Wow, thanks everyone. I'd ignored this completely due to a couple of prominent reviews-- but with several posters I've come to respect recommending it on this thread I gave it a shot and loved it!
Does it look better than the old OOP and hard-to-get Roan Group release?
After hunting it down for months I finally got a copy at ebay for a reasonable price last year. Don't tell me I could have waited for VCI to simply use the Roan transfer for one of their new releases.
If I remember...
For those that have mentioned "Svengali (1931)", it was recently included as a bonus feature on the VCI release of "Svengali (1955)". The 1931 transfer looks MUCH better than the old Alpha edition. The URL for the Amazon listing is HERE and a review at DVD Talk is HERE.
Since this thread has been heavily weighted to the negative opinions, I'll chime in and say that I'm a supporter of the program. Recognizing that it's got some bugs and annoyances to be worked out, I've been overall pleased.
I, for one, prefer to have some of these titles available rather than...
My thanks to Warner also. I couldn't be more enthusiastic about all of the new product announcements, and when reading through the posts this afternoon thought the same thing about the negative comments and complaints.
Count me as in agreement also- I don't want all the extra "goodies", and will buy all of these as soon as a "normal" release happens. I just hope that Warner doesn't gauge interest of classics on Blu-ray based on sales of the "Ultimate Collectors Editions".
