Wow a tough crowd here. Most of the disappointed seem to have been devoted to the graphic novel. I never read it, despite having worked in a comic book store. For sheer audacity and ambition this outstrips The Dark Knight easily. I am seriously thinking about seeing this again in the theatre...
So funny to see people picking nits over the plot and hoping for some more backstory or exposition. The allspark is a maguffin, and exists solely for the purpose of having the big robots bash the hell out of each other. There was no real story line here. A lot of the movie was superfluous too...
No one should be walking into the theater with any illusions as to what type of film this is. This is a Michael Bay movie through and through. Lots of stuff blowing up, alot of quick cutting action scenes that'll make your head spin. Too many attempts at humour including some blatant racial...
The fanboy in me is expecting to be crushed with disappointment. Like many men of a certain age I grew up with the G1 Transformers and they still are a treasured part of my childhood. Thats why so many are up in arms about all of the changes. Its like Michael Bay is violating something personal...
The trailer was awesome but my enthusiasm for this is kept in check by Bay's past work and the fact that this isn't really Transformers at all. Killer robots from outer space, yes. Transformers, no.
Sunshine - B+ Just go see it, but I don't think this will get a wide release in the States for a while. I'm a fiend for sci-fi, though some of the science in this film appears very shaky. The third act threatens to derail the entire film...and the effectiveness of the 'pay-off' in the climax...
Twist endings have become so common now that they have to pack a real punch to one up classics like Usual Suspects and Seven. Usual Suspects was the first movie to leave me floored and I haven't seen an ending like it since. What about bizarre twist endings? Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl...

Miami Vice I enjoyed this a lot. HTFers comments saying it dragged and that it was too 'talky' are probably justified though that aspect is what made the film for me. Michael Mann's movie immerses you in his world, and he doesn't stop to spell out acronyms or explain cop talk like most films...
Just updated with my fourth movie of the year. I vowed to be more active in going to see movies in 06 but nothing has really excited me this year *shrug* Superman Returns The character of Superman is an anachronism, conceived more than 50 years ago when the world was a much different...

I'll be another to recommend 'Go'. Really makes me nostalgic for the ill behaviour of my youth and just hanging with the guys.
Short Cuts did receive positive critical reviews but does anyone think this is a great film? I found it interminable and didn't find any of the characters...
War of the Worlds All year I've waited for a film to captivate me and leave me enthralled. Now I can rest easy, at least until I see this again. Scenes of mass destruction and carnage that are the best effects I have possibly ever seen. There are flaws, but sometimes a movie makes such a...
I've listened to X&Y a few times now (have bought lots of CDs in the past week while my DVD wishlist is getting neglected). In short, I'm just not 'feeling' this record. White Shadows and Talk are excellent. Fix You is the kind of lighter waving anthem that stadium crowds eat up. The rest...
Its been almost three years since DAD. When Bond returns, it won't be until 2006 or later. Its likely we will see a new Bond and he'll probably be young. It's been 40+ years since the first film. I'll bet many young people haven't even seen a Bond movie with Sean Connery. I'm young (27) and...
Finally got my 2005 list up and running this week. Assault on Precinct 13 (C+) is an update of a John Carpenter film which in turn was inspired by Howard Hawks' 'Rio Bravo'. I haven't seen Carpenter's film so I can't compare it to the 2005 film, but its a loud action packed affair (just about...
Been following the Oscars on the internet...in this thread actually. Thanks guys! I can't watch it later tonight but I wanted to, to see how Rock did. I'm disappointed Aviator lost, but congratulations to Clint. He appears to be level headed and humble whenever I see him. Classy guy. Marty...
You'll get no argument from me. There wasn't much originality in the idea to begin with and I felt the twists in the turn were too contrived, illogical and just didn't 'sell' the premise to me. It almost felt like a parody of Seven, rather than a homage/rip off. But I just think that you could...
I really didn't have a problem with this film stealing from Seven. It was the execution of it that was poor, and that can be attributed to the tiny budget and the inexperience of the director. Cary Elwes and Danny Glover have been around and have no excuse. The part where Shawnee Smith's...

Thanks for the review, Herb. You just saved me some money. I'll wait until his title is release on the next format. I didn't double dip on Leon either. I think these studios are trying to milk us for as long as they can.
Thanks for the suggestions Brook. I have seen Twilight samurai and liked it a lot. I'm going to try to find some of those Takeshi Kitano films, saw Hana-bi years ago and enjoyed that one.
After Life (Wandafuru raifu) (1998) 1-22-05 Japanese film about a group of newly deceased souls who arrive at a boarding-house and are asked to select a memory that was the most meaningful to them in life. This memory would be slavishly recreated and filmed by the counsellors and once viewed...
I've noticed that those with muted expectations going into the movie - myself included - were able to enjoy it more. I didn't 'brace' myself or lower my expectations simply because I was not drawn to the film's horror aspect, which the marketing campaign clearly highlighted. While I watched it...
