I agree with Scott. Layout #2 is much better, both acoustically and aesthetically. But your seats are indeed still a little tight to the sidewalls, as you noted. If you'll be viewing with your SO a lot - and you haven't yet purchased your seats - you might want to consider the two inner chairs...
I may not have expressed myself very well. There will be - has to be - underpad. What I was referring to were the options for the subfloor underneath the pad. Almost everyone says *not* to lay the pad directly on the concrete.
My brother-in-law is renovating his basement and he wants to add a home theater. He has removed the current floor, which was very cheap laminate (and poorly installed). He has come to me for advice about what he can replace it with and so I come here. I assume carpet is his best option...
