I only just discovered by accident that there were new shots included in this version of SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. I was completely amazed and elated about it. These are golden goodies I have never, ever seen before - and in such clarity! (I am referring first to a sequence where Josephine Hutchinson...
It will be great to have WILLARD even as a barebones release. But I recall thinking for years that it would have been possible to have Bruce Davison and Ernest Borgnine offer up memories, if not a full audio commentary. Ernie has left us, but Bruce is here.
Great News!! It's what I have been waiting to hear for a long time now! I had lost all hope because there hadn't been any announcement in June. :)
Okay, so having gotten that out of the way, I suppose the inevitable "but's..." should be opined now. Yeah, I do kind of think it's a shame that THE...
Oh, so do I, Bob. However, I think that sometimes the diehard film fan thinks more of intent than the original director may have even originally considered -- at some times (not always). When tops of heads are unusually too cramped and bumping the upper frame, I'm not sure the director would...
I'm a fan of having films properly in OAR. Still, sometimes the 'wide' presentations can look unusually cramped, with heads practically scraping the top of the frame. It's one thing to have a huge wasted space gap on top, but I don't mind some breathing room.
I am grateful that we're getting MR. HEX at all (as I'm sure we all are). I suppose while we watch it we should be aware that this is pretty much as good as it's going to get.
But I wonder if no more Gabe wasn't actually a good thing? I say that because he always seemed to be juggled around in different "serious" roles, and nobody knew what to do with him.
By the way - thanks for the welcome back, guys.
I appreciate your diligence in that, Randy ... and I myself as a rule am always a staunch supporter of having things in perfect chronological order whenever possible... but I still feel that The Bowery Boys series is not one which makes a big difference in how they're screened. There are no key...
I just ordered the new Volume 4 Set! I can't believe we now have EVERY Bowery Boys feature! Thanks, everyone, for keeping me updated on this release... I have been checking this thread regularly! I know I'm gonna luv dis set, but den again, dat is a simple seduction!
I did just pitifully this year; I only managed 14 films, but I just really wasn't into it. Spending more time with my music these days...Still, on Halloween I played CITY OF THE DEAD (1960), courtesy of the excellent-looking VCI disc...City of the Dead (1960) ****Sorry, but this movie will still...
I'm happy to say that I received my copy of Volume 3 a couple of days ago - arrived without a hitch, and the discs are pressed!
I haven't settled into watching any of the films, but I'm just tickled to near death at being able to have all these movies together in what will eventually be just 4...
10) Targets (1968) ***1/2
I wanted to show this to my girlfriend and, damn it, if I'm gonna spend time watching a movie it's going to count for the "Scary Horror Challenge"! :) Well, I can stretch this drama into horror because it's "a new kind of horror right on our streets", with a crazed...
I finally put my WA order in - now it's only a matter of time. I can only say yet again that I really appreciate what the folks at WB have done in presenting these Bowery Boys films in such a manner -- great job! If I were to quibble, I would wonder why so many Stanley Clements flicks are on...
08) Grizzly (1976) **1/2
A pleasure of mine, having seen it in the theater when I was 14. The producer claims that this was not a rip-off of JAWS as widely believed, but the many similarities are just not easy to dismiss. Still, this is an entertaining horror film about a 15-foot man-eating...
06) Blacula (1972) ***
My 21-year-old nephew came over to watch some stuff for Halloween, and I tried this feature. He said he'd rate it 4 or 5 out of 10. Well -- Be that as it may, I've always liked this film! I think William Marshall in the role is really dedicated to doing a good job, and...
I decided to mix it up, so I reached for a DVD of a film I think I've only seen once before but did not remember (and with good reason)...
06) Dr. Black, Mr Hyde (1975) *1/2
I decided to stick with the 'Jekyll and Hyde' theme here in choosing this one. I love the film BLACULA (1972), but this...
04) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) ***1/2 -- still the best version of all for me. Watched it last night and still felt frightened and uncomfortable for Miriam Hopkins' Ivy. Fredric March deserved his Oscar for his dual role, even though some of his Jekyll performance feels very out of place...
It's truly great to see you around again, Mario. I'm not sure how much I will participate this year... you know me, always watching a lot of the same stuff -- problem is, I always like saving the Universal horror classics (and other oldies) for "Halloween Season", and thus there's not much 'new'...
I'm thrilled that we have a third volume of The Bowery Boys. I usually order mine as soon as I hear the news, but I may have to wait a few days this time. I hope there will still be 'pressed' copies left...
I'm debating if I want to contribute, only because I like to save the old Universal Classics and other 30s and 40s films to watch for Halloween season each year -- but then that means I'm always writing the same old reviews every year! :) But I also showed a 1950s entry to a friend yesterday...
Why not? Last year I got cut short with a 9-day power outage, courtesy of Hurricane Sandy, so I hope this year goes better...
I have (unsurprisingly) decided to concentrate on 1930s and 1940s titles, and have amassed a list of 90-something titles to attempt to get through (yeah, right! :) )...
Good point. The scene where the robot in BOWERY BOYS MEET walks into some machinery and loses his head was right out of the Stooges' DOPEY DICKS.
Ditto for the gag where Leo Gorcey is hiding under a table and sticks his head up through the table and Huntz Hall thinks he's been decapitated...
I think you're correct, JoHud. I have always noticed this, and it's my view that the reason BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS is a stand-out film in this series (some say it's "their masterpiece") is because it takes elements from the Three Stooges films. The movie was not only directed by Stooge...
Got my set yesterday and the first thing I did was watch BOWERY BOYS MEET THE MONSTERS! Very gratifying to be able to watch this in 'widescreen' OAR for the first time! I thought the print looked and sounded good, probably the best I've ever seen it. There was one (brief) slight imperfection I...
