I had to fool a lot with my CHT12 before I got it positioned and adjusted correctly. I now find it very musical and rarely have to crank it past the 1/4 mark. There is great bass at even that setting. It is not boomy either yet it provides gobs for movies. It is pretty good all around performer...
"I noticed that the Polk has some shielding problems with its center speaker. Is the higher price worth it? Any other suggestions would be appreciated." Which one are you talking about? I have a CSi40 and I have it right on top of my monitor and the picture has no red areas etc associated...
I have discovered as well that a disc will sound better when set differently. I have found these 3 configurations, all with subwoofer on: 1) mains large and rest small, 2)all speakers large and 3) all speakers small. To go along with this some discs need a fixed setting and other benefit from...
Well personally I would go with RTi70's up front with a CSi40 centre and RTi38's for the surrounds. Add a Velodyne, SVS etc etc sub but not a Polk. I have had Polk's for a few years now and for the money they beat most other speakers I have heard. Resonances? Don't hear any. Clarity? Hear a lot...
I have a 12" Velodyne in a room 12" by 17" and it is more than adequate. I found through much fooling around that placement was extremely important and the sub was best when the subwoofer output on the receiver was set to a gain of +8 DB. This gives sufficient input to the sub so the noon...
Yes, stereo is dead in my mind. It has run it's course with the advent of surround. Long live multi-channel! Until something better comes out of course. It's really quite simple. If it is out in DVD-A or SACD surround, play it that way. If you only have it in stereo then use DSP to enhance it. I...
There are so many variables when comparing one piece of equipment to another that the only way of actually doing a fair comparison would be to unplug one player and plug the other one in and leave all other things (speakers, wiring, room acoustics etc) consistent. The Denon should be better for...
Quote: Unfortunately, that's the wrong thing to do for the DV-45a *if* you are using DVD-A or SACD as a source. For these sources, setting the mains to LARGE eliminates sub output, period, even if the source is 5.1, even if the sub is set to ON. I can see that being an annoyance for those with...
I set the levels to "fixed" and then I adjust the subwoofer volume on the back of the subwoofer. I use the 6 channel analog for everything. So 2 controls to change depending on the disc; volume level on the receiver and volume level on the back of the subwoofer.
Thanks Mike. I found that even the previous speakers that I had, RTi70's (mains) and RTi38's (rears) were excellent speakers. Over time I have come to realize that Polk, as of late, have been making really good speakers. At least to my ears anyway.
I know what you eman about the subwoofer not blending. This is why I keep everything large and the subwoofer on. The mix is therfore maintained in the output. This is the way that music should be. Well I very recently upgraded most of my speakers. Before I had the RTi series of Polk Speakers and...
Well correct me if I am wrong but I have all speakers set to large so only the bass destined for the LFE through the original mixing is going through the subwoofer. This also means that there is no 100 hz crossover employed under these circumstances. The 100 hz crossover is only employed on...
I have a 45a and you are correct about the bass management for DVD-A. If there is no LFE output in the disc, there will be no sub-woofer output for DVD-A even if you have your speakers set to small. However, how many 5.0 discs are out there anyway? Maybe some of those Beethoven Discs and a few...
Chris, Don't cut yourself off from one of the hi-rez formats. These days there is no reason for it. I have around 100 hi-rez discs. About half are SACD and the other half are DVD-A. Both formats are fantastic when done properly. There are bad DVD-A discs (The Doors for instance) and there are...
Depends what you want. Video or audio performance. I had an RP82 and as it could only do DVD-A for hi-rez, I bought a Pioneer 45a that also does SACD. I noticed an immediate improvement in the DVD-A area on the Pioneer and I mean quite a considerable improvement to my ears. Mainly in detailing...
Well the 45a is the best all around player for high-quality music that I have heard. I don't use it much for video but when I do I see no problems. I am using a 32" direct view so it is not high-definition but everything from the video output is wonderful. For me it is the ability to play...
Oh, and I forgot. The SACD of Dark Side of the Moon is much inferior to the DTS version I have of the original QUAD Alan Parsons mix. Anyone that I A/B it with agrees. The SACD release was a mistake no matter what the band and other people say. I only use the SACD to show other people that...
This thread is so long.................... Well Beck's Sea Change is the best sounding multi-channel SACD that I have and The Game is probably the best sounding DVD-A. The Aaron Neville discs are also very good (surprise they are Silverline, the bane of DVD-A) but you have to be into that...
I have 2 RTi70's as mains, a CSi40 as a centre and 2 RTi38's as surrounds. This is an awesome system and I am extremely picky when it comes to sound. I can hear nothing wrong with this setup. I mainly play DVD-Audio and SACD on it with the odd movie. I suggest that you spend some more money and...
It's pretty simple. I use the 6 channel analog mode on my 45a for everything. In stereo mode if there is not enough bass I put the mains on small and use the subwoofer. If there is enough bass I leave the mains on large. Simple.
Well I wasn't planning on going for the companion Pioneer receiver to hook the hi-rez up digitally. That and the better video section are really the only 2 things that differentiate the 47ai from the 45a. The section I am primarily interested in is audio so I saw no need to spend the extra...
Well like I said my primary usage is not video. In fact even when I play DVD-A discs I usually shut-off the video out on the player. It is killer for audio though. I have a lot of DVD-V concerts and DVD-A discs and SACD discs (a couple of hundred in total) and all sound better on this player...
I have a 45a and I paid $849 (before tax) for it about 4 months ago at Whitby Audio. You can currently get the price as low as $749 I have heard. Try Downtown Audio Video In Toronto on Yonge Street. There is already a 2 year guarantee. At 4 months, this is the longest I have had a player. The...
I can't comment. I have the same match all around. All Polks which I am really impressed with. Their newer series is much better than the stuff they were putting out 10 years ago. I can't hear any flaw in them and I am picky. Same 1" silk tweeters and the same 2 x 6.5" drivers in every cabinet...
When all is said and done it all comes down to what it sounds like. I play both hi-rez formats and they both sound fantastic or abysmal depending on the authoring, mixing etc process. Dark Side of The Moon sounds phenomenal and so does Zephr - Voices Unbound although I have to give the nod to...
I can play both DVD-A and SACD. I have always been an early adopter. I had my first CD player in 1982 when they first came out and have had around 10 players since then. My first DVD-A player was a JVC followed by a Panasonic RP82. I started in DVD-A around 9 months ago. Before that I was buying...
