Problem with Madman's Buck Rogers set

Hey, everyone, I just got that Buck Rogers in the 25th Century set from Australia, and I'm having a problem getting the theatrical version of the pilot film to play. I go to the episode list menu and I can select it, but nothing happens after. The other episodes on that disc are playing fine...

    Defective disc repair?

In case anyone is curious, I've just received a reply from Universal about this matter: Dear Sir, Your e-mail has been forwarded to this department for reply. Please return the Disc 6, along with a copy of this correspondence and the following information: 1. Description of the problem...

    Defective disc repair?

Jonny, one thing I'm considering if I can't get any satisfaction from Uni is trying to find a used (or otherwise cheap) Battlestar set on ebay, then mixing and matching discs to build a fully functional set. It's not the best solution, but it may be cheaper than buying a whole new set.

    Defective disc repair?

Thanks again, Steve - I looked at that FAQ page and somehow failed to notice the "Contact Us" link. Jonny, I also have some really old CDs that play with no problems. The only explanation I can think of is that it's the multiple layers in DVDs, especially double-sided DVDs like Universal...

    Defective disc repair?

Thanks, Mark and Steve - I hadn't thought about dealing directly with Universal. Stupid newbie question: where should I contact them? So far all I've been able to find is the Universal online store...

    Defective disc repair?

Well, now, there's a scary thought, that a set could be fine on one viewing and screwed up a year later. I've got a lot of money tied up in TV sets... I've gotten to where I pretty much distrust any Universal product because I've had so many problems with them -- I returned the first season...

    Defective disc repair?

Hey everybody - I'm not sure this is the proper forum for this question, but as it involves one of my TV sets, I thought I'd give it a try. Here's the set-up: I bought the original Battlestar Galactica in the big Cylon head package several years ago, but due to various distractions (like...

Thanks, George and John, for the input. Looks like I'll be questing for the OOP version!

Good Neighbors/The Good Life Series 4?

Hi everyone -- I recently picked up Good Neighbors: The Complete Series 1-3 and have had a wonderful time rediscovering this great show. I know Series 4 was available through a different publisher at some point, but I understand that set has now been discontinued. (I also hear it wasn't terribly...

Ever manage to replace one disc out of a set?

Derek, it sounds like your local laserdisc dealer was a cool guy. That's partly why I hate dealing with national chains, because you don't get that kind of treatment very often. Pete, in this case I believe the problem is a manufacturing defect as opposed to damage - I can sort of make out an...

Ever manage to replace one disc out of a set?

So here's my sob story: my girlfriend got me Magnum PI: The Complete First Season for my birthday last September. I've been watching it a little at a time and have just made it onto the final disc in the set when I encounter a manufacturing defect. It's the usual pain that comes from...

    Forgotten shows

Although I agree the typical American viewer probably wouldn't have much interest in a historical series, nobody said it had to be turgid, serious, epic or depressing, but that raises an interesting point. Why is it that a story in a historical setting is so often either deadly serious or a...

    Forgotten shows

AnnaMaria, I think the big obstacle to doing far-back-in-history shows is mainly budgetary. The farther back in time you go, the more expensive it is to film, at least for American productions. The British have lots of ruins and landscapes that haven't changed much in centuries, so they can...

    Forgotten shows

Wow, a lot of shows mentioned that I haven't thought about in years - put me down for Voyagers and The Fantastic Journey, the mid-70s Bermuda Triangle thing. How about the TV version of Logan's Run with Gregory Harrison as Logan? Also does anyone remember Tucker's Witch with Catherine...

War of the Worlds tv series...I wonder?.

Man, I haven't thought about that show in years! As I recall it was one of Fox's early offerings, or was it syndicated? I wouldn't mind seeing it again...

    Greatest American Hero!!!

I agree that music is often integral to the plot and it's very distracting and/or disappointing when it's changed, but I still prefer having the series with alterations than not having it all. Something else I've thought of in regards to this subject: I could be wrong about this, but didn't...

The Sting SE on 09/06/05 See Post #133

You might also consider that an actor who is steadily working, as Redford was in his prime back in the '70s or anyone on a regular weekly TV series, doesn't have a lot of time to watch any movies, let alone their own work. And then once their show ends or they otherwise free up sometime, maybe...

    Greatest American Hero!!!

It really saddens me to hear that music changes seem to be happening with more and more sets, but I'm going to have throw my vote in with Craig -- it is better to have one of these small, almost-forgotten, niche-market shows available in some form, even if it's less than ideal, than to not have...

    DVD Review HTF Review: Ray

I have done the direct comparison in the store, which is what produced my confusion. The Ltd Ed shows a feature but no commentary; the regular ed shows a commentary but no feature. And yet the copy describing both this mystery feature and the commentary is very similar. Is there anyone out...

    DVD Review HTF Review: Ray

Thanks for replying, Jonathan. The thing that is confusing me is that the Ltd Ed lists a feature in which the director talks about the long process of bringing Ray's story to film but does not list a commentary. The standard edition, meanwhile, shows a commentary but not that feature. I'm...

    DVD Review HTF Review: Ray

Could someone please clarify for me the difference between the ordinary garden variety edition of Ray that I'm seeing around and the Limited Edition I've seen at Costco? Is it just the fancy packaging? Or are there content differences as well?

    No Quinn Martin shows

I'm 35 and I fondly remember a lot of the shows mentioned in this thread. I was very small when they were on, but I remember watching them with my parents. I always liked the melodramatic voiceovers that introduced the QM shows: "Tonight's episode..." I'd love to see more classic tv on dvd...

    Northern Exposure Seasons 3>?

Personally, I hate the little parkas. They look cute in the store, but they're of no practical value. I've got the ones from season one and two in a ziplock bag in my basement so I can just have the keepcases on my shelf with all the other DVDs. Same with the "big Cylon head" Battlestar...

Scratched and scuffed discs becoming common?

I haven't encountered much in the way of scuffing or scratching problems, but for the last six weeks I've been playing the game trying to get a playable set of the Buck Rogers TV show. I ordered the set from an online dealer. The first time I received it, one of the discs had some kind of...

    Magnum P.I. Season 2

Well, we've all seen how effective the education campaign on widescreen has been, haven't we? I've been arguing this one with my dad and my girlfriend's dad for years, with no progress on either front. Neither of them can get past the fact that widescreen images look smaller, in terms of screen...

What DVD cataloging software is best?

I use CATVIDS myself. I like the looks of DVD Profiler, but I'm one of those dinosaurs who's still surfing the web from a dial-up connection, so an online service isn't very convenient for me. CATVIDS has a few hinky little problems, but nothing so bad that I wouldn't recommend the app, and...

Buck Rogers in the 21st Century

I haven't seen the TV version in years, but as best as I can recall, the only real differences were a couple of scenes inserted to help set up the TV series. I especially remember a pair of scenes in which Buck is assigned his apartment and tries out the sleep-inducing bed, protesting all the...
