    Best Buy is Crazy!

I just left the retail business this month. We're living in an age of giants, where low margin box pushers like BB, FS, and non-traditional competitors like Canadian Tire, Walmart, even frickin' SuperStore have horned in on the traditional AV B&M bizness. When big box retailers operate at an...

New Toshiba 52hmx85 vs Sony Grand Wega 50

Take a long hard look at the Hitachi. If you can get a clearance deal on the 50V500 or even the 50VS810 it would be worth considering. Speaking as a former corporate drone for Sony, their stuff is good, but not the sine qua non that Sony wants you to believe.

Bryston 4B: will it blow out my speakers?

John, if you haven't already picked up that 4B, why the heck not? In addition to the excellent comments made above, odds are that once you pick that bad boy up, if you call the nice folks at Bryston, they will probably look after you well in terms of servicing your unit. Every story I've ever...

    Shopping for a "new" pre/pro

If you've got the dosh, I'd say go for the Outlaw. Besides, I'd really like to read a review from somebody who's got one. Off Topic: I just retired my PSB 500i's a year ago after 8+ years of faithful service.

My Experiences (So Far) Shopping for a New Receiver

To be fair (and less negative) features like component-video conversion can be darn handy. And having run mic-calibrations many times in-store and in client's homes (hey, I'm basically lazy. if the feature is there, Ima gonna take advantage of it!) it is a useful toy, but hardly life-or-death...

My Experiences (So Far) Shopping for a New Receiver

Features = bah. IMO, features are entirely secondary to build quality and the total amount of jam the amplifiers deliver. Key Features = the number and type of inputs that you require for your install, and a UI that is straightforward. Non-Essential Features = 1001 DSP Sound Fields, mic...

Just got a job at A&B sound!!!

Yes, that Nuance sale was the result of an odd-lot at a liquidation auction where our buyer at the time bought up a whole bunch of stuff, some of it very odd indeed. It did give us a magnificent opportunity to dismantle a Nuance speaker and see what was inside it. :D My beloved confreres...

    phono stage for Goldring GR-1

I'll second the recommendation of the Parasound PHP100, it's cheap as dirt and amazingly clean. Where did you get your Goldring GR-1? I have been told that the GR-1 is a Rega VP-02 built for Goldring, and have been looking for independant confirmation.

    Yamaha RX-V 2500 Problem

In case it has not been mentioned before, Yamaha recommends having your AVR's volume set to -20db when running the YPAO, otherwise you will get inconsistant measurements if the volume is either quieter or louder. Haven't seen the Internal Error you mention crop up ever before, so I have no...

So ... my cat urinated all over my reciever ....

There's nothing wrong with buying a unit that's a year or two older. Unless you have to have the latest feature set, processing and whatever, buying last year's model means you can get more power for less money, which is, in my opinion, more important than anything else superfluous, like...

Best A/V Reciever for under $1k

My opinion lately is to go middle of the road, and look for two things: 1) a decent digital processor, and 2) pre-outs for all the surround channels. This gives you a clear upgrade path to add outboard power when you feel like you want more juice to drive your existing/future speakers...

So ... my cat urinated all over my reciever ....

Joe, that is a life lesson right there. Let me tell you, I am a brutal customer when I am on the other side of the table. I tolerate neither ignorance nor tomfoolery when buying a car, furniture, or whatever. But hey, forewarned is forearmed, right? The Yamaha RXV750 has a retail of CDN$849...

So ... my cat urinated all over my reciever ....

functional, yet attractive! I had 6 inches of water on the floor of a store I used to run because the roof of the department store three hundred meters away in the same mall caved in under torrential downpour. Fortunately, we always kept product off the floor and elevated, so I only had to...

So ... my cat urinated all over my reciever ....

Ah, I remember, you got the raw deal on what should have been a simple price protection at our downtown store. We discussed it here. It's too bad that one salesman (now ex-) can cause everybody there to be tarred with the same brush. But hey, life is all about looking after people, and some...

So ... my cat urinated all over my reciever ....

Joe, your budget, The Denon AVR2105 or the Yamaha RXV750 would fit the bill in terms of being comparable/a slight upgrade. You bought all your gear at the Ark, right?

    Denon 3910

I've only got one other Denon dealer in my market that I have to worry about, and they are famous for holding fast to retail. Of course, they are also famous for their "if you have to ask, then you can't afford it" attitude. The DVD3910 is a hottie, and has a lot of value incorporated into...

    Yamaha S-1500?

We got 2 in, one was presold, and the other I've installed in a video vignette. Unfortunately, I have had no time for the past two weeks to monkey around with it, as is my wont. Normally, I'd have all kinds of opinions at this point, but I've been busy.

Could SACD Sound That Bad ?!?

Phil A brings up an excellent point that I have beaten like a drum for many years. Ultimately, the quality of any recording has more to do with what the engineers in the studio do than anything involving the format per se. It doesn't matter how much you spend on your studio gear, if you don't...

First Impressions of the Denon DVD3910

I am grateful to Denon for supplying both a firewire and a Denon Digital Link cable in the box. Just think, it's probably only going to be a week or two before Monster announces a new $399 DDL cable to solve all of our problems!

First Impressions of the Denon DVD3910

That's reasonably accurate. However, in the words of my Denon rep, the 3910 is "a 5900's hardware in a 2900's chassis." Don't hold your breath. As a former Sony corporate drone, I speak with some experience regarding Sony's ability to bugger up a format. If Sony actually licences Denon to...

First Impressions of the Denon DVD3910

A very stout-looking player. A nice gaggle of outputs. Likes: The 720p/1080i processing on DVI/HDMI works like a damn. Even blown up to a 147" projection screen the picture quality is fantastic. Having both HDMI and DVI is handy in a store setting so I can drive two different projectors...

Please help me choose CD/SACD player

I just unboxed our demo SCDC2000ES and have been playing with it all morning. It is very nice. Is it nice to the tune of more than twice the price of the SCDDE595? Dunno. It is nice though.

Is it dumb to buy a tube TV?

I don't know what's more unusual: that we are all pretty much in agreement on CRT's and their benefits; or that I unconsciously just used the verb "to Raoul" in conversation with total strangers, and everybody understood the context.
