Another vote for pre/amp section....amps do sound different but more drastic sound changes are likely in the preamp sections....

There is a "Tone" feature in HKs which if it is "Tone-out", it bypasses these controls..."Tone-in" puts these controls on line. Glad you were able to sell your unit...I was interested but ended up getting a Marantz unit just because it is cheaper and I already have an HK AVR. Good luck with...

That is some glowing review of the audio capabilities of the Yamaha! Alex.D, what is your impression of the CD playback and how does it compare to the Onkyo?? Thx. Anyone know the chassis config. of the Yamaha 950? Is it full chassis or slim line? Thx.

IIRC they are different. K model has a flip down door and the display lights are different...it feels a bit more upscale with those features than the 3960. I liked the K model better but in the end returned it.... I may be confusing a diffeent K model but it was also bought at costco.

Im in the same boat although my price point is lower as in $500. Onkyo 802 has all the features I think I need but havent been able to get accurate info on regular CD playback sound quality or what DACs it has. Anyone know? I do know that it's video is claimed to be mediocre...I had heard/read...

Any one know if the Yamaha 950 is going to have the slimline chassis or a full sized chassis like the Onkyo? Also, I guess I dont fully understand Alex's objection is as to hook up on the Onkyo. Why cant he just set one soruce on the receiver to the 2 ch, another source to 5 ch music, another...
