I disagree. It tells us something very important. It tells us that Boomer suspects she is a Cylon but is still in denial. This is something which has not been made clear until now. Previously we didn't know whether she knew and was playing her part well, was in total denial of the possibility...
They have a right to fight theft. And we, as the legitimate paying consumers, have a right to complain when their poorly thought-out "anti-theft" measures inconvenience us.
That's not always true. The show producers don't necessarily control broadcast order. For example with Firefly, the broadcast order was TERRIBLE. They didn't even air the pilot until near the end of the run. On the DVDs they are shown in the intended order.
I saw what looked like the elephant trunk as well. I rewound and watched it a few times and I'm pretty sure it was just her arm as she was putting on the jacket
Plenty of sci-fi doesn't have aliens. When you come right down to it, the whole idea of sci-fi is exploring human reactions in the face of different technology, aliens, societal changes, or whatever. In my experience sci-fi is ALL ABOUT "human encounters" so I guess I just don't understand your...
Maybe I just haven't read enough sci-fi, but I rarely if ever see motivations which are totally un-human. I guess I just don't really understand this criticism. If you have a story driven my motivations which make no sense to humans, then the story itself tends to make no sense. Similarly...
The problem with the ending has nothing to do with the fact that it is on a subway, or that Max gains the confidence to stand up to Vincent. It is the fact that a guy with no experience with firearms (or at least it is so indicated earlier in the film) gets into a point-blank standoff with a...
quote: The last sci-fi movie or TV series I remember liking in recent years was Twelve Monkeys. From what I saw of them, I didn't like Stargate SG-1, Farscape, or any of the popular sci-fi TV shows. I like B5 so much because of the strong character-driven stories. The series feels like...
I'm sort of surprised to hear people say the first episode was so bad. I quite liked it and thought it was very good for a premiere episode, which usually tend to be pretty bland. There are definitely a few after that which aren't great though.
Joseph, if you had been keeping up with the process at all you would know that the decisions about DRM are totally separate from the decisions about video codec. MS provides several different types of DRM, including ones which don't have to dial in anywhere. It is also not decided if MS DRM will...

I think it is pretty unlikely that there will be many movies released on DVD/wmv9. Right now the only way to play those movies is with a PC, and a pretty high end one at that. I think the whole thing is more of an experiment to prove the value of their codec and it's possible modes of DRM.

Copyright law makes it illegal to take someone's work, create a derivative work, and distribute that. It is one of the primary elements of copyright. Whether the studios are actually losing money does not necessarily matter. Their work is being used without authorization, and they have the right...
DVDs are not actually enough to hold really high quality HD. Yes they have been making a few select releases of WMV encoded HD material, but there are a few problems with this. First of all, it is so highly compressed that the hardware requirements for decodng are extremely high. Second, it...
1) The DVD players wouldn't be running Windows. The codec has nothing to do with the OS. 2) The major selling point of the coded is most definitely not DRM. It is that it provides better quality/space than anything else out there. The DRM isn't even under consideration yet, it is up to the...
It wasn't just about patriotism. It was about the political climate in which anyone who disagreed with the President after 9/11 was labeled "unpatriotic" or "unamerican" and made a pariah. This happened, and satirizing it is a perfectly valid thing to do.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no reason that cable companies would have to switch to all digital. The point is the FCC wants to reclaim the analog tv signal frequencies, not that they are specifically pushing digital technologies. That has nothing to do with cable. Cable companies already...
I don't know how the season 2 box set was priced, but when I bought the season 1 box it was a bit over $100 I think. The two-disk volumes which have been released for the rest of the series can be gotten for $20-$25 each, with 5 or so per season. So the price difference isn't that much really...
HD-DVD is not sticking to red laser, they are going with blue laser as well. What they *are* doing is using newer, more efficient compression codecs. This is actually a good thing. The newer codecs can achieve equivalent picture quality in half the bitrate of MPEG-2. With the same bitrate...
Phil, did you not read Adam's posts? It has nothing to do with the overall space of the DVD. The DVD format has a set maximum bandwith of 9.8 megabits per second. If the DVD could hold 100 GB, the bandwidth restriction would hold. This restriction is based on the the speed of reading from 1x...
I was only half kidding really. I'd buy a new series by JMS sight unseen. I'm actually expecting within the next few years for a show which gets canceled but then develops a following on DVD to try the direct-to-dvd idea. Something like Firefly could possibly pull it off, if the dvd sales...
You've got a good point on the getting a scanner for the office, but I'm pretty sure the recording of Sark's inflight conversation was off the plane's flight recorder, not due to some cell-phone interception
Greg_R, using the HD stream from your OTA tuner isn't really any better than what they did. You're just using a higher resolution MPEG-2 stream. The problem is that some of the codecs may accentuate the MPEG-2 compression artifacts more than others, making one look worse when re-encoding MPEG-2...
From what I understand, it wasn't the end of the shadow war that was rushed. That was always planned to take place in the first half of season 4. Later parts of the season were rushed a little, and the early character/story development of the telepath war was pushed into season 5 (part of the...
They actually addressed that in passing. The idea being that while he may have believed he was prepared to die, actually facing death could change his mind. It was a desperate move, but Jack didn't have much other choice
Not only that Kevin, but when you get into the really meaty episodes you will start to wonder how the hell people watching it the first time around could stand to wait a week between episodes :D
