    Upgrade advice for a newbie

I think you're on the right track. Focus on speakers first then the electronics second. There is no reason a set of speakers can't last 10 years as long as they aren't abused. I helped set-up a friend's system that included a Yamaha receiver, Paradigm Monitor speakers, and a HSU sub. It came out...

    amplifer-free reciever?

Wow... I like the idea of a 70" TV that you can hang on the wall, but it costs $15000. If I wanted a picutre that large, I'd go with a projector, but they don't always work in every room.

    Speaker Selection Help!

Your budget is kind of tight for a good sounding in-wall system. Try the ID brands of SVS and AV123 to see if they have systems that will work. If you can live with bookshelf speakers on stands, it will open up your choices not to mention give you better overall performance.

    amplifer-free reciever?

Your video audio will come from your cable box, satellite box, and DVD player, so you'll want to feed sound from these sources to the pre-pro or receiver. I'm not aware of Plasma or LCD TVs that are as big as you're looking for. Most are in the 42-50 inch range. If they make them larger they...

    starting from scratch

There are a few good audio stores out there. I wouldn't recommend the big box stores like Best Buy or Circuit City, but some of the local store and smaller chains live and die by customer service. Before going do your research and find out prices and don't buy the first time in the store. Listen...

Don't know about the Denon, but the Squeezebox will let you listen to all your music on your computer wirelessly. It's a really nice product.

    starting from scratch

Focus first on the speakers you want and spend the majority of you money on that then choose the electronics. The speakers have the biggest impact on your overall sound. Also, modern receivers sound very good and some of the mid level receivers have better specs than some of the budget...

please advise good speakers for yami RXV1800

I don't think that receiver will have any problem driving most speakers especially if you're using a sub crossed over at 80 hz. If you plan on running 4ohm, floorstanders at insane levels then you could consider adding an outboard amp. Speaker selection is just to subjective to say which one...

    2ch need advice

Check out the Denon, Yamaha or Onkyo stereo receivers. For that budget, you'll have a couple of good choices. I owned a Denon 2-ch receiver that worked well with a pair of hard-to-drive floorstanders.

Dynaudio's updated old-skool loudspeaker concept: the 2-way with a TEN inch woofer

Some people consider this the best approach to sound. Big speakers = big coherent sound that can't be duplicated by other approaches. Of course a good three-way, floorstander or bookshelf/sub combo can sound excellent too. To me the most important aspect of a speaker is the way it sounds to me.

please advise good speakers for yami RXV1800

Go listen to as many different brands of speakers as you can then buy the ones you like and fit into your budget. There are a lot of really good choices to choose from. Speaker preference is highly subjective, so you might not like what someone else likes.

Looking for input on a new receiver

I don't think you'd go wrong with any of them. Buy the one you can get the best deal on with the features you like. Your speakers have much more impact on the sound than the receiver as long as the receiver is functioning properly and not being over driven. Most modern, mid-level and higher...

    2ch need advice

What speakers are you using? Denon, Yamaha, and Onkyo have several stereo receivers, and I believe NAD also makes a integrated amp in that price range. You can also go to Audiogon and look for used equipment. You might be able to pick up a nice pre-amp and amp for that price range from adcom...

Best Speaker setup for a large room (Satellites and sub)

Go to a local dealer, not BB or CC, and speak with a sales person. Most of the major brands have speaker lines that will work. As John stated, small speakers won't give you the best performance. Good thing is there are a number of really good sounding speakers in your price range. Check on...

    need speaker advice!

The center channel is the most important speaker for TV and movies since it handles all of the dialog. Bose systems get a bad rap because they cost so much and better performance can be had for less. If you have to stay small, then Bose is a decent option, but small drivers in bose speakers...

How to best utilize my NHT 2.5i system

Do what John said. Under typical situations, a speaker only use a few watts. A speaker with a 85db sensitivity rating will play 85db on 1 watt which is pretty loud. However, if your speakers have a low impedance and low sensitivity then it's reasonable to consider an external amp. Most...

Go listen to a few brands. You would probably do well to consult a custom installer because you want in-wall speakers. There are a lot fo really good brands. I like Paradigm and I think Definitive Technology alot. You can get a good sub for $700 that'll fill the room nicely.

    Klipsch heresy replacement

If you like Klipsch, check audiogon and see if you can pick up a used set. You can check the ID brands. Also consider the Paradigm Mini-monitors for about 350 a pair. To get the big, full sound you're looking for you'll need a sub. Hsu, Outlaw or SVS will be your best bets on that department.

studio monitors for 5.1 set up

He had them hooked up to an Outlaw prepro. The Yammie mentioned above would do a great job. Pros - internal amps offsets the costs by not requiring a separate amp, amps, crossovers, and drivers designed to work together, identical speakers in all positions Cons - have to plug each speaker...

A friend uses Mackie powered monitors in his HT setup with excellent results. Using active monitors does have it's advantages as well as disadvantages. Like all things in this hobby, it's one compromise after another.

Some of the big name B&M brands that are worth looking into are: Paradigm Monitor Audio NHT Definitive Technology Klipsch Boston Polk PSB There are the ID brands such as ACI, Rocket, Ascend, Axiom that are worth looking into especially if they don't make you pay return shipping.

They should. The speakers have more to do with the sound than the electronics. Of course there are a few lemons out there.

Need a new receiver on a limited budget.

You should be able to get a Yamaha or Denon in that price range that'll do what you need. HK makes a good receiver, but I've read a lot of threads about QC issues on some models. Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo are usually safe bets.

    Quality Speakers for the money??????

The most important question is, "Do YOU like them?" If you do, go ahead and buy them. On the other hand, if these are the first speakers you've heard I'd go listen to a few more brands before I bought them. I second the recommendation for the Hsu or SVS or Hsu.

    online dealers

Check audio advisors - I think they sell NAD. You can also go to the manufactures website and do a dealer search. I don't think Rotel allows on-line sales.
