Horror TV Shows of the 1970s

I wish they would have included a simple text listing of all the 15 picks. I'm not gonna sit through a twenty minute video to find out.

    A few words about...™ - A Haunting in Venice -- in Blu-ray

Suchet and Finney are the epitome' and template for the character of Hercule Poirot. Branagh's characterization veers slightly into detective-hero territory too much for my taste and is quite altered from Christie's sleuth. I hope Branagh's trilogy is the finish of his nonsense.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Last of Us -- in 4k UHD

FTR, I refer to them as "Fungie-Zombies." And I won't be watching the second season of Last Of Us. After enduring a gazillion seasons of The Walking Dead, TLOU struck me as TWD 2.0 (not to mention the gazillion silly spin-offs that AMC is foisting upon us, too). A much better zombie series is...

International Disney Exiting Physical Media in Australia

Based on the crappy movies Disney is currently making, they might be doing Australians a favor.

Are people still blind buying physical media ?

I think I've spent enough in my life on physical media, in one way or another. First videotapes, very briefly laserdiscs, a TON of dvds, a brief dip into blurays... I only buy a film now on physical media if it's one that I know I'll rewatch multiple times (most recent one was the Criterion...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Ronin -- in 4k UHD

Ronin is a great spy thriller, unfortunately it doesn't seem to get the affection (imo) that it should. Great car chase sequence in it, too. De Niro seems to have ported over his performance from Heat for his character here, and I think it fits this story much better.

    Blood Meridian

Hillcoat is a good choice for director, I loved his other Western, The Proposition. But I'm still sad that this project didn't get off the ground when Todd Field was attached as its director...that would have been amazing.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - The Longest Yard -- in 4k UHD

The Longest Yard is just a jock version of Cool Hand Luke. Not as signifcant culturally but a helluva lot funnier. It's also the '70s film that solidified Reynold's ascent as a box-office superstar, for better or worse.

Great Movies Almost Ruined By A Single Performance

Nope, I don't think the re-edit "tremendously improves" anything about Godfather III. Yes, it slightly assists the plot in being a bit more coherent, and the Corleone celebration echoes nicely with the previous films openings family fetes, but that's about it. No amount of re-editing is going...

Great Movies Almost Ruined By A Single Performance

What??? 75% of the comedy in The Great Race comes from Lemmon's performance! If you're going to single his performance out as "insufferable" then you must not like the film in the first place (topic is "Great Movies Almost Ruined by a Performance").

Blu-ray Review Secret of the Incas (Kino) – Blu-ray Review

So nice to see this finally get a legit release. For some reason this never got shown on TCM (at least when I was subscribed); the only way I ever got to see it was a so-so copy that someone had up on youtube.

    Things that baffle you?

Most likely because a lot of municipalities or businesses are either too poor or too cheap to upgrade their surveillance systems. I'm sure in 1995 or so when that camera was first installed it was state of the art (hey, lookee! We should be on the lookout for a guy with a red baseball hat!).

Netflix To Crackdown On Password Sharing

I belonged to the Blockbuster Mail Rental service up until the time they discontinued it. Around the time it was due to cease ops, I received an email from them that they were selling off their inventory and to do a search by title for copies available for puchase. I still had about 75 titles...

UHD Review International A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Picnic at Hanging Rock -- in 4k UHD

I wonder if after the book's rights were optioned if the existence of the original conclusion had been mentioned at all... I do remember reading some reviews for the film before the complete novel was published that mentioned the existence of the original ending so at least some people were...

UHD Review International A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Picnic at Hanging Rock -- in 4k UHD

Weir made the correct decision to exclude the portion of the novel where it's explained the girls disappearance is due to aliens or spirits or whatever they were that absorbed and transported them to some other dimension or world. It was whacko phooeyness. Much more effective to leave their...

50 Best Movies of the 21st Century according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hmm, scanning through that list was an interesting diversion for a few minutes of my day. It struck me as a very multiple agenda-driven list, which I'm not negatively criticizing because ultimately doesn't everyone's choice of favorites result from some kind of personal agenda? It just so...

Official 2023 Oscar Nominations And Discussions Thread

Ever since I purchased my first VCR in the early '90s, and now that I've had a DVR for about fifteen years, it's never taken me more than about an hour or at the very most an hour and a half to watch any Oscar telecast. And even that length of viewing still feels like a long slog.

    Your favorite movies of 2022

I still have some (highly-regarded...but we'll see about that) films to see from 2022, but below are my picks sor far for the best. Just to qualify, I'm only including films that I'm certain would be in the running for a Top Ten spot, not ones that would likely just make an honorable mention...

Connery in On Her Majesty's Secret Service?

I think it was back in the late 80s or early 90s there were some TV commercials that inserted Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe (and a few others, too, but I can't remember them) into newly filmed segments. Of course these were only lifted out of their original sources so it was really just a...

Connery in On Her Majesty's Secret Service?

This is a very interesting discussion. All posters have made many interesting points that I agree with...I'll list them below: 1. "...the film remains unique to George's one time performance and probably close to the best score by John Barry in the series" Absolutely. Although the...

I'd like to know what anyone else felt about the montage of film clips that were shown during the salute to Warner Brothers 100th anniversary... An amazing output of great films, to be sure, but I found it a bit disingenuous that some of the films included were not really WB films at all. That...

True. And after all, the holy high council of the AMPAS turned down an offer by the President of Ukraine to provide a comment during the ceremony. I suppose it would have interfered with the intention the show was striving for of "things getting back to normal." If normal means keeping your...

Official 2023 Oscar Nominations And Discussions Thread

I watched most of the ceremony on fast-forward (it's the only way anymore that I can stomach glad-handing awards shows). The one takeaway I had that was disappointing and slightly distasteful was it seemed the audience was OK with giving standing ovations to each actor and actress that won an...

Which Single Movie Of Your Collection Gets The Most Long Term Replay ?

Disc-wise, there'd be way too many to list... However, since I have a DVR, I keep a few movies stored on it that I re-run endlessly just to let them play while I'm near the TV. Currently, these are the films I keep accessing: The Great Race Glengarry Glen Ross Dr. Strangelove Chinatown

Thanks for your response. I think you're correct that the comment by the anonymous director-voter you posted would likely know if his ballot would still be valid if they abstained from completing all ten picks in the BP category, so that answered my question. I have a question about the voting procedure for Best Picture nominees, there seem to be some knowledgeable people here who might know the answer: When voters fill out their picks for the Best Picture, is there a rule that they must rank ALL the pictures on the ballot? That is, say that I'm a...

    Pre-Order Marlowe (2022) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

I've seen both Purple Noon and Talented Mr. Ripley and much prefer Ripley, in fact I'd put it in my top ten of films for that year. Noon is a good naturalistic transposition of the Highsmith novel, but I think the larger budget and great cast made Ripley more visually memorable. Haven't seen...

If you liked Cold Pursuit, I hope you've checked out Order Of Disappearance, the Norwegian film that CP is a remake of. I liked both, but I give the edge to the original.
