Need help with AV component placement in a new HT

Ken, You asked...."how much would a component cable run of say 40-50 feet cost? i have seen prices and these cables are expensive because of their function...im just trying to be as efficient as possible in terms of expense and cable lengths" Don't waste your money (IMO) on looking for...

    In-Wall Component Cabinet

I went with a Middle Atlantic Slim 5 unit. You can find out more about them at their website: www.middleatlantic.com or I purchased mine from this company: http://www.markertek.com/ They are fairly expensive IMO, but the look they provide is hands down unbeatable (again in my opinion). What...

    Where to Start ?

Mac, I am actually in a similar situation as you as my ceiling from front to back of my HT is something like 86" for the first 13 feet then it drops to about 76" for about six feet (due to air ducts) then it goes back up to about 83" in the rear of my HT (had to furr down around water and gas...

    Sand Insulation

Alan, I have heard of filling the front stage and/or riser with sand for sound deading, but not walls. Maybe you could consider it in those two applications if they apply to you. Good luck! -Jason

RG6 Quad Shield - Any differences in quality

Yes you are worrying too much....unless you will be running the cables next to power cables you will be fine with RG6. The quad I ran in my last home and they are harder to make connectors for (IMHO) and if I were you, I would buy it from wherever you can find it cheapest. I used F and F-to-RCA...

    Is my player dying?

I had two Sony DVD players that did the same thing, and actually my latest one (almost 2 years old) has done it once or twice. It also only would do it at certain (usually late in the movie) spots. I think MY problem was heat generated from both the DVD player and the receiver which is below it...

    game room - dart board

Yes...corkboard works great...I used it in my last house....but it is sometimes hard to find. Try your local arts & crafts store if you can't find it elsewhere (i.e. Michaels, Crafts Etc, Hobby Lobby, etc.). Good luck! -Jason

    Surround Location

Rick, You may also want to note how many rows of seating you have. Personally, I believe the best location for surronds is about 1-2 feet behind where you will be seated (front row?), and if direct radiating...slightly angled forward. -Jason

Need help chosing the right sound proof door...

I purchased my door from 84 Lumber. They carry a door called "Permacore" and you can have it custom made with an exterior prehung door frame and I got a 6 5/8" jam since I am doing a staggered stud wall...this way you get a proper threshold to match the door. Looks great and was only $210 plus...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Dave, Sorry, I have not purchased my new HT equipment yet, so I have not ordered any custom shelves. But, when I compared the Slim 5 at Markertek vs other places it was cheaper (by at least $55). I guess their shelves are the same price by what you are saying but like I said...I am not there...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Dave, For the best prices I have found on Middle Atlantic racks look at www.markertek.com ---that's where I got my rack from---better pricing than Smarthome, and very good to do business with. I ordered online, but forgot screws so I called and added them to my online order with no...

Carpet for Sound Absorption in Concrete Floored Basement

Dave, You may also want to seal your concrete floor before carpeting. Moisture can seep up from the concrete and still cause problems with mold in your carpet. As for bass shaking your concrete....I guess some of it would depend on the sub you have (and size does matter). I moved to PA...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Philip...yes please post a pic when you get a chance. I actually just got my Slim 5 rack today. I ordered the 37 space version, so I have a lot of space available for components. I was impressed with how heavy it is. I am taking pictures of my progress on my HT and will post pics when I get a...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Thank you all for the help. I actually purchased the Slim 5, rear access panel, and a couple of 2-space blank plates to get me started....I plan on getting most of my equipment next year at about this time. I did purchase a fan unit on Ebay which will mount in the center of the rack. Thanks...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Mike, Do you have or will I need the "Adjustable Rear Rack" to mount heavy components like an amp? If not, what purpose does it serve? The heaviest component I will have will be am amp that will be about 90-95lbs. Also, will I need to get the side panels if mounted in a wall? I do want the...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

Mike, Thank you very much for the pics. I was wondering how it worked. Can you give me some idea of what parts outside the standard Slim-5 rack you purchased. For example, what spacers, shelves, etc. and give me an idea of TOTAL price to have a finished look (I know it will depend somewhat on...

    Middle Atlantic In-wall Equipment Rack-Help

I am in the process of building my HT and want a in-wall equipment rack. I have been looking at the mid atlantic racks, but don't know what the differences between for example the DWR series and the ERK series...and their website is not very helpful (at least to me). I also need to know what...

What is the "tuning point" spec for subs mean?

I believe they are referring to a built in variable crossover which allows you to determine what frequency you want to have your sub roll-off at (usually a 12db rolloff). -Jason

    Room ventilation question

I am in a similar situation as you as I am working on my HT in my basement as we speak. I am actually having the ducts tapped into next week and am putting a 10x6 vent in each of the two major rooms I am building....HOWEVER, I am only installing ONE return air in the other room (not the HT) due...

Building my first house! What should I do for a home theater room + other questions

I agree with Greg....definitly run PVC pipes from the basement to the attic...I also would recommend two...since if you are in an area where radon is an issue, they may want to use one of those in that process....still leaving you with the other to get cable from downstairs to upstairs. I would...

    Sheetrock Acoustics

Sheetrock is going to reflect your highs, allow your mids to pass through it, and do almost nothing to stop the bass. All of these can be addressed with acoustical treatments once the room is finished. However, IF you are trying to do something about sound insulation (which you state you aren't)...

    Almost finished....

Stan, One more question, it appears that the tops of the framing (maining walls) went close, but did not touch the floor joints for the first floor. Is that correct? Did they nail any of your main walls to the first floor? Thanks again. I will start taking pictures of my HT to share as well...

    Feels like starting over...

I am also beginning my HT in my basement, and saw someone post a link to www.polewrap.com which seems to be a very cool product....and inexpensive (in case you have not begun to price columns). Check that site out for an alternative for covering your poles. -Jason

Stan...how are the rope lights controlled....are they direct to a normal switch, or are they to a switched outlet up there? Is there a control box in the recess? Riser building help

I will be doing a similar stage and riser in my basement, the difference is I will be building off of a concrete floor. I was just planning on nailing the stage to the concrete (via ramset nail gun) as I will be doing the framing. Since doing this will surely provide for a secure fastening...

Need another set of eyes: Confirming room modes

I just wanted to drop my $.02 in on this one as well.....I too have used that spreadsheet, and spent hours playing with different room and seating dimensions. long component run ??

Or go to Home Depot and buy yourself a 500' roll of RG6 Quadshield and do the whole thing for ~$60 (w/o connectors of course). There are many opinions on cabling, and from experience I am of the opinion it is the single biggest place many people waste their money. Now for connectors I have a...
