I was talking to a salesman at Good Guys in their "high end" department. He stated that the new combo SACD/DVDA players actually convert the SACD DSD to PCM! If this is true isn't this just wasting the sonic advantages of SACD to begin with? Glad I have my "old fashioned" Sony 222ES player...

California Audio Labs (CAL) is out of biz. For this reason, I would demand a very low price on a used unit. Not sure how you might get this repaired. FWIW, I own the Sony 222es and I could not be happier. The 555 sounds better but not radically so. I am still amazed at how good the 222es...

Interesting thread. If DSD is so technically and musically superior to redbook or 24/48 (which I personally believe that it is) then why are some of my best sounding discs are JVC XRCDs which are ultimately 16/44 redbook?

I just got my 222ES based on some of the posts here. I was considering the Philips 963SA but I have heard of too many quality problems. The 222ES sounds very good to my ears. Better than my old CE775. I might get it modded but right now I don't know how SACDs could sound much better than this.
