    Speakers for Pioneer 1014(5)

That's the great thing about this forum. When it came time to buy a new TV, I consulted the display forum and got many helpful suggestions. I'm sure I made the right choice for me because of them. I have been very happy with my Pioneer/Athena combination and I hope you will be too.

    Speakers for Pioneer 1014(5)

Last I was in BestBuy they did not have the AS-B1s. They had the new line but they were rather pricey. They are on sale at AudioAdvisor.com while supplies last. I do not find the Athenas particularly forward or bright. In fact I have always wished they were slightly more so. However, for...

    Speakers for Pioneer 1014(5)

Right now Audio Advisor is having a closeout deal on Athena AS-B1s at $100/pr and the center channel is on sale as well. I have the Athena AS-F1s as fronts, the B1-s as rears and the C1 for a center. I just picked up another pair of the B1s to go 7.1 as I just got the Pioneer 1015 although I...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Well, I did it. I couldn't wait any longer and BestBuy had the Sony 34" widescreen HD monitor at $1440 which exactly hit my price point. I take delivery Saturday. Anyone want to come over and watch a movie? I am seriously grateful to all of you for taking the time to help me. I guess in truth...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Gents; I was just at the BestBuy looking at LCD RPTVs and I simply must have one. The picture is unbelieveable. I looked at a whole pile of TVs and frankly I think I would be happy with almost any of them as long as they were set up properly. However, the Sony clearly had the best picture...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Hmmm... Sony LCD RPTV. I think I may have seen one at the Best Buy a while back. Could it have been around $2.5k? In my optimistic moments I think I could hold out for a couple more months and wait to be able to afford it if this was the one I saw. I'll look into it. If it was the one you are...

Scott; Thank you for the excellent description of the meaning of the different inputs and formats. That's exactly what I was looking for. I believe I understand now. Charlie; That is excellent advice. I will do that of course. I'm going to have to take a very close look at any RPTV...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Now look what you've done! What about the Toshiba 46H84 46" Projection HD-Ready TV? Is there something just a wee bit smaller but larger than the Sony 34" widescreen unit that started this all. I would like it to fit, but that bad boy would hang over just a bit and I can get it delivered for...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Wait. HD-DVD? My brain is starting to hurt. Will this then require an HDTV? Emphasis on the word 'require'? And how well will this format do compared to current DVD standards (can of worms anyone?)? I have yet to take the plunge on the music side for DVD-A or SACD because of the format wars that...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Does the availability of "free HD" depend on your market and cable provider? It must. Why would you not choose a display based on whether or not it had an HD tuner? Is that because you can get one later or because the ones that are built in are not particularly good?

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Charlie; Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain that clearly. I had thought this was the case but wasn't sure. The Sony set I'm looking at doesn't have an HD tuner and it's $1600. The newer version is about $2k and it looks like it does come with an HD tuner. Do I understand...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

"Of course you know the Sony is best of the best on this sort of display hands down." That's more or less what I was looking for. I was pretty sure of this based on the sets I had seen at the store, but it's nice to get it from those who know. Once again and sorry to be redundant, but...

Help me understand the difference between these Sony TVs please.

Aha! I must have missed that the 36" Sony was a 4:3. I hadn't noticed anything larger than a 34" in widescreen and that's what I really want. I had even seen the 36" before and it's a massive unit with a great picture. Nobody has commented on the Philips. Is the Sony truly $400 better? It...

I've used the search function extensively and have read what information there seems to be on the subject. I apologize if this question has been asked previously and I missed it. If so please point me in the right direction. If not, here is my situation. I want a widescreen TV. I'm pretty...

    Help with DTS

Thank you all for your replies. I got it working last night and here's what I found out. I have never had 5.1 sound since I hooked up my system. I have been watching movies with 5-channel stereo. Here's how I figured it out: I selected DTS on the D-TV/CBL option and voila the DTS logo lit...

    Help with DTS

I have been through the DVD player manual several times from cover to cover and the only thing it says about enabling DTS is to make sure that the digital output setting on the DVD player is set to "All" which it is. At the same time I have been through the receiver manual and there it says...

    Help with DTS

I just read the thread entitled "I love you Dolby Digital" and the gist of the thread describes a problem I may be having that I would appreciate some help with. I have a Yamaha home-theater-in-a-box from a few years ago that includes the HTR-5440 receiver and the DV-S5350 DVD player...

    High Noon

You have this version and it's that bad? I rented it from Netflix a while back and I didn't notice that the DVD was particularly bad, although I have never seen this one in a theater so I had nothing to compare it to. Anybody else want to weigh in on this before I don't buy it?

The version of this film available at Amazon.com the collectors edition, is in standard format 1.33:1. Is this the original aspect ration of this film? Is there another edition of this coming out soon that I should wait for or is this the one to buy? Thanks in advance.

The Exorcist: 25th Ann. vs. The Version You've Never Seen

Not so. I'm a big boy and I can take care of myself... I had forgotten to mention my enthusiasm for the cerebral side of movies and what you said about this one being 'character driven' is what appeals to me. I'm always surprised at what I end up liking. This could be an eye-opening...

The Exorcist: 25th Ann. vs. The Version You've Never Seen

Sean, Bryan, and Dave; Thanks for the excellent information. Given what Sean says about this movie not having a whole lot of "Boo!" moments, I'm probably going to check it out. Actually I will watch it because I love movies so much and because, as I said earlier, I understand the...

The Exorcist: 25th Ann. vs. The Version You've Never Seen

Can of worms time. You should all have fun with this. I'm 41 years old and have never seen The Exorcist. I don't like horror movies. I don't like scary movies. Yet since I started taking movies seriously this year I have come to realize that people consider this an important film. Because...

Supposedly terrific movies that just didn't do it for you... and why.

I love movies. There aren't too many that I flat out don't like as I can always find something to appreciate, be it the artistic vision, cinematography, the intended message or what have you. The title of this thread is "Supposedly terrific movies that just didn't do it for you.. and...

    Hidden Fortress Criterion

I would like to echo what Matt_P said. The four movie box set is very worthwhile. I picked it up for something like $80 at Best Buy of all places and am very glad to have these titles. Kurosawa is by far and away my favorite director so you should take what I've said above with that in mind...

*** Official MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD Discussion Thread

I just returned from seeing this film. All I really want to add is that, as someone who enjoyed all 21 volumes of the Aubrey-Maturin series, seeing the movie was like meeting old friends. I loved it and hope someone I know wants to go see it so I have a good excuse to see it again.
