Another (almost) first season purist here:
1 - Shore Leave
2- The City on the Edge of Forever
3- This Side of Paradise
4- Who Mourns for Adonais?
5- Arena
6- Amok Time
7- The Ultimate Computer
8 - Operation: Annihilate!
9 - Metamorphosis
10 - The Devil in the Dark
I'm a sucker for D C Fontana's...
I agree 100 percent with Travis' argument. And I don't necessarily paint Paramount as being "evil" for rectifying "The Fugitive" and now providing a facsimile of the David Pein "dream set" that most of us had wished had been released in the first place.
What I'm bothered by is the implication...
Amen to that, Gary! Every now and then a stellar release for a vintage show comes to the fore and this is definitely one of them. It'll be great revisiting with this superb cast of characters.
I'll chime in and trumpet Jeff''s list as well (long time, Jeff!) and would just swap out "Smoke Screen" for "The Other Side of the Mountain" or "Fatso". Sandy Dennis as "Cassie" in the former gave a bravura performance worthy of an Emmy IMO and well, I'm just a sucker for any dramatic role...
Wonderful news about the continuation of the "Rawhide" series, thanks for sharing that, Gary. Though not stalled anywhere near as long as HGWT was, I had become plenty concerned. I do hope they change the cover art, though. It's bad enough seeing Eastwood always front and center and Fleming...
Frontiere most definitely did not score any original music for "The Fugitive". That he was not credited for the use of cues from OL and SB does not surprise as this wasn't done on behalf of Herrmann, Goldsmith, F. Steiner, Rosenmann et. al. for the use of their music originally composed for TZ...
I wish I had gotten to know Mike Bailey a bit better and am still saddened over his untimely death at the hands of leukemia. I still fondly recall his sending me a nice email some years ago congratulating and welcoming me simply because I happened to be the first visitor to sign his guestbook...
When I spoke with someone at LaLaLand Records (they released OL music a couple of years back) I was informed that Stoney Burke would be next but it hasn't materialized. Can you recall an episode and scene in the Outer Limits where the music cue is heard?
Yes, I've also believed "The Rebel" had the best chance among the less well known westerns of making it to DVD for the reasons you stated and for all the accolades it has received on various internet sites. I managed to watch the first three episodes online (hulu, I believe) and knew I had...
Same here. And I also will not be surprised to see Heyes intermixed with Frontiere.
I will only Netflix these sets from S2V2 onwards because of the immense frustration I've endured over this debacle. What a waste--and for my favorite series of all time.
And yet OL music appears on "The Invaders" which evidently CBS greenlighted. And not just in the "Beachead" pilot, which is peppered with many recycled OL cues. A Frontiere penned cue which appears in the teaser for "The Zanti Misfits" (which I believe may be the "Point of Honor" cue from...
Great thread, Gary.
My top five stalled series:
1. Rawhide
2. The Rifleman
3. Have Gun Will Travel
4. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
5. The Big Valley
Joe, I enjoyed reading your post and agree with everything you wrote with minor adjustments to the close of one era and the beginning of the next. Personally, I break the TV eras according to these time frames:
Golden Age: up to 1963
Silver Age: 1964 - 1974
Bronze Age: 1975 - 1984
Copper Age...
Check the underside of your discs, Dave--they may have a milky film on them if Scanavo (sp?) cases were used to house your DVDs. Mine developed this and only after considerable cleaning with Windex (and case replacement) was I able to remedy the problem. As I recall S2 and S3 were the worst.
"Bonanza" falls into the unwatchable category for me as well and while I enjoy HC and BV, they're not among the very best of tv westerns, IMO. My favorites are "Rawhide", "Have Gun Will Travel", "The Rifleman", "Wagon Train" and "Wanted: Dead or Alive" because, unlike "Bonanza" they have more...
All I want to know is whether S3 V1 is about the same as S2 V1-redux as far as music replacement is concerned. (I can stomach the amount of Heyes in set 2-1 but as for 2-2 it probably should be buried under a ton of brimstone.)
The isolated score tracks to certain episodes sounds very intriguing--hopefully a couple of these will feature Jerry Goldsmith's work. So glad that Paramount is not doing this set. Pete Rugulo's contribution would probably be available as an isolated track, only reworked by Mark Heyes on the...
And for me it's pretty much become the last straw--stifling my zest for the hobby of collecting tv on dvd singlehandedly. Oh, I'll watch out for "Thriller" and a couple other titles here and there, but Paramount has unilaterally killed my enjoyment for collecting shows with how they handled...
The sound quality is indeed substandard on the "Outer Limits" set and as I recall "The Sixth Finger" was especially poor. Alas, all subsequent releases featured the same A/V quality.
A nicely remastered OL-63 (with some extras this time) on Blu-ray sure would be welcome!
I share your pessimism because I have the sinking feeling that the contract with Heyes called for his drivel that passes for music to be represented on the remaining volumes. I hope I am wrong.
I doubt that I'll ever purchase S2V2 and will probably just Netflix it when I feel I can stomach...
Quote:
Gary "I'll personally be waiting on some reviews of S3, V1 before I make any purchasing decisions" O.
Amen to that, Gary. If vol. 1 is greenlighted by the fans, there'll be some nice viewing this fall and Christmas season.
I hope "micheal_ks" critically likes the box art more...
Vintage sci-fi tv fans will recall that Terry Becker left "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" two-thirds of the way into S2 ("The Sky's of Fire" being his last episode that season) following a salary dispute. Efforts to replace him proved fruitless and Irwin Allen thankfully brought him back at...
Well, do I want to give CBS Paramount my money up front under the guise that they will 'probably' make an effort to get at least 'some' of the original score back in? Answer: I'll wait and see. 95+% original soundtrack or NO SALE for me.
What an interesting story that was, Nick. Basehart's reaction mirrors how I envisioned him to be, i.e. a very serious actor who adored his craft. It's ironic that we were graced with his fine voice and acting ability in VTTBOTS solely as a result of his marital/financial woes. Had he been...
Gary, as usual, I'm in complete concert with your assessment. We haven't heard a peep from the studio about a S4 "Rawhide" release in so long that I'd be VERY surprised if the series is resurrected. Fully agree that "Bonanza" and "Gunsmoke" have a definite edge over "Rawhide" for seeing future...
