Press Release Criterion Press Release: Nothing But A Man (1964) (Blu-ray)

I wonder why the movie is 1.37:1. It looks absolutely correct at that aspect ratio, but 1.85:1 was the non-anamorphic standard by 1964 in the U.S., with the occasional film in 1.75:1 or 1.66:1, but 1.37:1 wasn't common. Does anyone have any ideas?

How about The Searchers and The Wild Bunch on 4K/UHD in 2023!

Yes, in August 2008 we had this article from The Digital Bits: I think that we should take Mr. Harris's comment as one, figuratively, waved in the general direction of Italy.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ Invaders from Mars – in Blu-ray

Yikes, the stickers were a chore to get off. Fortunately I had warning from the posts here and started out very cautiously. I used a hair dryer (on low) to warm things up, then carefully used a small piece of ordinary 20# bond paper to "chisel" the sticker away from the edge of the slip. From...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ To Kill a Mockingbird -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

There is a scene near the end that looks quite a bit more "dupey" than the rest of the film, at least on the Collector's Edition DVD. I don't have the disc at hand to check and my memory isn't perfect, but I believe it's just before the school pageant, during the daytime, and Atticus and Scout...

Pre-Order Galaxy Quest: 20th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

It's a shame that the aspect ratio change (1.85:1 to 2.39:1) isn't, or can't be, replicated on a home video presentation. Seeing that in a theater when the film was released was a special experience. I would be fine with having the whole film presented in a 2.39:1 window with side masking for...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ La Dolce Vita – in Blu-ray

Does anyone know if the English dub included on this disc is the one from the 1966 US release by American International? Or a more recent one? The 1966 dub is what I heard the first time I saw the movie, via a rental of the Republic double VHS release. I remember the voice acting in the dub to...

Criterion Press Release: Nightmare Alley (1947) (Blu-ray)

Well, regardless of how well they represent the actual disc, to me the Criterion screenshots themselves look like they've been processed to death. Almost as bad as those of the Criterion Children of Paradise or the Kino cleaned up version of White Zombie. Again, the DVDBeaver screenshots...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Destry Rides Again - in Blu-ray

I know that screenshots may not represent what a disc looks like in motion and all the caveats about how the images might have been captured. I also stipulate that I am no expert on what a film should look like. But boy do the DVDBeaver caps of the Criterion blu ray look like the image has...

Blu-ray Review The Oscar Blu-ray Review

Does anyone have any insight as to why this aspect ratio was used for the transfer? 1.66:1 certainly wasn't used much, if at all, in the US in the 1960s.

DuMont network shows -- any hope?

I think the case of "Colonel Humphrey Flack" is unique. It ran live on DuMont in the 1953-1954 season, then was revived as a filmed series by Desilu for syndication in 1958-1959. Wikipedia says that between 12 and 14 of the 39 live episodes are known to exist on kinescope. There are a couple...

Is My Copy of Criterion Detour (1945) Blu-ray Defective?

I really wish that they could have added the frames back if they had them in any half-way presentable condition, even if 16mm. For me, nothing is more distracting than missing frames. Criterion's 8½ DVD (don't know about the blu-ray version) has one instance where a damaged frame from an...

Pre-Order The Iceman Cometh (1973) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

It will be interesting to see how the cut footage looks on this release. It was quite noticable (at least in places) on the Kino DVD ... I hope that Kino can discuss the status of the film elements and what if anything was done for restoration for the blu-ray. That sort of thing fascinates me...

    Bullitt S.E. ?

It's the scene during the chase where the Charger hits the white car (I think I said it was a wall earlier) - the same one as your sceen caps. The revised shot starts at 0:51 in this clip: I presume that this following clip is the original, the black frames are there but the car disappears...

    Bullitt S.E. ?

This was on tonight on the Fox MoviesTV Network and I watched the chase. The shot with the Charger hitting the wall appeared to be the original, with the black frames. It didn't look exactly the way that I remembered it but it didn't have the "disappearing Charger"; the revised version is...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Moderns -- in Blu-ray

Alan Rudolph has directed over 20 features, many of them very interesting, yet he has to be one of the least-discussed directors ever. A listen to his excellent commentary on the DVD of Trixie (one of the zanier comedies of the past 40 years) might give an answer: for that movie, he...

My favorite to pair with this is Fahrenheit 451. Not for any thematic resemblance, but I find they both have a similar strange, detached feel. Also they're from the same year, and David Hemmings and Oskar Werner looks as if they could be brothers.

    Aspect Ratio Documentation

The new BFI BD of Women in Love will have an aspect ratio of 1.75 (the MGM DVD is 1.66) - interesting in light of Bob's posts here about this aspect ratio being the standard for British films of the same general period rather than the 1.66 that is so common on disc now. I know that's not a...

Does anyone have any information on the correct aspect ratio of Symptoms (1974)? The new BFI and Mondo Macabro BDs are both in 1.33:1. I know there are exceptions, but this seems very unusual for a British film from the mid-seventies, unless perhaps it was originally intended for TV(?). I...
