John, are you sure about the torridal transformers in all of the NAD receivers? I thought they were only in the T763 and T773 and not in the T743 and T753 (from reading postings on various forums). The NAD website mentions they're in the T773 and T763 but doesn't specify the type of transformer...
I wouldn't worry too much about the weight either, I recently purchased up a Cambridge Audio Azur 540R which weighs in at a light 21 lbs. It easily has more power than the 33 lb NAD T742 that I had previously. I would say it's closer if not greater than the power output of the 40+lb NAD T752...
Jerry, I think that there are just not that many universal changers out there period, so even less are going to have HDMI/DVI support. In fact I only know of four: Toshiba(SD-6915); Yamaha(C750 & C950) and Onkyo(CP802). Howard
Yamaha has announced the DVD-C950 5-disk changer which fits the bill. It's supposed to be available in April, see this link for a few more details: Yamaha DVD-C950
Colin, I had a Pioneer 578a and returned it to buy a Yamaha DVD C750 which has substantially better sound (IMHO of course). Audioholics also gave it a good review and mentioned it sounded better than the Pioneer 578a. Audioholics Yamaha DVD-C750 Review The street price is around US$240.
JoeyR, If you want another changer I'd recommend the Yamaha DVD-C750. The MSRP is around US$300 but you can get one for US$240. Audioholics gave it a very favourable review for CD audio quality (as well as DVD-A and SACD): C750 Review I've had one for over two months now and am quite...
Feisal, yea I'm surprised they don't mention it either. I don't recall seeing it anywhere in the manual. I think part of the c750 is rebadged Phillips gear, do you happen to know if they advertise HDCD support?
Feisal,
I wasn't clear enough...I meant to say that the C750 recognizes HDCD as different from CD and displays 'HDCD' instead of 'CD' on the on-screen display. I'm *assuming* this means it's doing some sort of different decoding.
Think of it as a great excuse to upgrade to the newest technology :) I had a pretty hard time convincing the wife I needed to shell out $400 for a new player when our 7 year old Sony DVP-670D still works flawlessly...
Chris, I hear you. I much prefer a changer, there's just not a lot of selection out there right now. The only other thing I can tell you about the Yamaha c950 is that it uses the same remote as the c750. I know that because on the back of the remote is says c750/c950 :)
Chris, The following blurb:
is from this link: Yamaha c950 News In my case the c750 was at the upper end of my budget (C$400) so, the C$1000 Onkyo CP802 wasn't even an option. I did recall reading somewhere about an Onkyo CP602 changer that was being released in Japan...however I...
If you can get the Onkyo 802 for $350 it's a bargain. It's typically twice the cost of the Yamaha c750. The only negative I've read about the Onkyo is that video is very poor. I've had the c750 for over a month now and am very impressed with the sound. CDs, SACDs and DVD-A all sound very...
IanO, I *think* I have one HDCD, I'll try it out tonight. Say, do the dropouts happen with both analog and digital outputs from the DVD player? BTW, thanks for the region free info.
I can vouch for the new Yamaha DVD-C750 player. I've owned mine for about a month now and am quite impressed with it. Previously I had the Pioneer 578a which was good for DVD-A and SACD (although the disclaimer on the packaging about not playing all DVD-A disks bothered me) however I found it...
Interesting topic. So, say I want a player that will do very good redbook CD and DVD-A but would like SACD support because of the titles available in SACD. Am I better off getting a player without SACD support? I'm thinking of something in the NAD T533 or Cambridge Audio 540D class. Or...
David, that is very odd - I don't know anyone who's had that experience. Certainly I don't have to crank my DD receiver (NAD T742) to get decent listening levels (about -15dB to -10dB on the -60dB to +18db scale) which are similar to say the 11 o'clock position on my older pro-logic receiver (HK...
David, when you route the DVD movie through your DD receiver are you using a digital connection or the 5.1 analog inputs? I know with my DVD player the analog outputs are louder than the digital outputs. You might want to try the analog outputs from your DVD player to be sure that the DD...
David, I *think* I know what you mean. If you're talking movies then the conventional explaination is that older VHS movies were typically recorded way too high. DVDs are recorded 'correctly' which results is lower volume in 'dialogue' scenes, but much louder volume during dynamic scenes. If...
Yea, in fact I belive the Yamaha HTR5790 is the same receiver as the RX-V1400 but generally at a cheaper price. Other receiver brands that are not overpriced in Canada are the NAD and Marantz lines. NAD isn't exactly cheap but at least the prices here are similar to what they are in the US.
John, although this is true, for an analog input signal wouldn't the receiver have to convert it to digital, apply the DSP, and then convert it back to analog with it's DACs? I'm guessing this wouldn't sound as good as if the original source was digital, or does it really make much difference?
I don't think it's more expensive to import non-American electronics into Canada. Typically, most brands of receivers are more expensive in Canada (two exceptions I can think of are NAD and Marantz) presumably due to the lack of competition, a smaller distribution network and less...
Aaron, Well, www.avu.ca has the Denon 3803 on sale for C$1297 (reg. $1697). Assuming the MSRP on the 3805 is similarly priced then I'd guess you're getting it for about $100 off.
Well, since you like H/K I would recommend checking out the HK7200 which probably has power ratings close to 140x5 and it's relatively cheap now since it will soon be discontinued, around $800 or so I believe.
I know what you mean and agree with you to a point. I personally prefer the older 7 o'clock to 5 o'clock volume dial over the digital negative dB readout. I prefer the way the volume scale worked on pro-logic receivers. You may want to try using the 5.1 direct inputs on your receiver if you have...
