    Battery Backup for Sump Pump

Most cheap UPSs do not output a pure sine wave when on battery power and will not work properly with a water pump. APC's SmartUPS series is a higher quality UPS that DOES put out a pure sine wave. I recommend buying only APC, and contacting APC to find out if the model UPS you want will drive...

    Obscure rock song trivia challenge!

Chris, not sure, but the more I think about it the more I think it's possible. McCauley did all of the orchestral stuff for Andromeda, but it does say "Lyrics by" ... and I can't think of any other actual songs in that episode that had lyrics. Barring a second opinion, I think that's got to...

    Ugliest animal on the planet?

That's just a stone fish. They sell them in open holding tanks (ie, even children could just reach in and grab them) at a local pet store for $99. The venom from it's bite will rapidly kill a grown man.

    Obscure rock song trivia challenge!

I know, I can't help but wonder if it's not some KISS-like cover band, or just a one-off for the show, but it sounds decent enough to be a real song. Surely someone has heard this before or has access to better resources to find it. This is the first time Google has ever failed me in such a quest.

    Obscure rock song trivia challenge!

Welcome to my obscure rock song trivia challenge. Could also be titled "I really like this song and need someone to tell me what it is." Comes from: The TV series Andromeda, season 3 eposide 8, "For whom the bell tolls." Sounds like: Some obscure 80s rock band Lyrics I can make out...

    Good Free Proxy

Mike, security through obfuscation is very unreliable. Somebody will find your proxy, if they haven't already. I suggest setting up a .htaccess file for basic password protection. There are dozens of online tutorials on this, or contact your web host for help.

Suggest your favorite GSM cell phone / bluetooth headset

Alex, is the bluetooth reliable? The 6230 looks real nice, but I've read some reports of unreliable bluetooth functionality. Can you access the MMC card over bluetooth? Does it show up as a regular drive letter? I use USB keys and it'd be cool to ditch them and just access the drive built into...

Suggest your favorite GSM cell phone / bluetooth headset

I've always loved tiny cell phones. Unfortunately most of them, including my latest favorite the Siemens SL56, have terrible reception. Often I can't place a call at all, while friends with larger phones on the same network have no problems. So I figure I'll buy a better phone. One with...

    Why don't Christmas lights last?

I think I store them fine. They get carefully wrapped on those plastic Christmas light holder things, put in a rubbermaid box and stored in the attic. Sure they're not expensive but my multi-function strands were ~$12 each and throwing away half a dozen strands every other year is wasteful and...

    Best hand lotion?

Thanks all. I bought some of the Neutrogena Norwegian stuff and it's much better. I'm going to try some of your other suggestions too just for fun. At least hand lotion is a cheap "hobby", unlike Home Theater...

Help with debt collectors or contract law

I've done both. The authorities don't care. The group of 6 others I'm working closely with, we've all filed reports with various agencies and have contacted his local police department and have done the safeharbor thing. It doesn't matter. He's going to get away with it because a few thousand...

    Why don't Christmas lights last?

It seems Christmas lights only last one or two seasons. Well I'm tired of it. Does anyone make decent Christmas lights these days? Something that will really last? I like the fancy lights with the little microcontrollers that come in multiple colors and fade, chase, merge from one color to...

Help with debt collectors or contract law

I don't think you people see my point. Morally and ethically they should be initiating collections against the recepient of the money. They know he is a thief. They've been informed of it by dozens of people now. It's just as easy to give his name and address to the collection agency and send...

    Best hand lotion?

Wow, tons of recommendations! Thank you! I'll just have to start trying these one at a time, then buy a case of whatever I like best. My hands and face dry up and the skin can crack open. It's not fun at all.

    Improving black levels?

Thank you for the replies. I don't know what Neutral Density filters are but I'll Google them. Thank you. I haven't painted the screen at all. Just plain blackout cloth so far. I might try a few colors on some of the leftover cloth and see if I like it.

Help with debt collectors or contract law

I've done all of the safeharbor stuff. But Bidpay should be going after the recepient of the money orders, not the sender. Especially in a situation like this, I have half a dozen people backing me up that this guy is a con artist. It would be just as easy to sick the collectors on him.

    Best hand lotion?

I have dry skin and am wondering what you would recommend for a good hand lotion. I've always used Lubriderm but it's kind of greasy. Is there a good lotion/moisturizer suitable for use on the hands & face that soaks in and leaves your skin comfortable without the grease?

    Improving black levels?

I have a Sanyo PLV-70 projecting onto a DIY blackout cloth screen. Is there an easy way to improve the black levels? The picture is great and black levels aren't bad, but they aren't great either. I've calibrated with Video Essentials.

Help with debt collectors or contract law

I bought something on eBay and paid with Bidpay. To make a long story short the seller is committing online fraud and ripping off dozens of people for thousands of dollars. I'm only out $135, others are out $500 or more. I told Bidpay weeks ago that this guy was committing online fraud and they...

Surround speaker ceiling mounts & placement

I need to mount my surround speakers (7.1 setup), and prefer to ceiling mount them. Since I have vaulted ceilings, I'll need to extend the speakers down on a pole, and each pole will have to be a different length. Any advice on where to find a mounting system? Or brands/etc? I don't know where...

Question about cabling with front projectors

Once you have figured out how to run the cables, run as few as possible. I have four, quad-shield RG6: Three for the component run (must all be exactly the same length), and one for composite. Then use your receiver or other device to switch the video. Most projectors aren't going to have a...

    Front projection screens??

Thank you for the replies. Wow, this is cheap. I've been quoted over $1,500 for a slightly larger version of that screen. I'll have to look in the phonebook for local dealers. Was that a new price, or a used/floor model/special deal? I will look into Carada as well. I'd already read the...

    Front projection screens??

Where is everyone getting their screens for so cheap?! I've been quoted prices anywhere from $1500 - $2500 for a fixed, 133" 16:9 screen. Yet I keep seeing posts claiming it should be a few hundred dollars. Cheapest I've found are these "Performance Theater" screens from myfilmscreen.com at just...

    Front projection screens??

Thanks for the info. My speakers are not behind the screen. I have plenty of room left & right, above & below for front speakers. Everyone seems to claim Stewart is "the best". I don't know a thing about screens, though. Why would I pay, say, $700 for a Stewart screen, when I can get a...

    Front projection screens??

Can anyone share advice on front projection screens? I bought the Sanyo PLV-70 and need a good screen for it. Something fixed, I don't mind making a frame for it or I can buy it with a frame, doesn't really matter. I'm mostly concerned with what screen material is most appropriate for me and...

    Projector ceiling mount?

I found one. Chief UPA-1002. Comes with everything I need and only $209. mountsandmore.com/prods/Chief-Manufacturing/UPA-1002/0PCF1216.htm And if I ever upgrade my projector, that mount should still work.

    Projector ceiling mount?

I need a ceiling mount for my new PLV-70. My ceiling is vaulted, so the mount will have to hang down somewhat, and pivot at the ceiling mounting plate. Any thoughts? I don't know the first place to begin looking.
