    Hardware requirements.

I'll basicly use it as a DVR with time shift, so I plan on playing back video recorded to the HD, but I'll stull use my normal DVD player for disc play back. I do intend on using it to archive recordings though. The TV I have is just a normal CRT flat screen with component jacks, so I don't need...

    Hardware requirements.

I'm looking at building an HTPC and I wan't to know what parts of the system are taxed the most. For instance, would it be worthwhile spending the extra cash on a dual core processor, or would something as slow (and cheap) as a Celeron D at 2.5 GHz, be plenty of chip? Will DDR2 make a large...

    quality sound cards

well i heard from a few people (have not personally verified) that the SB audigy's when hooked up through the optical port would not transmit anything other then 2 channels. You had to use the component jacks to get surround sound. Just did some research on it. Appearently Creative uses a...

    quality sound cards

I'm building up a HTPC and I need help picking a sound card. I would just use a high end Soundblaster, but those cards don't support bitstream through the optical port. The only way to get 6.1 or above from it is through component audio. I heard that Yamaha made some good ones. Any ideas?

    HTIB question

A little while back I managed to find an Onkyo 6.1 HT system for a really good price. The more I listen to it, the more I realize that it would be a perfect gift for my parents as they really like listening to music. Unfortunatly, I can no longer find this particular system for the price I got...

    New Subwoofer box design

why would you want to race with that much extra weight in there anyway? You do know it's 100 lbs per tenth in the quarter

    Moving out, need advice

do what i'm doing. I bought a refurbished Onkyo 770 6.1 system from ecost.com for $280 shipped. It's near $500 brand new and is enough system to last me a while. From there I will upgrade the speakers until the AVR becomes the weak point, then upgrade it. It does have preouts, so it will take a...

Do you force Dolby EX for ALL DD soundtracks?

I tend to force EX for all my 5.1 movies. I've found that now I'm used to that center rear surround channel, the sound feels empty when it's missing. To my knowledge EX and Neo use the same matrix encoding as Prologic II uses to generate a center channel. I also heard that DTS actualy purchased...

Small Screen video players - Does anybody care?

i actually see this as people trying to make new technology practical instead of new technology making things practical. The miniturization and low power consumption will continue to get cheaper and work it's way into everything. A small LCD may not be all that great for watching movies on a...

    Dts 6.1?

yea, stupid me. Went into the player's setup menu and for some reason DTS was set to PCM instead of bitstream while DD was already set right. It's running discrete now. Thanks guys

    Dts 6.1?

well i think the coax i'm using is a crappy one. It's the one that came with my 4.1 computer speakers. The reciever is a Onkyo HT-R520 and the DVD player is a Panasonic F-65. The only Movie I have that is DTS ES is Blade Trinity I have yet to try the DVD with coax VS optical, I noticed...

    Dts 6.1?

yea, 5.1 works like a champ in standard 5.1, DD EX and DTS ES matrix. It's just the discrete center surround. I'll try a digital coax and see what it does. I was using digital coax between my Cable reciever and the HT reciever and I noticed a huge increase in quality when when I switched it...

    Dts 6.1?

My reciever is capable of decoding both DD ETX and DTS ES (discrete and matrix). My DVD player is rated to decode both DTS and Dolby digital. The problem is when I have a disc that supports DTS ES discrete, the reciever will not recognize the digital encoding. If I switch it back (through the...

    configuration guide

Now I have my HT all set up and kind of dialed in, I was wondering if anyone knew of some resources that gave good instructions for dialing in reciever settings and for room layout managment to get the best possible sound. I could try google, but I'd rather have one recomended to me that is...

    Repairing internet connection ?

might sound stupid, but reset the router/cable modem by pulling the plug and plugging it back in. Then make sure all the network settings are for DHCP. It could also be a firewall being too agressive, so if there is one with that anti-virus package, try disabling it. You won't get hacked in the...

    slow build

yea, I found actually dialing in the speaker distances helped a ton and I got better performace when I dropped the crossover frequency. I'm having trouble finding a good place for the sub. The wall it is on only hits one other wall which has about 5 inches of wall before hitting a sliding...

    slow build

well the refurb price was too good to pass up. Shipping was $70 but the box was the size of a small refridgerator and weighed 100 lbs so I can see it costing that much. Anyway, I wasn't all that impressed until I got it dialed in and hooked up with the right cables. Dolby EX 6.1 is simply...

    slow build

If you search on ecost for onkyo 770 it gives 2 results. I'd post links, but for some stupid reason I'm not allowed. Is the only difference being one is refurbished?? Also, is that onkyo reciever pretty high quality?

    slow build

I'm sure this has been discussed a million times before, but my search didn't turn up much. I'm looking at building up a descent theater system for my apt. I already have a good DVD player so I'm looking for a reciever/speaker/sub setup. What I would like to do is build it up slowly, so maybe...
