Win an Onkyo TX-NR1030 9.2 channel Dolby Atmos AV Receiver

Love those Onkyo Receivers! Now, with DOLBY ATMOS sound processing! Being a retired military man, I first got the stereo bug when I was in the US Army stationed in the Netherlands in the late seventies/early eighties. The AAFES store sold all kinds of stereo/electronic equipment. I bought a...

How can I tell if my Panasonic TH-42PX60U Plasma has/is compatible with 24p?

Thanks, Patrick. Can you give me a brief explanation of 3:2 pulldown? I've heard the term before, but I'm not sure I understand it.

How can I tell if my Panasonic TH-42PX60U Plasma has/is compatible with 24p?

I'm going to buy a Blu-Ray player soon, and I keep reading about TV 24p film frame compatibility. Is it important to have it on your TV with Blu-Ray? If so, how do I tell if I have it (not in specs.)? Also, will I see a noticeable difference on my 42" plasma (1024W X 768H) with Blu-Ray?

Standard DD & DTS Tracks of BR DVDs

Recently, I read (HTF?) that because of the higher bitrate of BR DVDS and the player, even standard DD and DTS codecs of BR DVDs sound much better when played through optical or coaxial connections on a non-HDMI receiver. Is this true? What are the bitrates (or differences) for standard and BR DVDs?

    HD Sound and connections

Thanks, Jeff. Another question: With a fully operational receiver that has HD sound decoding, is it a bitsteam signal that is is sent from the player (you must set the player for HDMI>bitstream)? Isn't this the best way to go (transfer/connection)? I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet and I don't...

    HD Sound and connections

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Receiver forum, so forgive me. I read a review of a receiver that stated the following: "Signal sources include a Pioneer Elite BDP-HD1 Blu-Ray player. The player doesn't output bitstream for Dolby TruHD and other new surround codecs, and the receiver has no...

    Blu-Ray with 42' 720P Panny Plasma

Thanks for all the help, guys. I think I'm going to buy a BD player and see how some BD movies look on it before I go out and buy another TV.

    Blu-Ray with 42' 720P Panny Plasma

Do I need to buy a new tv if I buy a Blu-Ray player? I have a Panny 1024x768P Plasma and the picture looks pretty good with SD DVD and TV. Will it do Blu-Ray DVDs justice? I've heard/read that unless you have a screen greater than 42", there isn't a real noticable difference. Does anyone have...

Old DD & DTS formats vs New DD True HD & DTS Master Audio

Doug...Wow! Sounds like it is worth the jump into HD sound & video. Now if only the prices of BR players & DVDs would come down, I might take the plunge a little earlier. Also, I need an HD receiver to take full advantage (mine has component & optical). I just bought a nice receiver a couple...

Old DD & DTS formats vs New DD True HD & DTS Master Audio

Thanks for the reply, Steve. So, one Steve to another, let's say I play the new formats on the same home theater speakers (Polk R15s all around, Polk CSi20 center) I have now, only with the new formats. How do the new fomats sound better? What aspects are improved audibly? Sorry to be so...

Old DD & DTS formats vs New DD True HD & DTS Master Audio

Is there really that much difference in the quality of the new HD sound formats vs the SD formats? I have not taken the plunge into the Blu-Ray DVD pool yet, but I was wondering if the audio is that much better than SD DVD audio. I know the video is visually better, but is the audio audibly better?

what is my Sony S300 doing with audio?

Thanks for your help, Sanjay! I think a new receiver is the way to go as well, since I have a 7.1 speaker (Polk) system already and I can take full advantage of it. I do remember reading something about the subwoofer volume not being loud enough when using the analog outputs/inputs (10db down I...

what is my Sony S300 doing with audio?

Hi Sanjay, I have a few questions that you may be able to help me with. I have a Kenwood KRF-X9090D receiver that is Doble Digital 7.1 and DTS 7.1 compatible via coax or optical (SPDIF), and has analog 5.1 inputs (called "DVD/6-channel"). Questions: 1. If I buy a Blu-Ray player that has...

    5.1 Analog Connections

Thanks, Brad. So, when I finally get an HD-DVD or BluRay Player (after the dust settles on the whole thing), I won't need to buy a new receiver to take advantage of the new soundtracks (mine has no HDMI connections and I like it)?

    5.1 Analog Connections

Can someone tell me what the 5.1 analog connections on some DVD players and receivers are used for? Is there any advantage to using this connection instead of digital coaxial or optical? Do they work with other features of the receiver (THX, ProLogic IIx, etc.) to give a 6.1 or 7.1? I noticed...

HTiB Speaker Sound Better Than My Polks?

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. You are right. My Polk R15s sound much better after listening at length to the Onkyos. John, I think you hit it on the head. The mylar tweeters are very bright. They seem to be installed on all cheaper HTiB speakers systems I've noticed. I have my system...

Can HDMI and optical out on a DVD player be used at the same time?

I have a Panny DVD-S52S player and I am running HDMI to my Panny plasma and the optical out to my reciever. In my Panny plasma, I have the HDMI audio "OFF" and the video on. This way the TV sound doesn't accidentally come on. Also, I think you can turn your TV speakers off as well or instead of...

HTiB Speaker Sound Better Than My Polks?

Nathan...I have listened to Bose and you could be right. They do remind me of Bose somewhat, but they do sound better than Bose because they are bigger. I don't know. They just seemed to jump out at me. But, you may be right. I have not listened to them at length. BTW, I do not like Bose speakers.

HTiB Speaker Sound Better Than My Polks?

I helped a friend set up an Onkyo HT-S790 HTiB 7.1 system. We checked it with Gladiator, the "Battle of Carthage" chapter. I was impressed with the dynamic sound of the speaker system that comes with this system. The sub is adequate, but the sats sounded very clear. The swords and noises seemed...

    Daisy chaining subs good idea?

Thanks, Wayne. Can I use a Rat Shack SPL meter and a test tones to check this? I'm thinking of either buying the Velos (DLS-4000R) and trying it while measuring and taking one back if it isn't beneficial. Where can I get test tones to do this? Does the DVE disc have them?

    Daisy chaining subs good idea?

Hey Wayne...I am thinking of getting two, Velodyne DLS-4000R subs for a great price for my family room. The room is rectangular, and my placement options are limited to opposite corners (like boxers in a rink between rounds). The reason I want two is that I need to make the room "even" in the...

    Velodyne VRP 1200

Bill...Check the Velodyne website. This sub must be connected using a Y-connector to feed both left and right low level inputs to get the maximum power from the sub and allow the Auto on/off feature to work properly. Do you have it connected that way? This problem was discovered after the manual...

    Is DVD HDMI better?

Not sure if my post belongs here. I'm going to buy a Samsung 42" (HL-S4266W) DLP TV and I was wondering what type of DVD player I should buy. I presently have a none-progressive scan player, so I know I need one with that capability, but do I want one with an HDMI output to connect to the input...

What Does A Voice Coil Serve To Do?

Here's a question: My subwoofer has two RCA jacks on the back. The instructions say to connect the subwoofer from my receiver to the left jack if only one output is provided by my receiver. However, I heard that I could connect a female to two male RCA adapter to the sub out jack of my...

    Pioneer VSX-1014-S Receiver

    Pioneer VSX-1014-S Receiver

I have the ability to purchase a brand new Pioneer VSX-1014-S receiver for $199 shipping free, no tax. I know it is not the latest model (there is a VSX-1015), but the price seems pretty good. It will be used mostly for home theater, not music. I'm comparing it to the Yamaha HTR-5850 I can get...
