Scott - prior to the Rava I used only large tower speakers, ACI Spirits (aka Opal). They get down to the 30's mid room, but can't really compare at all and sound much less congested with crossover engaged. I also previously used a NHT 10" sub, not sure the model, but it has an outboard...
I have lived with an Adire Audio Rava ( http://www.adireaudio.com/TextPages/...eFrameText.htm ), first in a large apartment for 3 months, now in a small living room in a new home for 1 month. In the apartment, I had the Rava crossed over @ 50hz, 3rd order high and low pass (using a paradigm x-30...
Martin, those are indeed the best Canadian DIY suppliers. The thing is, I don't think there are many 'premade' kits that can compete with a Servo 15. Most at those sites are aimed at the mid-budget sub market. You may need to get a custom solution using say, two tempests vented, a vented tumult...

if you aren't interested in a DIY or a kit, and insist that the sub be canadian made, then the paradigm is going to be hard to beat. You can beat it @ the price by DIYing, and possibly with the larger HSU which is now available in Canada from Canadian dealers.

depends on whether your goal is lowest possible response or higher output. But it is not as critical as with a vented sub, because the driver is not becoming 'unloaded' below the tuning frequency of the vent. However you will have better power handling & max output if you filter out say...

In terms of clean, low bass the Dayton will eat the Logitech for lunch. One thing to realize though is that after becoming used to somewhat boomy, distorted bass, 'clean' bass does not always sound as good as you'd expect it. Certain types of distortion can be pleasant to the ear, giving the...

Tom and Ron - you may find it useful to contact John Meyer of Newform Research. His company once had a similar problem with one dedicated individual trashing them all over the forums, news groups, and pulling down the Audioreview rating under various names. I believe they filed a suit against...

Re: the pop psychology analysis of the British/Australian/Japanese sound... to quote the great Hugh Laurie: What absolute twaddle! ;) As other posters mentioned, the difference has everything to do with differences in average room size, construction materials, and listening difference. There...
The 811s has a nice preamp section for a lower-priced reciever, its major weakness is the amps. If you can take them out of the picture, or significantly reduce the load on them, I wouldnt be surprised if it can match more expensive gear like the Outlaw. After all, I always thought the Outlaw's...
That is very interesting Chad, I have a Pioneer 811s as my main reciever, and also found that adding an outboard amp (in my case, an old Carver reciever) for the front speakers opened up the dynamics quite a bit. In fact, I bought the reciever mainly for its preamp section, knowing I would not...
Hey Perry - just wondering if you ever got your replacement from Adire, how long it took, did they send a new unit or repair the old one? I'm still waiting myself so am just wondering how someone else made out.
For other companies that provide great bang/buck, Adire is great, as is ACI, as is Servodrive, as is AcousticVisions, as are the various kits offered by Dayton, Creativesound, Madisound, and the like. Velodyne and Paradigm make nice subs off the top of my head, but IMO they can't match the...
I think what you need is this: http://www.behringer.com/DCX2496/index.cfm?lang=ENG I will do auto-EQ and I beleive you can manually tweak the curves as well.
Check out www.creativesound.ca for some 'kit' and retail subs sold in Canada that compare favourably to the Paradigm line. For example, at the $530 pricepoint there is no Paradigm sub I know of that will compare with the Adire Rava they sell. You might try their new 'tube' sub kit as well.
I believe in a sealed sub, the 'tuning point' is generally considered the point at which the sub's output is 3db down anechoically, called the F3. Perhaps someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong. In a vented sub, the tuning point is the frequency the port is tuned to. At this frequency...
Yeah I just saw that, looks awesome, especially for those of us who are woodworking incompetent, or live in apartments and can't make lots of sawdust ;) Depending on how I like my Rava, I may eventually pull the driver and amp and stick them in one of these tubes.
I just want to chime in as well here and agree with Brian - ACI offers great products and did the groundwork for today's crop of consumer direct companies. I built a pair of Opals from a kit about 6 years back, and still enjoy them every day of the week. I've taken them into local audio shops...
:D I had the same situation. All the people who asked why I'd mailorder a speaker without hearing it piled on their "I told you so". Some in a particularly ignorant mood commented "They probably make this stuff in China" :rolleyes:Then of course the one guy who already owns a little Paradigm...
perry - I think the double boxing is used only on finished speakers, to protect the finish and due to the weight. The Rava boxed was ~ 70lbs, and quite large. I have ordered raw 12" drivers from Stryke before, and they arrived single boxed and in working order. I think this is more likely a 'bad...
Lew is correct, and yes its normal. Most AV recievers use 1st or 2nd order filters on the sub/mains. This means that the mains are either 6db or 12db down an octave below the crossover point (1st order & 2nd order respectively), while the sub is 6 or 12 db down an octave above the crossover...
