Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. I broke down and just moved the theater back downstairs. The sound is just horrible in a perfectly square room, and I was spending too much time trying to make this work. Thanks for the measurements Mike SJ. I'm going to try building that tonight.
I guess I won't sell the Tempest and try to make due with what I have. If I could get away with an 18 or 19" width and depth, how high would I have to build the box to get ~120-122L Moving the theater into this small room wasn't such a good idea
I built the 122L to really test if it would make much of a difference. It did, but the placement needs to be towards the corner of the room (it sounds best there) and the 22" of space it takes up is just a little too much.. I would have to move my right speaker in, which won't work because it...
Just got done building a 122l sealed box. Huge improvement over the 67l box! I wasn't expecting this much difference. I haven't taken measurements yet, but it exceeded my expectations. I moved the box around to every location in the room. About 2ft increments until I found the right place...
I don't believe you need a "Y-coupler" to seperate the mono signal. You run speaker cable from your stereo's left speaker connection to one of the voice coils on the Tempest. Then run another speaker cable from the stereo's right speaker connection to the other voice coil. In your...
I'll try the larger sealed first and hope for the best. My current 67l sealed dropped like a rock and couldn't hear anything below 30hz. Which is exactely what showed in LspCAD when I put it in. The 120l doesn't look a whole lot better, but real world experience is always different.
Scott- That looks great! Do you know what one of these sound like? I don't want it to be too boomy. The eztube with 12" Shiva from creative sound solutions is looking really good right now for only $300. About the same as if I bought a another 12" with 15" passive radiator. Mike & John-...
I'm trying to LspCAD to design a box and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. I have a 12.5'x12.5' room with a sliding door to the rear closet that is 2'x4' (Sub could go in closet, but doesn't have to.) I've put in the following in LspCAD The Adire Alignment looks good in it, but I...
I wanted to try using an extra receiver to run my Tempest. Please help with setup and wiring. Do I run my regular subwoofer output (one wire) to some input of the extra receiver. Which input would I use? Next how would I wire from the extra receiver to the tempest? I believe the extra...
I have a Tempest in the Chebychev alignment. 65L sealed box. It was for a 13x30 9ft ceiling room that also opened up to other parts of the house. It sounded great. The hometheater has now been put upstairs in a 13x12, 7ft ceiling room. No matter where I put the sub, it sounds muddy. Hard...
Did you just apply the Miniwax Ployshade over the other stain or did you do any stripping? I also have a mahogany stained Tempest/coffee table made from cherry and it looks horible. Very blotchy. I can't sand it down because the sides and front are 1/4 cherry plywood.
Would this be more beneficial than buying something like Klipsch or Paradigm? The reason I ask is because I can demo name brands, but I can't demo DIY. If I had a chance to demo my current DIY speakers, I wouldn't have bought them. I did it because of recommendations on this board for a...
I have 3 of these as my LCR in a 5.1 setup. SCH- K05B50 And a Tempest in a sealed enclosure. Room demensions- 25l x 14w x 9h Couch in middle facing a projector screen. Carpet throughout with back left opening up to 25' ceilings. I would like to move these speakers to the back and...
I've got an old Kenwood 8" subwoofer with a 100w amp on the back. I would like to build a sealed Shiva or Tempest and was wondering if it's ok to use this until I can afford a better amp. It has one input on the back with an adjustable crossover that can be turned on and off. Thanks.
I personally couldn't stand the X1 and the limitations. Outputing to a 106" screen made from blackout cloth. Tried grey too. I am just too sensitive to the rainbox effect and my wife noticed quite frequently too. Now on to the Z1 and my personal opinion. This thing looks amazing. Hooked...
My layout is identical. I only have a 10" sub and found that it was too weak with the three speakers up front. I put is right by the couch and its sounds great.
Hank Frankenberg is right. A good polyurethane is what to use. I recommend Sealacell or Armrseal from General Finishes. They are inexpensive, easy to apply, very forgiving, and very durable. I use it on all of the furniture I make including the dining room table (which should tell you how...
When switching between audio sources such as the menus on a DVD, or between stereo and DD, I get a long dropout in sound (about 1-2 seconds) followed by loud clicking sound. (Sounds like amps clicking on). Is this a problem with the receiver or the dvd player? It's an old Kenwood VR-407...
Now I'm really excited after hearing everyone's comments.
Especially against the Axiom which I have heard before.
Two last questions though.
#1 Anyone have a picture of these speakers with a maple, oak, or cherry veneer?
#2 For asthetic appeal only I would like to get the K05C25 center...
Thank you for the quick responses. K05B50's it is (Unless someone would like to chime in about the BR-1's.) I looked into the center channel from SCH, but they are sold out and claim they are doing a redesign. I thought perhaps another of the bookshelf's as a center would do fine. (Underneath...
I need 5 speakers and a powered sub for HT use only. 11x14 room. Front projection so no shielding necessary. Receiver is a Marantz 4200. I would like people's opinions on these two inexpensive kits. I picked these because of the price range and ease of construction. I have a full shop so...
I personally have ran just the front three and sub. I found not adjusting anything on the receiver works best. Let movies play in 5.1. and don't use 3stereo, or whatever your receiver calls it. I tried downmixing the rears to the front and it just doesn't sound right. So set up your receiver...
I had to get some speaker wire so it could go all the way around to the front of the entertainment center. It doesn't sound as good imho. Partly because the speakers are only 5ft apart instead of 6. The other reason, it sounds more boxy and a big difference in the lower end. So back to...
