    suspended ceiling lighting options

Definitely lose the fluorescent fixtures. Track is a good option. Particularly if the voltage for the fixtures is 120V and you can add a dimmer switch. MR16 lamps will produce a bright white light or dim down to a soft glow. The advantage is that you can highlight artwork on the walls...

How much does it cost to find out you're a moron?

When I was a kid, I used to sneak my sister's suitcase-type record player into my room to listen to her records. This was a big no-no in my house. One afternoon, I grabbed it, went into my room and shut the door. I went to plug the cord into the wall, but the prongs were splayed out a little...

I've seen this happen to DirecTV content, also. When it happens, it varies from channel to channel.

Ackkk! Digital Watermark behind the TV image on "Alias"

You know, this may or may not be related, but every once in a while I can see a full screen "ghost" image of my local ABC affliate's logo on screen. It usually occurs at a commercial break when the screen goes black, waiting for the start of the commercial. It looks a lot like one of the...

Panasonic or SONY for interlaced output?

I have heard that the Sony's have better 4:3 conversion than others (from Cnet.com), but they also have a little softer picture. Read this review at Cnet.com. They don't like it's edge-enhanced interlaced output.

What is the most disturbing movie you have ever seen?

doH! Prince of Darkness for sure! Also, Serpent and the Rainbow gave me the willies. But the MOST disturbing movie I've ever watched was Bad Boys (1983) with Sean Penn on cable late one night. I was just a kid, and that movie probably did more to keep me on the straight and narrow than...

    Anamorphic DVDs On 4:3 TVs

What do broadcast television shows like ER shown in "widescreen" look like on a widescreen television? Do you still have the black bars on top and bottom as with a 4:3 set?

There's Been A Change In The Osbornes/Donn7 & Marie Ad

Huh? I saw the ad two or three days before the SuperBowl on Entertainment Tonight or Extra... it looked finished then. I don't specifically remember the close-up from the preview, but I think I remember a close-up in the superbowl, because I noticed Florence Henderson's mole. At any...

Digital Coax versus Optical Cable for Audio?

It's my opinion that both will provide EQUAL sound quality, since they are only passing digital information. But this is the subject of much controversy. However, toslink (optical) is probably less reliable because dirt can get into the connections, or the connections themselves tend to be...

Want a "different" racing game, recommendations, anyone?

I liked Wipeout Fusion for the PS2 a lot. If you like more arcade style racing, Midnight Club and Smugglers Run are a lot of fun, especially with 2 players playing Capture The Flag. I think they're both Greatest Hits, now, so they can be had for cheap.

Center channel crackling problem on HK 525

I noticed a crackling distorted sound from Austin Powers Goldmember during the opening credits when Britney is singing. It's in the center channel, and it always sounds the same no matter what the volume.

Lord of the Rings EE--Locks up on PS 2

Didn't skip on mine, and the driver is 2.10... However, I have had other discs in the past have trouble with layer changes on the PS2. Often, I have to tell the PS2 to "analyze" the disc and it will play fine. To do the analyze thing, eject the disc and get back to the PS2's main menu...

Lord of the Rings EE--Locks up on PS 2

Man, I couldn't tell you what the latest driver is. I'll look at it tonight and report my findings. The Sony-branded remote comes with a disk that updates the driver to a memory card on the PS2. It takes up about 2MB. I'm not sure if there are any other ways to update the driver.

Lord of the Rings EE--Locks up on PS 2

I don't recall having the problem on my PS2... I'll check it again this evening. Do you have the latest DVD driver in your PS2? They come with the Sony branded remote.

Aspect Ratio Control on DVD players

Hear, hear. I agree with Patrick. 2:35 on a 16:9 set wastes about 25% of screen real estate. 1:85 wastes less than 4% but overscan takes care of that. It would be a DIFFERENT story if all the material released in 2:35 made significant cinematographic use of the 2:35 frame, but I contend...

Interesting. Thanks for the response. I was considering the Panasonic CP72, but there seems to be more to the JVC at a better price.

Aspect Ratio Control on DVD players

Is there a difference between scaling and zooming? I note that the Panasonic CP72 offers "4:3 TV Zoom" whereas the JVC XV-SA600 offers 13 step zoom. Is this referred to as "scaling" also?

    coax, optical, both?

I would opt for both types of outputs, as long as all the other features I wanted were included in the DVD player. I have been shopping for DVD players, and it seems most have optical only. This leaves me in a minor dilemma, since I have filled up the two back panel optical inputs on my...

    IR Sensor

Xantech makes a lot of IR stuff. The best place I found to purchase Xantech equipment is Worthington Distribution . I bought a Hidden Link Kit from them that includes 4 emitters, one receiver, a connecting block, and power supply for about $60. With this kit, I can set the receiver on top...

Receiver for my Playstation 2...will this work?

Receiver for my Playstation 2...will this work?

I think either one of those will be able to feed your headphone amp from TAPE OUT rca outputs. You should select Dolby Digital STEREO when listening this way. However, there may be stand-alone dolby digital decoders out that may do the same thing without speaker amplification, etc. BTW, I...

After all this time, why can't studios do subtitles right?

I agree! Attack of the Clones was one confusing deal for me! I started the movie with the English 1 subtitles. Then I decided I didn't need them, so I turned the subtitles OFF. When the aliens started speaking, there were no translation subtitles at all! It seems the default sub track is...

Unhappy w/ Onkyo TX-SR600. Need Recommendations for Alternative in this Price Class!

I have the TX-SR600 with Inifinty Entra speakers. I could not be happier with the sound! I typically listen to music at about 65 and movies at about 70. It's my understanding (and experience) that the Onkyo volume control is not linear, but logrithmic. This gives a really great control...

HK 525 & Infinity Entra Point Fives

Here's a link to a review on Cnet.com: Infinity Entra Point Five I can't find the review online that was done by Ken Pohlman in Sound and Vision Magazine a few months ago. I've got the magazine at the house, though. And you're right about the stands vs. floor standing speakers. Good...

HK 525 & Infinity Entra Point Fives

Yes, I use the whole set. The center is good. The sub is VERY good. I don't know how much coloration I get from having the center in an armoire atop my television, but the sound seems just a little "tubby." But I think a lot of it has to do with the armoire. The sub is really impressive...

HK 525 & Infinity Entra Point Fives

I'm using them as my mains and surrounds in a 5.1 setup. It's actually the Entra Point Five HTS kit that has four of the Point Five speakers, a center channel, and a sub. They sound very good with music. I will caution that there is quite a bit of weight to each speaker. I haven't yet...
