Humphrey Bogart: Signature Collection Vol. 2 See Post #8 Lack of Reviews

I think Glenn is exactly right. And, for those who are disappointed, it certainly doesn't mean that "it" has somehow become more about the packaging than the films and bonus material. That's just sophistry.

Humphrey Bogart: Signature Collection Vol. 2 See Post #8 Lack of Reviews

I too am mystified by the random black slim cases and the missing slipcase for the two Maltese Falcon slim cases. It's just plain sloppy. Warner gets a great deal right and I'm happy for it. It got this packaging all wrong, though. For the life of me, I just can't understand what's so difficult...

    Warner to the HD Rescue?

My original post was a bit inaccurate. The still-hypothetical disc would contain both HD formats on one two-layered side and the standard dvd format on the flip side (which, presumably, could be dual-layered as well). The more I ponder the tri-format disc, though, I too am left struggling to...

    Warner to the HD Rescue?

This New Scientist piece reports on a patent application filed by three people (including two Warner Bros. employees) for a disc that will contain standard dvd in one layer, HD-DVD in a second layer and Blu-ray in yet a third. Finally, a disc to resolve the HD format war . . . or make it worse...

The FOX Logo, why can it sound so different on different discs?

Unless I'm missing a joke, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? was released a few weeks back in the Jayne Mansfield set. I haven't screened it yet but the discussion has piqued my interest as well.

A Few Words About A few words about... Kingdom of Heaven - The Director's Cut

My only complaint with this set is the packaging, specifically the plastic tray inserts. Both inserts have a small circle of plastic protruding from the tray, which contacts the disc at the slightest pressure. Both discs in the inserts are badly scratched as a result. feh. Substantively, though...

    Madagascar wont' load... any ideas?

I had the same problem with Polar Express. My player is a Denon 2910. It is only 9 months old so I doubt dirt is a factor. Polar Express played fine on two low-end players but wouldn't load on the Denon. I think the new copy protection is a likely culprit. If so, it's a terribly odd business...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: The Damned Don't Cry (RECOMMENDED).

Although it casts a wide net, Herb's Noir List includes Humoresque as well.

    Damn, Warner's!

For me, all Warner box sets are release-day buys, blind or not. It would be wonderful if the other studios took a lesson here. On the other hand, my wallet would be even slimmer than it already is. I don't mind giving my money to Warner -- I'm happy to do it. I always feel like I get more than I...

    Thoughts on Boxset consolidation!

I recently received the Ealing Comedy Collection in slim cases with a slip cover. I'm not wild about the slim cases for movies. The Ealing slip cover didn't even identify the movies on the spine, which would have made it a bit more acceptable. I do, however, keep all my tv dvds in individual...

    DVD a ripoff?

Nope. No way. The point is to dry up the market for the pirated copies by hooking the Chinese on the studio's superior product at a currently competitive price. Only after winning that battle -- and taking losses for many years -- could Warner turn a profit in China. If it does nothing now...

Today is Ayn Rand's Centennial Anniversary, but where are her films?

I agree with the first part, but also think Atlas is timeless -- readily transferable to any age during which some men think they are entitled to take that which other men earn. Neither TV nor the internet has changed the heart or the mind of the looter, which is where the whole of the...

What are YOUR top ten DVDs of 2004?

My picks in some semblance of order, ranking being an unweighted mix of my personal estimation of release quality and film enjoyment. The Top Ten: 01. Gone with the Wind (4DSE) 02. Meet Me in St. Louis (2DSE) 03. Goodbye Mr. Chips 04. Out of the Past (Warner Noir Collection) 05. The...

    FYI -- B&N Buy 2/Get 1 Deal

By way of an FYI, Barnes & Noble is giving a buy 2, get 1 free deal on all dvds this month (at least in the brick and mortar stores). Although habitually over-priced, this deal will earn B&N some of my dvd money this month.

DVD Review HTF Review: The Great Escape - Special Edition (Highly Recommended!)

Based on the unofficial word, I had been planning to pass on this SE. Thanks for clearing things up -- I'm glad I can now jettison the prior version with confidence. The extras look just phenomenal. yee-haa

Anyone else buying up a DVD collection in order to do away with cable?

That's my thinking precisely. With 450 tv dvds (including my own captures of the complete Seinfeld, Hogan's Heroes and Get Smart!) and 350 films on dvd amounting to nearly 100 full days of total programming, I'm free at last, free at last, thank god I'm free at last. I haven't watched a "show"...

    Noir titles from Universal

I purposely used the "your" construction due to the disclaimer included with the list. Regardless, your classification is more than good enough for me. If all (or even most) of those films have the same "feel" as do Pickup on South Street, Maltese Falcon and Angels with Dirty Faces, I can see I...

    Noir titles from Universal

Herb: Thanks for linking your noir titles list in this thread. I confess that, as a relative newbie to serious film, I've never paid much attention to noir as a genre discreet from garden variety dramas, but when going through your list I realized I owned about 20 or so titles that fell...

    DVD Discoloration

I recently picked up the 2-disc SE of Singing in the Rain. When I popped out the feature dvd to check it for blemishes I saw something peculiar. From the edge of the dvd into almost to center, there is a discoloration in the data layer. To picture its shape, imagine, if you will, making a print...

DVD Review HTF REVIEW: Back To Bataan (RECOMMENDED).

Thanks for the review, Herb. Although I'd have liked to see at least some extras, even if just a newsreel, I'm going to be picking up this release. I recall enjoying this film during AMC's Memorial Day marathons -- back when AMC was worth watching. [After lurking here for quite some time...
