audio sync problem with digital cable?

What do you all make of this? I have the box for digital cable from WideOpenWest in the Detroit area. I get analog cable on it plus the digital OTA broadcaster feeds. Audio sync on the digital (HD) channels ranges from almost perfect (PBS) to off by 1-2 seconds (NBC). Analog cable stations...

Sony MiniDisc Recorder...or something like it

A few years ago I got a MD player to record my practice sessions on cello. Of course you know that the quality of the microphone is going to be a big factor in sound quality. Let me make just a couple observations: 1)My Sharp player has a feature that will automatically put track stops in at...

When do new models usually arrive?

I'm starting to see the Sony 47" wide HDTV monitor RPTV I bought in May now being advertised as "closeout." Maybe not too long for those.

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

My problem with pixelation occurs on my Sony 47" HDTV monitor, 47WT510 I think is the model. Standard rear projector. NBC is particularly bad, every time the olympic rings logo flashes across between competitors, and every time the camera switches angles, I get pixelation, basically any time...

HD Olympic Games Opening Ceremony/Ongoing Coverage: What's Going On???

I recently got a cable box from my cable company to take advantage of the HD local channels. I find that whenever I'm watching the olympics on the HD NBC feed, I find that anything moving quickly across the screen pixelates quite badly. What is the cause of this? I also find sound imbalances...

My Sony KP-46WT510. I've finally joined the big screen world!

I have this TV and got the matching stand. I was a bit disappointed that you can't fit more components into the space, but my solution was this: I took out the shelf and put my center channel speaker down there. It's a rather heavy-clunky black box of a speaker, and I'm afraid it would warp the...

    The 4400 ongoing thread

After episode 2, I find myself liking the show less. The writing is weak and the characters are cardboard (and the love scenes were pretty sappy) but I'll probably tune in next week just to see if they actually go somewhere. Gosh, it sure seems like things are developing SLOWLY.

    The 4400 ongoing thread

X-files meets X-men, excellent characterization. Did it irk anyone at the beginning that the ICBMs were launched when the object was traveling at 3,000 km/sec and 28 minutes out, yet they impacted after about 15 seconds following launch? It seemed to me they would barely be out of the...

    Superbit: Worth it? (merged thread)

Starship Troopers????? That has to be the worst book-to-movie transfer ever. Totally butchered a good yarn by Heinlein. Of course I never read the Lawnmower Man short story by King but I heard it really had virtually nothing to do with the story Stephen King actually published.

How does the KP-51WS510 (Sony 51" rear projection) handle 720p??

I own the 47" version and the manual clearly states that the picture is downconverted. It seems fairly common for TVs to downconvert 720p if it's not native, as in the case of the Sony. Can't comment on picture quality, all I've seen are my DVDs which look great and not-so-hot standard analog...

    Digital Signal

What you are getting over analog cable is the standard definition picture. If you want a Hi-Def picture, you need to have something that's feeding you a Hi-Def picture. An antenna will, and cable will if the cable company is transmitting the HDTV signal on the cable. In the investigating I've...

Does the center speaker have to be *exactly* "centered" on top/bottom of the TV?

My setup used to be a 32" TV that came in a a nice wood cabinet... there was enough space on top to have my receiver and DVD stacked on the left side and my center speaker on the right side, on top of the TV. My mains were on either side, so the center was closer to one side than the other. At...

What to look for in DVD player in terms of audio

Well, most DVD audio is output digitally (unless it's DVD-Audio), so I think whatever is downstream from the DVD player is going to make a much larger difference than the player itself. Having DTS decoding somewhere would probably be helpful.

    Sony KP-51WS510 - 720p Questions

I don't have an OTA Hi-Def tuner box, but from what I read it looks like you can set the output to 720p or 1080i. Not sure if the cable box you mention is the same. I have the 46" Sony and the manual (for all the TVs in this series) clearly states that 720p is downconverted to 480p (see page...

    Toshiba 51H84 vs. Sony KP-51WS510

I just got the Sony 46" model, and can confirm that the screen is very reflective. I knew this going in, and since I watch with all the lights off (except for a light in another room) I avoid reflections. I tried turning a light on that's on the wall behind the TV, but this wasn't a good...

Analog or Digital SPL Meter from the Shack?

I'm debating whether to get the Analog or Digital Sound-Level meter from RadioShack. I'm thinking that you might be able to read an analog needle better than just numbers. Any thoughts?

    MartinLogan Descent vs SVS

I'm purchasing a Martin Logan Descent subwoofer from a friend. I had previously thought almost exclusively about SVS, but my friend's offer was too good to pass up. What in the SVS line is comparable to the Martin Logan? What would be considered an upgrade? Thanks!

    Hi-def tuner or SVS?

Thanks for the input guys. Useful perspectives all around. Fortunately my decision was essentially made for me... a friend of mine is offering to sell me his MartinLogan Descent sub for a ridiculously low price comparable to what I was looking at on the SVS. Gotta love those college buddies!

    Superbit: Worth it? (merged thread)

I own one Suberbit DVD: Das Boot. I had already seen the extra making-of featurette on the rented version, and I despise having to flip that one over. Here comes superbit where I now have two discs and I can put them both in my changer. Flippers are the bane of my DVD existence. Come on...

Dodge Magnum commercial promotes fullscreen over widescreen

Hemi is a marketing gimmick as far as I'm concerned. Maybe technically the combustion chamber is slightly more powerful in a hemispherical configuration. Of course I'm not really into cars much. It's probably like picking between to comparable receivers the one that has THX vs one that...

Aerosmith SACD wont play in 5.1! Am I doing something wrong?

I only own two SACDs so far (and am glad they're hybrid 'cause I don't have my SACD player yet). They're both classical and they both clearly state on the package that they are both Stereo and Multichannel. Don't all SACDs show which they are? (Mine are classical music SACDs.)

displaying non-anamorphic dvds anamorphically on 16:9 tvs

I just got a 46" sony rptv yesterday. I told my dvd player I had a 16:9 tv, and for anamorphic dvds I put my tv on "full" mode (this is the mode that if it receives a 4:3 image, it will making everything look uniformly short and fat). I also just bought Titanic for cheap, which is...

    Sony KP46W510 - "pixel" malfunction?

I just hooked up my new 46" RPTV from Sony. Things look great, except at the very edge of the picture at the top, just right of center, I can see one each of a yellow, maroon, and cyan dot (or half circle). It is visible during a bright scene (if I'm in full mode... not visible in a letterbox)...

    Sony's new DVPNS975V

Well, so far I'm not terribly impressed with SonyAwards. They had none of these [current 685]players in stock. I'm still waiting to get one. I heard from them yesterday that normal allocation was between the first and fifteenth of the month, and that those that get allocated in the first half of...

    Stand for Sony KP46WT510?

The opening of the stand in the front, without the shelf, is about 26" wide by 10.5" tall. I got anxious and decided I couldn't wait until next weekend. I just checked my receiver/dvd stack and it's 11" tall. Oh well. With the shelf in the lowest position, if you put something on the shelf you...

    Hi-def tuner or SVS?

Thanks for all the responses. Definitely something to think about... I've been itching for a subwoofer for years, maybe now is the time. Or at least soon, might need to save up some more. As for Subs and SACD, I haven't received my Sony DVPNC685V yet but the manual is on Amazon.com and it...

    Hi-def tuner or SVS?

I thought I'd throw this out. I hope it will find an audience. I've never owned a subwoofer and never had Hidef tv. HDTV via satellite or cable is not being considered. I just bought a 46" Sony RPTV and am trying to figure out what to do with my left over tax refund. I'm optimistic that I may...
