The value specified on the back of the receivers is rarely the maximum power consumption of the device. Example HK430. avland.co.uk/harmankardon/avr430/rear.jpg Here you can see the specified power consumption at 550W. Yet in the manual...
The values posted by amatala are from a finnish Hifi magazine that has been around for quite a while, and are quite reliable. The reasons why the measurments differ are probably caused by the fact that the US and European models differ a bit (different power supplies, etc.) and that the...
It's a quite common misconception that the values specified on the back of the receivers would be the maximum power draw. But, unless clearly specified as the maximum power draw (ie. says Max power consumption next to it), it usually isn't. Though I don't know how manufacturers calculate that...
I would definately consider Acoustic Visions Kilimanjaro. It looks like a good contender for 1500 bucks. Closed enclosure and very high excursion driver so it can still give out some serious SPL if necessary.

If you are willing to sacrifice PLIIx, Sony DB790 has got great reviews in european magazines, and might fit your budget, atleast if you live in germany. Though the specs don't look that good, the real world performance is excellent; no problems driving lower impedance speakers, solid build...
I would suggest the Sony DA1000ES for that price. Though Sony might not be the brand with the most street credibility here, it works and has got good reviews in europe.
I've always thought that Rotel was one of those good high-end brands, and have been dreaming about purchasing some in the future, but this thread has really made me think twice... Rotel isn't to blame for the short in Phills speakers, but they are to blame for not including any kind of...
I listen to music at around 60-65dB peak. In a quiet envireoment, such as my room, there is no need for higher volumes IMHO. Though naturally, sometimes I do crank it up ;) My Sony STR-DB2000 reaches this level at -43dB. At 0dB (never listen at this level though, +15dB is the highest volume...
