AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

Knute Rockne All American (Bacon, 1940) :star: :star: 100 Quotes - Tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper. What a great line. Reagan was quite good in this, did a bang up job delivering this heart-tugger. Really liked the first half of the movie as...

AFI 100 Years Series Discussion & Challenges, vol. 2

Soylent Green (Fleischer, 1973) :star: :star: ½ 100 Quotes - Soylent Green is people! The quote pretty much spoils the movie. We're left with a good supporting performance from Edward G. Robinson, a performance I liked from Charlon Heston, and a cheesy, 70s retro look for the 21st...

The Big Broadcast of 1938 (Leisen, 1938) :star: ½ 100 Songs - Thanks for the Memory Series of comedy sketches and songs, loosely tied together by a silly script - a race by two ocean liners across the Atlantic. Stars W.C. Fields, and Bob Hope in his first full length film. The...

The Sandpiper (Minnelli, 1965) :star: :star: ½ 100 Songs - The Shadow of Your Smile Melodrama I liked more than I thought I would. Corny, sappy, dragged at times but I still liked it. I think Minnelli's very good with melodramas, showcases Taylor and Burton at the height of their fame...

    Are There "Positive" Political Films?

If you're looking for a film that shows a politician in a positive light, one portraying a politician as a saint would serve nicely I think. MichealBa - most political dramas need conflict to make an interesting film for the viewer. People have listed films where the 'hero' of the film is...

    Are There "Positive" Political Films?

Somewhat over-flattering is a bit of an understatement. Gandhi is showed very positively, heroically even - as the politician who wrestled Indian independence away from the British.

Adam - Inherit the Wind... I liked the film a lot, too. I read in a Gene Kelly biography that Tracy and March, two proud old pros, didn't get along too well on set, forever trying to steal scenes from each other in the courtroom. If I remember correctly, when Tracy was speaking, March...

Matthew - I didn't care for The Paleface much either, Bob Hope's humour doesn't get me laughing much. I remember reading a synopsis at All Movie Guide or the like that the movie's noteworthy for being the Blazing Saddles of its day. I liked the song Buttons and Bows, I don't have a problem...

Bright Eyes (Butler, 1934) :star: :star: AFI 100 songs - "On the Good Ship Lollipop" Orphaned Shirley Temple is caught up in a tug of war over who gets to adopt her. A rich old curmudgeon, and her Godfather, a poor pilot. Temple is quite cute, and quite a performer at age 5. I...

    Downfall

Kobayashi's epic The Human Condition I, II, III gives an account of Japan's occupation in Manchuria from (if I remember correctly) 1943 through the Soviet victory and imprisonment of Japanese troops. It's a clear condemnation of Japanese fascism through its brutality / enslavement of the...

Why do people get upset about dubbing?..

Also the singing in most musicals. And, Fred and Ginger's tapping was dubbed after the fact. Hermes Pan did the 'dubbing' (tapping) for Ginger's dancing in the films he worked on with them.

    70's Exploitation Films, Any recommendations?

Hi Russell - Sweet Sweetback is the grandaddy of all the Blaxpoitation films, historically important for film buffs for that reason I think. But I didn't enjoy it much either - it's production values are bargain basement. An underground low low budget effort that has a cheesy awfulness that...

Astaire / Rogers Collection Vol. 1 coming from Warner in August

I've seen all 10 of Fred and Ginger's films, I'm very happy with this set, 5 of their 6 films I really like. If it were a box set of 6 which included the Gay Divorcee it would have been perfect. If they release a set of their other 5 titles, I won't be buying it.

    Teresa Wright passed away.

Can anyone comment on her post 1950 films? I liked her very much in her early films - Little Foxes, Pride of the Yankees, Mrs. Miniver, Shadow of a Doubt, Best Years of Our Lives. However, I was disappointed with her performance in The Men (1950) playing the sweetheart to crippled war...
