Chris, Thanks! I don't get any hiss at all - I can hear a slight buzz with no input signal if I turn the amp up all the way, but it's silent up to uncomfortably loud listening levels. The circuit does have an optional resistor to reduce hiss, but I found that I didn't need it. Nice job on...
Rick, Using a 1uF cap drops the corner frequency to 1.5Hz instead of 15Hz. It's one of the recommended values to use, but generally full-size 1uF film caps are just too large for the tiny cases most people put the CMoys in. -Mike
I've been hanging around over at Headwize and Head-fi recently, and decided to build the "CMoy Pocket Headphone Amp" - except not worry to much about it being pocket-sized. I just finished my first attempt... actually, kind of my 2nd, but my first *completed* one. The first one's got a more...
Do a search over in the DIY forum on here... there are a couple of threads about modding this sub. I believe someone else also replaced the driver and had excellent results. -Mike
Brett, According to SE - at 1,000 hours you just reset the lamp counter and keep going unless the bulb has actually stopped working. Mine made it to around 1600 hours before it got to the point where it wasn't watchable any more... next time around I'll probably replace it a bit sooner (after...
Kevin, I've been using the tubehead (before I tore it apart to start the rebuild) in a processor loop that I added into my preamp. It works great in that capacity. Before I added the processor loop, I had played around with it running after the pre-outs and before the amp... it also worked...
Kevin, Hahahah, sometimes I scare myself when I think of how much time and money I've put into this hobby over the years... but I like it too much to stop. :-) I haven't heard the Behringer gear, but it was on my short list before I decided to build the TLP. I've also heard some good...
Kevin, It's a whole new world of stuff to check out. I spent a couple of months just looking at options, browsing Audiogon for used gear, reading forums, etc. As with anything else in this hobby, there's so much that is subjective, but even a lot of the more far-fetched things are at least...
Kevin, I think that 86db is low for the ASL Waves, but it also depends on your listening volume and the type of music you want to listen to through it. I am *far* from having a great depth of knowledge when it comes to tube gear... but that said, IMHO, I think you would be better off with...
Kevin, The ASL waves are nice, but you need efficient speakers to mate up with the 8w (if I remember right) output. I've been in the same boat as you with this. I've had SS gear for 20 years and recently decided to give tubes a try as well as get into DIY gear. I decided to build and...
Rodney beat me to the post... I was just going to say, check out the Audiosource SW15. Do some searches on it here as well. Someone here went a step beyond the polyfill and upgraded the driver with a Parts Express 15" DVC and had great results, too. -Mike
Alan, Almost as bad... it was a 1981 Oldsmobile Omega. The rear deck was only deep enough for 4x10 speakers, so I built a pair of enclosures for 6x9 speakers and bolted them on top, overhanging the back seat. I don't remember what I had in there for speakers, probably Pyle, as they were...
Alan, It was definitely fun, that's for sure. What a project. Heheheheh. It was my first full car stereo install. I pre-wired everything I could, built amp boards with plug-in connectors, tested it all out in the house with a portable power supply, spent an afternoon installing it... and no...
Alan, I'm the one who mentioned DAK in the Cerwin Vega thread. I bought a few of their products. My first modem was their ADC 1200 baud, I had the BSR EQ-3000 that they sold, the Cerwin Vega SW12B and a few other things. Searching back through Usenet articles on Google Groups provides some...
Cerwin Vega has been around for a *long* time... close to 50 years, I think. They make a lot of pro speakers and sound reinforcement stuff. I usually refer to them as great college party speakers. They play really loud, have tons of bass and are just the thing for a good rowdy party where all...
I have to also chime in here and say that my wife has been incredibly understanding about my HT addiction. She was a bit skeptical at first, but now that she's used to the system, she loves it. She's ben super-tolerant about my upgrading and tweaking and is really excited to plan a dedicated...
You can also try The Container Store (http://www.thecontainerstore.com). They have several types of shelving systems. I bought black wire-rack shelving from them for my HT gear rack.
Another place to try is restaurant supply companies, they stock lots of shelving systems as well.
-Mike
Well, it definitely looks like I was way off in thinking there might be some interest in these. Oh well. To the three people that did reply - I don't think it will make financial sense to do a run of three sets, but I will inquire and get back to you all. -Mike
Bob, Thank you. The person who actually built them for me did a top-notch job... I'm not sure what I was exactly expecting when they finished pieces came in, but I definitely wasn't expecting that they would turn out as nice as they did. I also didn't realize how heavy and solid an 18" bar of...
One of the first things I noticed about my Ref Studio 100s when I set them up is that being so tall but narrow, they're kind of tippy. I've got three cats, two of which are huge, and they've come close to knocking over my previous pair of speakers when jumping off of them (and those were much...
I actually do agree with that, however there is something to consider... If he's looking to upgrade his front speakers and move the CR's to the rear channels, the CRC may not be the best choice for the center. A logical step up in the Boston line would be the VR series for front speakers...
Mike, If you can find one used, the Boston Acoustics VR-12 center is an awesome speaker. I've owned one for several years, and have just recently swapped it to be my rear center surround speaker for no other reason than that I did want three timbre-matched speakers across my front channels...
Jerry, Understood... I merely meant that the dealer might actually be eager to take it back to fill that other order. In any case, $2325 is a good deal for this processor and especially so since you have it in-hand and ready to ship. I've had a Ref50 for a little over a month now and I...
Jerry, You should check with your dealer - he may be happy to take it back if he's got other orders that still haven't been filled. Who knows, it might make a great holiday surprise for the next person on his list to find out that a Ref50 has just come available before Christmas. -Mike
Hmm... so much for the re-coning plan. According to what I was told in E-mail from Paradigm this afternoon, it costs the same as buying new drivers. -Mike
Unfortunately, there's only one "local" dealer - although I'm going to try calling a wider area on Saturday to see what I can find, including Canada. I haven't talked to the person I purchased them from yet, I am actually going to leave him some e-mail now and see where he bought them. -Mike
Brae, Yes, it was Gary. I'm going to check with Canadian dealers and see what I can come up with. It just seems a bit expensive for replacement 8" drivers. I didn't even think to ask Gary if my existing drivers could be re-coned. I will call him back today and ask about that. -Mike
Just spoke with Gary - I decided to call him instead of waiting for E-mail.
He was very helpful - he suggested that I first call my local dealer, which I did, and told me to call back if I didn't get anywhere with that. They were somewhat vague and not very helpful, so I called back. He gave...
Brae, I'm not faulting Paradigm or the original seller. I hold nothing at all against either of them. I honestly do not know if this occured before or after the sale, so it would be grossly unfair of me to put any blame anywhere but on myself. When I say that it sucks, I'm talking about...
