre-ordered. I haven't seen this film since I was a kid and I'm sure that was a chopped up and edited TV version. Can't wait to revisit this classic in all it's glory.

What Blu-rays did you receive for the Holidays?

Hello, HTF. It's been years since I've posted anything here. At any rate, the only blu-ray I got for Christmas was Elysium. But in the following days I went out and bought World War Z, The Worlds End, and Hunger Games.

    120GB "Slim" PS3 officially announced

Just wanted to share a video with you folks, that may clear up a couple minor things. 1) There is NO external power supply or "brick" (ala the Xbox 360) despite what John Koller of Sony originally stated. That is clearly evident in the video I am going to post below. 2) The hard drive is...

The most annoying thing about Blu-Ray (sorry, it's another Warner Bros. thing!)

I couldn't disagree more. About wanting a menu at the beginning of a disc, anyway. I can see your point as far as configuring the sound goes, but I would much rather jump right into a movie, changing the sound option on the fly, and getting right into the film itself. No new menus, please.

    PS3 DTS-HD update available

You should be able to used the firmware burned to either a CD or DVD. It doesn't matter, as the PS3 reads both.

    Blu-ray Cases and "Cool Factor"

Oh my God, I hate those things! I almost feel like I need to get out a soldering iron to remove the damn things. It probably wouldn't be a big deal, but they block the back of the coverart, which often has the chapter listings.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Framing Issue

It's basically the scene where Captain Jack and Will Turner are sword fighting for the first time in the place Will does all his smithing, and they jump around on the beams, so on and so forth. Just before Jack gets caught for the first time. For the whole scene the top of the picture is cut...

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Framing Issue

I know for a fact that's the reason. At least according to the management of the customer service in charge of sending out the discs. I just got off the phone with them. I called in to make a complaint, as their customer service has really been lacking on this issue. It's been over a month...

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl Framing Issue

Wow. Disney is really starting to piss me off. After a month of waiting for them to just reply to my email, they finally (after about another week and a half) send me my "mailer." But it's just a label. And the instructions say to send the DVD along with it's case back to them, using the...

Is Blu-Ray Already Obsolete???----Now Comes XSTREAMHD

Could someone explain to me why everytime digital distribution is mentioned, it's always in the context of it being the dominant and sole means of watching movies in the future? The example people always bring up is i-tunes. Has i-tunes completely replaced cd's? Maybe in terms of profits, but...

Should WB and the BDA give HD DVD owners a "peace offering" to welcome them to Blu?

I have to say, David, I also don't understand this mindset that people are owed something because their side has seemingly lost. When you're an early adopter of any format, you're taking a gamble. That's the way it's always been. Don't get me wrong, I feel for the people who've invested a...

Should WB and the BDA give HD DVD owners a "peace offering" to welcome them to Blu?

I certainly don't disagree that could and probably will happen in many cases. However, they just don't have the numbers to make any format "sink." (I'm talking specifically of current HD DVD owners here.) I'm just saying, the BDA isn't going to worry about disgruntled HD DVD fans. Right or...

Should WB and the BDA give HD DVD owners a "peace offering" to welcome them to Blu?

I don't see this happening. And what's more, it's much more likely they would provide incentives and rebates to people who haven't adopted either format yet. Those are the people they're worried about, not current HD DVD owners. It's likely their mindset would be, "Well where else will HD DVD...

LOTR on Blu-Ray: would you buy the theatrical or wait for Extended Edition?

That's a tough question. While I loved the Extended editions of the films (especially Fellowship) I always like to have the original Theatrical releases of any film in my library. But if it does turn out to be an either/or situation, I think I'd probably wait for the Extended cuts and be...

Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I agree, that's something I really wish they'd address. I hate that the PS3 will upscale 480p content that's on a DVD, but it won't on 480p content from a BD.

Blu-ray Review HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Harry Potter Limited Edition Collection: Years 1-5

I'm only up to the 2nd film (Chamber of Secrets) but so far I'm extremely happy with the quality of these discs. What struck me right away is the natural film grain of the first 2 films Warner didn't attempt to "DNR" away. It's all intact, which should make film purists happy. I love these...

Blu-ray Review HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Harry Potter Limited Edition Collection: Years 1-5

I just got my set today and I can't wait to dig into it. I agree with you about the bookmarks - they're one of the highlights of the packaging. My only nit-pik about the whole affair is that it can be a bit cumbersome getting out an individual disc and putting everything else back in. So for...

Hot Fuzz 3-disc CE in November

Kind of ticks me off too. I loved the movie, but not enough to bite on such a blatant double dip. If I do re-buy this title, it will be in an HD format sometime in the future. I have the original DVD, and as long as it has the film that I love, that'll be good enough for now.

After almost a year, still glad to be sitting out format war

Not to beat a dead horse, but I also disagree. Unless you're talking about lower-end Sony products, which I agree at times have had problems. I include the original Playstation and Playstation 2 into that mix, as they were released with cheap parts (in the beginning anyways) in order to keep the...

After almost a year, still glad to be sitting out format war

Well, I said I wasn't going to jump into HD, but I have. I got a new HDTV and a PS3 recently. What I've found is that even though I think the PQ of HD discs are pretty incredible, it's the sound on these hi-def discs that are blowing me away. What a difference! Now I just have to decide...

    Rocky Balboa recap (SPOILERS)

I loved this movie so much. So very well done. It made me go out and buy the first 3 movies to see all over again. (It's been a few years.) And yes, I'll pick up IV and V to complete the set. Anyway, I agree Rocky Balboa was the perfect ending to the series.

After almost a year, still glad to be sitting out format war

I'm currently waiting to jump on the HD bandwagon for several reasons. Some clearly my own, some beyond my ability to control. 1) Cost. Hell, I don't even own an HDTV, yet. Though I do upscale SD DVD's on my Xbox 360 / VGA adapter / LCD monitor set up. It's a poor man's HDTV, and I know this...

Oblivion - including The Shivering Isles

I know it's been awhile, but I started my game up again over the weekend, and played for about 28 more hours. But what's really prompted me to post is the announcement of the Shivering isles expansion pack due later this year. I'm sure many know of this already, but I thought worth mentioning...

The 'Packys' What TV ON DVD Truly Has The Best Overall Presentation?

I also have to give props to the first 5 seasons of the Simpsons. And really, the others that came after and were available in the "non-Simpson-head" packages were good also. They get the nod particularly for the incredibly enormous content they've packed into each set. These sets are truly...

    JAMES BOND ULTIMATE COLLECTION

But he's absolutely right. The fact of the matter is, these films, these DVD's - look outstanding. If there is a millimeter out of place in a shot or two, it in no way hampers or should hamper anyone's enjoyment of these sets. If thinking that way is thread farting, well add me to the list of...

    JAMES BOND ULTIMATE COLLECTION

They both look round to me too. Now I could get out a protractor and find a millimeter or 2 of variance but really...why would I do that when there's no outwardly discernible difference? I swear to God, people really take this stuff a bit too far at times.
