There's a boxset of Wertmuller films (including SEVEN BEAUTIES and SWEPT AWAY) coming out on Sep 20th from Koch Lorber.. unfortunately both of these titles look to be 4x3.. :frowning:
Yep, whenever another language other than English is spoken, there is burnt-in french subs!!! Very weird... maybe they mixed up the Quebec release or something. It's definately a flaw, but I don't think any of the foreign dialogue serves an important purpose in the film. I must say I was...
I am beginning to wonder if some people on this website are millionaires, they seem to be willing to buy a HD-DVD player right away along with as many titles as they possibly can ;) I am more than happy with DVD and I have no desire to start over on my collection of 350+ just to get a...
Here's some more: Jesus of Montreal (Koch Lorber) 1989 Grind (Warner Bros.) 2003 Dances With Wolves - Theatrical Version (MGM) 1990 Straight Talk (Walt Disney) 1992 Ponette (Fox Lorber) 1996 Here's some cheap Canadian R1 discs you might find out there, that are P&S Another Day in...
Yeah, I paid 8.97 GBP for the R2 disc at Amazon just a couple of months ago - not quite sure why it jumped in price. I am probably not gonna 'double dip' because they both have the same extras and the picture quality is close enough.
If they're going to sue MGM over something trivial and stupid like this, then somebody should sue TVA Films for advertising on the back cover that the "The Saddest Music in the World" DVD was widescreen when in fact, it wasn't.
My top 10 list; 01) Short Cuts: Criterion Collection 02) Wild at Heart 03) Fat Girl: Criterion Collection 04) Martin Scorsese Collection 05) Oldboy SE (R3) 06) Zatoichi/Sonatine 07) The Saddest Music in the World 08) Santa Sangre (R2) 09) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 10)...
MGM can be really good when they want to be. They've done a great job on lots of foreign/cult titles that most studios wouldn't even bother with. "Wild at Heart" is an excellent DVD... beautiful transfer and lots of great bonus features. I also can't see most other studios releasing movies like...
I'd be wary of TVA.. hopefully someone posts a review, because even if it lists widescreen on the back, it could be a P&S transfer ala "Saddest Music in the World". It DOES say "supplements produced by the criterion collection" along the top, so maybe that is a good sign...
Apparently TVA released a corrected version of the TVA release on the 23rd of November. I don't know anything about it, although there was some postings on amazon.ca that said it would be non-anamorphic.
Oh well, I am not going to worry too much as I found the film to be kind of boring (I liked Brian de Palma's remake/homage "Blow Out" a lot better), so I doubt a couple extra shots of breasts would make it any more interesting. ;)
Gary,
Thanks for the info on the BlowUp dvd. It looks like I have the censored version. The funny thing is, I bought the dvd because it looked like a movie I'd like, but also since I heard it was pretty shocking for 1966, with all kinds of frontal nudity and all. After watching the movie, I...
Whoa, I just found out that the R1 dvd is now out of print and commanding big bucks on ebay... the highest one is currently at $87, and amazon marketplace is around the same. I only bought this one a couple of months ago at Future Shop, kind of glad I did now. Not the greatest dvd, but I like...
Catherine Breillat's controversial Anatomy of Hell is coming out in R1 on January 11th via Tartan Video. This one has caused quite a ruckus at film festivals and in other countries, but in North America it's had a fairly quiet theatrical release so far.
Here's the issue... The first printing of the Canadian dvd from TVA Films claimed "widescreen" on the back but it turned out to be a horrible P&S transfer. TVA Films have apparently corrected this and are releasing a WS version on November 23rd. The American edition from MGM, which comes...
Thanks for letting us know, DeeF. It's very disappointing indeed. I wonder if anybody still has the email for that Koch Lorber guy whom was discussing the La Dolce Vita dvd on DVDTalk ( i think it was) with the members. I thought this company was going to focus on making high quality product, I...
I finally found a review... http://www.classicsondvd.com/jesusofmontreal.htm they say it's open matte, but it still sounds pretty shitty, I think their 3 stars was a bit generous
bad news on "Jesus of Montreal"... it's a P&S transfer, and apparently a really bad one at that. I think they used the Canadian transfer instead of doing their own. Big no-no. As for Koch's "The Decline of the American Empire" dvd, it has a very nice anamorphic transfer. Don't...
Oh yeah... regarding "Saddest Music in the World" dvd, I just noticed that amazon.ca has another version from TVA listed for November 23rd. This must be the proper widescreen version. However it's a bit late now, as the MGM comes out on the 16th, and that's the one I'll be getting as I know it...
Well, I've seen the back cover for this DVD on dvdlister.com and it says the aspect ratio is "4x3". There's also the Max Films logo on the back, which means they used their transfer. I have no idea why they couldn't do their own. I could understand them using Seville's transfer for "Decline of...
I've never seen a DVD release botched in so many countries.... the Canadian one is full screen with no subtitles, the UK edition advertises 16x9 widescreen but turns out to be P&S... Australian version is also P&S. Now, of course the American DVD which was previously advertised as 16x9 now turns...
That's just terrible, looks like I'll be taking this off my upcoming Amazon order! As for the transfer, my guess is that it comes from the Canadian dvd from Max Films (which didn't have any subtitles). The reason why I think this, I have their "Decline of the American Empire"...
