    Direct or Bi/Dipole for surrounds?

Yeah, I would mount them on stands behind the couch. Is it a good idea to put ADPs on stands? I always heard that they are better placed on walls because of the way they radiate. So is it better to have 4 ADPs in a 7.1, or 4 direct speakers? Or does it depend on the room?

    Direct or Bi/Dipole for surrounds?

Hey guys, I'm in the process of upgrading my speakers, and am having trouble deciding on the kind of surrounds. I will be building a dedicated theater wired for 7.1, but this won't be finished for about a year. In the mean time, I want to purchase a 5.1 set to put in my family / great room. It's...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

It looks like the "M" line is up to version 2 now, and I've read that they no longer use the AirCirc tweeters, but now use Tymphany tweeters made specifically for SVS. Does anyone know if this is an improvement (or even a downgrade) over the AirCirc? Has anybody listed to both versions? I'm...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

Nearly a full year later, I'm still debating between SVS and Paradigm Studio v5. The time to purchase is getting close, as there's been a new development; I'm buying a new house and will be finishing the basement, including a dedicated home theater. I haven't kept up with the latest news...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

I agree, those B&W 800s look beautiful. Of course, I've never heard them, not that I'd be able to afford them any time soon anyway. The MTS-01 towers are stated as being '4-6 ohm', so I'm also a bit concerned with them as well. I'm not sure what the difference is between '4 ohm' and '4-6...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

I've noticed that a lot of equally- or less-expensive speakers than the MTS-01 have more drivers. For instance, the Axiom M80 v3 has 2 woofers, 2 mids, and 2 tweeters. Are the Axiom drivers just lower-quality, and that's why you can get more drivers per speaker for less? How does doubling up...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

Due to the ever-present wife I rarely crank the volume, but should I worry about the middleweight receiver I've selected being able to power a set of 4-ohm speakers? Do I need an amp? If so, I don't think the AVR-891 is the way to go, as it only has pre-outs for the sub(s). I'm now looking...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

I think it's pretty clear that they are subwoofer masters. I don't know anybody who actually owns a whole set of their speakers, though, and I'd like to get feedback on them. I know speakers are very subjective, but since I can't listen to them and given SVS's track record, I'd be willing to go...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

Robert & David, Thanks for the insight. Interesting that both of you are leaning me toward SVS. There is one thing I didn't think about. The Paradigm surrounds seem much better. I believe they're dipolar. The SVS surrounds look like simple direct bookshelves. Any thoughts on this? I'm...

Paradigm or SVS for full 5.1

Hey guys, I'm planning a major HT upgrade that includes a new receiver and 5.1 speakers to replace an Onkyo HT-R520 HTiB, and I need your help to decide on speakers. My setup (the parts that aren't changing) consist of a Pioneer PDP-5020HD, an HD cable box, a PS3, and Wii. My usage is...

    Denon AVR-891

Hmm. Actually, it looks like only the Denon AVR-3311CI and up have MultEQ XT. The rest only have MultEQ. At least that's how it looks to me. Denon's specs are very inconsistent. In some places, it says MultEQ, and others specify MultEQ XT.

    Denon AVR-891

Ah, yes, I forgot SVS is internet-only. I should call and mention Dave. If this keeps up, they'll make DaveF a VP. I went into Morris Home Furnishings last night and listened to a 7.1 Paradigm Studio setup with Studio 40 v4s as the mains, and I listened to Studio 60s by themselves with...

    Denon AVR-891

I just finished reading DaveF's epic saga. Didn't realize that SVS was spawned from members of this very community, let alone based in Ohio (I live in Dayton, just a few hours from Y-town). I'll have to keep my eyes open for dealers around here. Yeah, I realize there's no need to match up...

    Denon AVR-891

Man, so many choices! The Denon AVR-791 would be a good choice if it didn't skimp so much on inputs because it has HDMI 1.4a and MultEQ. But it would be a tough choice with only one Component in. It seems like what one receiver provideth, the other option taketh away. As far as speakers...

    Denon AVR-891

How important is the difference between MultEQ and 2EQ? Because upon further looking, the Onkyo 608 would be a perfect fit for me. I'm too am concerned about TheNerds. Looking through the reviews of them on places like resellerratings.com a lot of people have bad things to say about them...

    Denon AVR-891

It does concern me that the Onkyo TX-SR707 isn't HDMI 1.4a. I've demoed 3DTV at Best Buy and was fairly impressed. Impressed enough to jump on the 3D bandwagon in the next few years, I'm not sure, but it's nice to have the option. Thoughts?

    Denon AVR-891

I do love my Onkyo and it would be nice to have that familiarity, but I admit that I was 'ga-ga' over the $599 price of the AVR-891. You may have just opened my eyes, though, because the Onkyo 707 is $479.99 on amazon right now. I don't know much about it as I've spent most of my time...

    Denon AVR-891

Hey guys, It's time for me to start planning a new HT setup, and the first thing I'm looking to do is replace my receiver. I have a 6 year old Onkyo HTiB, which came with a fantastic receiver (at the time), but it's non-HDMI and it can't convert between inputs, so it's definitely time to...
