Get a cheaper one. They don't have to cost $100 to get the macro programing. Heck you don't even have to like the remote, so long as it works for her.

Get a universal remote with programable macro buttons. You could set it up so all she has to do is press Macro 1 to watch TV or maybe Macro 2 to play the VCR/DVD. A friend of mine has done that so his family can use the system when he's not there. Sean.

I had bad solder joints on the IR receiver in my Kenwood 309 receiver too. A friend of mine took it apart and re-soldered the connections and it hasn't given me a spot of trouble. Look for a tiny crack in the solder around the pins running through the circuit board. They are hard to spot...
