Help choosing a universal remote for Amp and other units

Wayne is quite correct. The MX-500 is one of the best and most reasonably priced remotes out there. By the way, not only is it capable of learning it also has the ability to program macros into it. That means that you can program it to turn on many pieces of equipment with the touch of one...

    Overheating Question ?

NEVER and I mean NEVER under any circumstances stack anything on top of a receiver, no matter what type of situation you have. You want to take away many years of service and possibly damage your unit beyond repair that is the best way to do it.

    Panasonic SA XR-50

The rule of thumb is: IF IT SOUNDS BAD TURN IT DOWN!!! If you continue to run your equipment at excessive volume you can damage either the speakers, the receiver, or both. In short, you are most likely abusing your equipment.

How do I know a receiver can power a pair of speakers?

Very simply check the power requirements of the speaker. All speakers will give you an operating power range i.e. 50 to 250 watts. Simply see how much power your receiver is capable of and go from there. Usually it is not a big deal as just about any receiver will power just about any standard...

4 ohm M&K's with 6 ohm Denon receiver? Will it work?

M&K make some of the finest speakers in the business. You will have no trouble at all driving them with your receiver. Incidentally, not many people know that M&K invented the subwoofer back in 1973.

    Question about treble and bass???

Tone controls were placed on your receiver for a reason. Each brand/type of speaker handles tone differently. There are also room acoustics to consider. If the flat position were always correct there would be no tone controls on your receiver, however, this is not the case. Rooms that are...

    Question about treble and bass???

Adjust them to where your speakers sound best to you.

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

Scott, the facts have been presented to you. Whether you choose to believe them is another matter. As to audiophiles spending (wasting) large amounts of money, yes, they do. Many "audiophiles" are not happy unless they are spending large amounts of money and feel that the only way to improve...

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

The amps/receivers in the Hirsch/Houck lab tests were not equalized. I stand by my statement, no one can tell the difference between amplifiers. I have had more than a dozen or two throughout the years and have yet to hear one that sounded a bit better or different than the other. If you do, go...

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

Elinor, I am in no way intent on showing you or anyone else how clever I am. I have been in hi-fi audio since the mid 1960's. I have stated a few verities in the hopes that there might be a few people out there that will learn where to put their money effectively to get the highest quality audio...

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

The following is an excerp from a Masters audio archives article dated September 1, 2002: Several years ago Stereo Review magazine [now Sound & Vision] commissioned an extensive series of listening tests to determine whether those listeners who claimed to be able to discern tiny nuances from...

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

Elinor why don't you take the $10,000 challenge? I have posted general information for it below. You should be able to tell your superior amp from a Radio Shack every time, right? For some interesting info about the sound of amps I suggest emailing Richard Clarke - [email protected]. He runs...

    Denon vs. seperates Question?

Is it just audiophile people have an elitist attitude that seperates just sound better? How many people in a true blind test could tell the difference? In a single word: NONE No one to date has been able to tell the difference between amps on highly controlled double blind tests. Many...

    Any Problems w/Panasonic SA-XRx0 Receivers?

Panasonic makes a highly reliable product and probably gives the biggest bang for your dollar. I don't think you can go wrong with their new digital receivers.

    watts or ohms

I think you sort of missed the main point a bit Robert, which is simply: If it is that hard to distinguish a difference between receivers/amps, are you really getting your money's worth on high end equipment. If you are purchasing it for the vanity of owning it, I suppose you are. However, if...

    watts or ohms

Robert, to put it mildly, from the extravagant claims made by high end amplifier/receiver owners in regard to how much better high end equipment sounds than the standard garden variety of receiver/amplifier, it should be a piece of cake to tell the difference between amps/receivers 100% of the...

    watts or ohms

Robert Cowan: The challenge as described in an Audioholics thread: (It specifically states MUSIC NOT TEST TONES) Take ANY two amps (Amp 1 and Amp 2). The amps are tested to find their linear range (i.e. where they operate w/o distortion or clipping). The linear range of the less...

    watts or ohms

"Put my 120 watt Denon receiver against a 50 watt Krell amplifier and the Denon will lose very badly every time." I highly disagree with you Jon W. In double blind carefully matched testing all amps sound the same. There is no difference in audio quality between a Krell and a Denon or any...

    watts or ohms

I have yet to see a receiver that wouldn't handle both 4 and 8 ohm speakers. I don't think you'll have a problem no matter what speakers/receiver you select.

David, from all the rave reviews and absolutely ecstatic owners of the new Panny digital receivers I believe the Panny XR25 would be an excellent choice.

    would a new receiver help?

David, you might want to go over to the www.audioholics.com website and go to the forums there and post your question. There are many Yamaha owners at that site that will be glad to help you out.

    would a new receiver help?

A thought for you regarding tone controls. How many people have a receiver that is capable of automatically equalizing their speaker system? Yamha has this feature and I suspect quite a few other do also. The point being, that after automatic setup is selected and all speakers are equalized by...

    would a new receiver help?

"I can't understand why anyone would want anything other than a neutral system" Because quite frankly many times a neutral system sounds quite flat. I'll wager you that in many instances many people turn up the bass quite a bit on hard rock disks.
  26. Paul S

    would a new receiver help?

I can see that you haven't been in audio very long. Many recordings require the use of tone controls, some being too bright, some being too bass heavy and so on. The very room you are using the system in sometimes require the use of tone controls to compensate for the environment. There is no...

    would a new receiver help?

I can't even imagine getting a new receiver and not adjusting the tone controls. Each set of speakers that you use most likely have different tone requirements. I have yet to have a receiver and use it with the tone controls set at the neutral/midway position.

What's the difference between tubes and solid state?

John, having lived through the 50's and 60's with tube technology, I can tell you first hand that tubes are nothing but trouble. When televisions used tubes they were broken more than they worked. The TV repairman was a very common site at EVERYONE's house. The TV's had two major controls that...

What's the difference between tubes and solid state?

The following is a direct reply by Sound and Vision that can be found on page 28 of the July/August edition: "Okay, Internet, get this: tubes are a waste of money! They're hot, they're expensive, and one prominent manufacturer of tube equipment told me some years ago that the tubes themselves...

What's the difference between tubes and solid state?

"I just bought a new Sovtek 6L6 a couple weeks ago" Talk about a laughable statement. Why didn't you buy a new GTE/Sylvania/RCA/Ratheon 6L6 tube? Very simply because just about no one makes tubes anymore, they are obsolete!!! A Sovtek tube is nothing to brag about.
