    Should I buy 480p or 720p

Hello! I am thinking of buying a projector for my new basement home theater. I'd be using a 92" or 106" screen. Based on the reviews, I like the Infocus 4805, which is 480p. It seems to be priced nicely, perhaps because of the fading technology. The Infocus 5000 seems to be 720p and is about 300...

Question about Bose Accoustimass 15 speakers

Blain, you could buy a bass module off of ebay. I saw 4 available just now, although you might be better off taking John's suggestion and getting rid of the cubes instead.

    help - subwoofer

I have used a Pioneer-Bose combination. You could connect an additional powered sub. Sony is not really known for their subs. In this price range, most people on this forum might recommend Dayton Audio's 10" sub available at www.partsexpress.com . I like my Athena 12" sub that sells for about...

    newbie thread

Onkyo 503 is a great entry-level receiver.. good bang for buck. See cnet's review here: http://reviews.cnet.com/Onkyo_TX-SR5...-31431599.html Can be had for about $260 shipped. If you don't mind refurbs, its predecessor (502) can be had for about a $100 less from ecost or ubid. I like HK's...

    Pioneer VSX-1015TX... Opinions?

Jefflab, my experience with 1015 has been exactly the same as your quote below. Now that I am thru with the volume issue, I love it! >> Honestly, its not bad at all. In fact, I find the clarity and quality very good. I was hung up on the -db setting for the volume control, thinking it was...

    need help fast please!!

Well, I bought mine by just reading some magazine reviews and based on company's general reputation. Haven't regretted it. Since Athenas are from Canada, that should give you even more opps to audition it. Killed on duty???

    Athena AS-P series subs. Opinions?

I own a p6000 and am very pleased with it. Don't find it boomy either. Goes well with my Energy C series speakers. Is nice to look at. Pretty powerful... I never even dare to crank up the gain over 6 (out of 10).

    need help fast please!!

I have p4000's big brother p6000. I am not really an audiophile but I love its bass. Its powerful enough for my 20*16 large family room with high ceiling and open layout. IMO Athena subs are good value for money. p4000 is available at BBY if you wanna try it before buying. Good luck!

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Hi. I watched a few movies over the weekend and have decided to keep the 1015. Once I got over the fact that the volume scale is not linear and I'll have to keep it in the 30's/20's to be comfortable, I enjoyed the SQ. The component upconvert is a cool feature too for the s-video input coming...

    Pioneer VSX-1015TX... Opinions?

Stephen, I agree with you. It's just a little difficult to digest that for the same manufacturer, the scale would vary that much. BTW your HT link is broken.

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

    >> Set all your spekaers to "small" and start from scratch. The new receiver should sound fabulous. I thought the auto-MCACC ignores what you've set. Anyway, I will still give it a shot. Thanks! >> BTW what did you do with the old receiver? Unloading it for cheap? I might keep it around...

    Pioneer VSX-1015TX... Opinions?

JeffLab, I am in the same boat as you. I almost don't hear anything from the speakers below -60db volume either. See my thread titled "1015 not loud enough". All the bells and whistles are holding me back from returning this as well. It's great bang for the buck but does seem to fall short on...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

John S, my only concern with 5890 is that then both my receiver and speakers would be on the brighter side (Yamaha and Energy). I compared 1014 and 5860 side-by-side at a Bb last year and found the latter to be a lot brighter (not harsher, but brighter still).

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

James Phung - I ran the MCACC with mic placed correctly last night. I actually placed it on a tripod sitting on top of the couch to get the precise spot! The distances that came out were correct. Also, the system set spkr levels pretty low - around 0db, sub at -10db. After auto-setup was done, I...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

    >> I'm not sure why this reciever is so weak, but it is. I am dissapointed. Can't really justify spending 500 that I spent on this. I hate to take it back but I think that's what I'll do. Anyone suggest any better ones. I have Energy speakers and a fairly large room as noted in a previous...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Just wanted to update that I changed certain settings and now there's more punch. Here's what I did - 1. MCACC had set all speaker levels to around 0db. cranked them up 2. The distances were all incorrect. I guess I should have placed the mic at the listening position. Manually corrected...

    Pioneer 1015 Remote Settings

Anybody know the preset code on the Pioneer 1015 remote for Directv receivers (HR-10)? It doesn't seem to list Directv as a brand in TV/SAT. I hope I posted this in the right forum.

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Thanks for your response John S. I see your point about volume not being a fair test. To me, its like when you test cars, you want to see how hard you hit the gas versus how fast it goes. I think I am going to return the 1015 in favor of the Onkyo 503. Good thing I bought it from BB, not...

    Harmony 688 Question

I am thinking of buying this remote. Dumb question - the logitech website says that it (and other models) can control stereo receivers. Can they also control surround receiver functions, e.g. switching to DTS:ES, etc.? Do these have to be taught or is there a list of surround receivers from...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Lee, I think the speakers are pretty efficient. Speaker sensitivity is 90 or more. Did you compare your 101X with any other receiver in the same room? My complaint about lack of loudness is relative to 2 other cheaper receivers I tried. If this were the only receiver I had used, I guess I would...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Hey John. I have tried both my sat-receiver and dvd player, both connected thru optical cable. speakers r pretty efficient too, energy c7 fronts, c-c1, and c-r1 rears. The room is 20*16 with a high (18') ceiling. What's puzzling is the only variable that has changed is the receiver. The new one...

    Pioneer 1015 not loud enough

Hi. I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the Pioneer 1015 replacing my 4 yr old Pio 509. However, it seems that my old receiver was much louder (although less clear sound) than the 1015. I used to be comfortable at around -40db on that one but here I have to raise the volume up to around -20 to...

    Remanufactured Harmon Kardon

John S - Is 5890 really available for around $500? Seems to be 799+ at the authorized dealers like JR,B&H, etc. Also, I've always heard that Yamaha's YPAO system is pretty inaccurate. Wonder if your experience was any different.

    HDMI Upconversion

I would like to upgrade my 4+ yr old Pioneer vsx-d509 receiver at some point. I could upgrade now, possibly to Pio 101X, or wait for a year or so if there are any must-have features about to be included to the ~$500 category receivers. One that I can think of is HDMI upconversion. Does anyone...

DirecTV H10 High Def Receiver Upgrade

Hello! I am interested in buying the H10 and had a concern or two. I noticed that the price has dropped (Bb/Compusa) in the past couple months from 299 to 199. Anyone know the reason for this drop? Also, I read on this forum that directv is changing the way local channels are received? I hope...
