Keep in mind you'll need a multiplexer if you're running a DTivo and another receiver. 2 connections from the dual LNB and 3 connections total to your 2 boxes. I opted for a 4x6 and stuck an antenna on for FM reception. Each of the 6 outs from the mux gets all signals. Also, if you hadn't...
I was able to compare the CC-170 and 270 in an A/B environment exhaustively. Until you do, you won't realize the details your ears are missing. Go bigger $$ with the center- it does the lion's share of the work. I'm seriously afraid to listen to the 370 or Studio/CC.. I know I'll want them. =)...
An elegant solution would be to pass information digitally over distance rather than via analog cabling. Build a small, silent, inconspicuous machine next to your ht and connect it to your data sources via ethernet. You don't have to deal in exotic cabling, signal amps, infrared bouncers, etc...
back to the original request, soundcard- M-Audio flavor (the Revolution is nice!), or do some reading at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org for even more obscurely named cards. home theater model- look through the HT Basics forum, try for seperates if they fit your budget
I built one a couple months ago using a Shuttle SB51G as the base. I've historically bought AMD, but went with Intel to make cooling in a small space a non-issue. You could also underclock/undervolt to help with this as well. Still working on an AIW and decent audio card to record from the TiVo...
Warning- TiVo fan-biased reply! :) One thing that might be confusing in the TiVo vs DIY DVR issue is the differences of DirecTivo vs a stand-alone TiVo. The stand-alone costs somewhere around $350-$400 plus or minus hard disk sizes. The newer (released Nov, was pretty hard to find in stock)...
Thanks for all the great responses! Francois, the SS51G is exactly the model I was eyeing. Brian, thanks for pointing out the Alienware boxes. They look to be built Shuttle boxes, with sexy painting. If it comes to that, maybe I'll get a quart of black Hammerite from Home Depot and put my...
Not having a good display, I can only speak to audio calibration. Go to Radio Shack and buy the meter! (and tripod if you haven't one) You'd be surprised at the difference calibrated sound makes. Some scenes sound so good they scare me now. Example! Extended Fellowship of the Rings when...
I've been experimenting with building quiet/silent PCs lately. My gaming machine is an o/c'd Athlon XP 1900+, however with Athlons you really need to be careful with cooling etc, which *can* mean noise from the high-RPM fan. I solved this with a Thermalright AX-7 and pot-adjustable fan...
Only thing about matching a CC with the Monitors would be that the CC-170 has a 3/4" tweeter vs the Monitors' 1" (CC-270 has a 1" as well, but it is half-incorrectly listed on Paradigm's site). I've compared the 270 vs 170 and there was a noticeable difference between the two tweeters. Thank...
