    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I agree, Anthem continues to do an outstanding job. They promised support and upgrades when the AVM20 was introduced. They have met and exceeded my expectations. Happy 4th & Canada Day (July 1st)

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Well it looks like it may be time to dust of this venerable old thread. Anthem is now beta testing Pro logic IIx for the AVM 20, seemingly the perpetual pre/pro. I have decided not to take part in this testing as it is a bit of a hassle for me to install these upgrades. I do look forward to...

Anthem MCA 30 vs Adcom GFA 5503

I have owned the early version of the MCA series, the MCA-5, since June 2000. This amp powers the 100's, a CC and 20's, all v2. I have operated it daily since that time. I don't turn on the TV without the rest of the system. I listen to music at least 5 times per week at realistic levels and...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I am with Evan and Marc. Over three years with the AVM-20 and no desire to change or upgrade. This unit does everything I would ask of a pre/pro and does it well. There is also the upgrades on the near horizon which I can choose to install as my needs change in the future. I still look on my...

    Classic music on DVD-A

I would recommend the AIX recording of the Brandenburg Concerto No.s 3&5/Air. I have a few other classical music DVD-A's, but this is the best sounding and most engaging by far. It seems great care was taken with the recording, being a true 96kHz/24 bit recording start to finnish. Further there...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

The inability to tweak each source component is not a major concern to me. With the memory settings on the display device and the flexibility with the AVM-20 to keep my current analog connection while adding the HDMI connection I do not anticipate a degradation of PQ from any source. In the...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

More companies should support their products and customers like Anthem. Although there has been delays they do follow through on their promises. I am glad I kept my 20 and look forward to upgrading in the spring/summer of '05. Video transcoding, 4 HDMI inputs and two IEEE 1394 inputs wow...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Good question Jason GT. I have often wondered the same thing. Although I am happy with the CD & DVD-A (the former via coax & the latter analog of course but with digital conversion at the AVM-20) sound of my Panny DVD-7A it is now many model years behind in technology. It is built like a...

    Sirius, the default provider?

Although the Canadian market is very small in comparison to the US, I wonder if there will be any impact resulting from the CBC joining forces with Sirius this fall. There are no plans to bring XM to Canada that I have heard of. Canadians will have to choose Sirius or continue with the current...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Frank joe, do other source components produce this pop? Was there an event, such as a power surge/interuption etc. that may be associated with this recent pop noise? Have you checked the cables and ruled out static electricity? What have you set your display brightness levels at? Sorry for...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Sorry to hear of your problem Michael. Anthem would not have been able to respond to your e-mail as it was Thanksgiving up here in Canada today. No doubt they will get back to you as soon as possible. On the bright side maybe you can enquire about the up-coming hardware upgrade. If your unit...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I finally got around to loading 2.15 last week and it went smooth as silk. In addition to correcting the minor "pop" when it sensed a DD 5.1 signal for the first time each session, it has also corrected a bass management problem that had me stumped. Prior to 2.15, when listening to DVD-A the...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I could not imagine replacing my AVM-20 either. If I suddenly came into some disposable money I might look at the D-1 or something, but at this point I remain very happy with the 20. It does everything I want in a SSP and does it very well. I am sure there are products with greater sonic...

Anthem AVM 20 - Grey Screen problem

You may want to check your connections. Perhaps a cable was loosened when you installed the new amp. I had a similar problem with a SVHS cable and the picture suddenly going black and white. Pushing the cable in tightly corrected the problem.

    Thinking about an Anthem?

Frank, from reading your posts it seems your AVM 20 now sits in the box unused. Why not hook it up and determine if it is functioning properly or not? Even if you intend on selling it you should be able to advise a potential buyer if the unit operates as intended. It is my impression your...

It has finally come down to these Pre/Pros?

Ted, I cannot comment on the pre/pros in your list as it has been two years since I did my research. I just want to comment on your perception that the AVM-20 is "buggy". As a long time owner of this unit I would argue nothing could be further from the truth. The upgrade thread reflects a...

Directors Which is more important to you: video or audio?

For me it's the audio. My next upgrade will be on the video side as my audio goals have been met. In the interim, even though I am only using a 35" older Panny (Gao), I am easily drawn into a movie where the sound is compelling. I have been to friends homes where large rptv's show great...

What to look out for after rear-ending accident? (ie whiplash)

BC is still a tort province vs the various no-fault schemes in many other provinces, however the Insurance Corp of British Columbia (the only PL/PD writer in BC)is a provincial government owned insurance company. The typical symptoms can include stiffness and pain in the neck and/or shoulders...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Has any one loaded the AVM 20 v2.11f(9Oct03)yet? I am still waiting to get my hands on a laptop. I notice the attached document refers to some functions for the Statement D1. It would seem the AVM 20 and the Statement may share some software. Wayne P

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I received an email from Nick Friday night which included a new version, v2.11e(3Oct03). I haven't even had a chance to try v2.11d yet. :) The guys at Anthem sure do take this stuff seriously, based on how much time they spend on a minor "popping" sound. I remain impressed with this company...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I just recieved an e-mail from Nick at Anthem which included v2.11d(Oct.1/03). This is to fix the "pop" in the left surround when detecting a 5.1 signal. There is also a list of other fixes with the file. I have not been able to try it yet as I have to borrow a laptop. Nick stated that...

What are YOUR favorite DVD-A discs?

Natalie Merchant "Tigerlily" is the DVD-A I listen to most often. Firstly the writing is very good, both lyrically and musically. I also enjoy the way the 5.1 channels are used to spread out the sonic presentation in a reasonable fashion IMHO. The only negative with this disc is that it is very...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

After a few weeks with v2.10 I am now convinced the upgrade did improve the sound of my AVM-20. I find the improvement is most noticeable on classical music, but it is also apparent on other types. I find bass tighter and the midrange more coherent. It is as if the rhythm or pace is more...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Levesque, I also use the trigger for my MCA-5 amp and there has always been a mild pop when powering up. It occurs in all speakers as the amp turns on. This has happened since I installed my AVM-20 two years ago and I consider it to be normal. My default volume setting on power up is -35dB so...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Well, I spent all night listening to my limited DVD-A collection ( Hotel California, Tigerlily, Rumours, Harvest, Brain Salad Surgery and Beethoven # 4&5 )in Anlg-DSP and could not reproduce the noise in the left surround. I tried switching the L & R surrounds first then switched back and still...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I must agree with Marc. This pop is a minor problem. I am confident it will be corrected soon. In the interim it is easily managed. Regarding the noise in the left surround on DVD-A, analog-digital. I will swap the left & right surround inputs tonight to isolate the problem to my player or...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

Thanks for sending your settings John. Did you experience the noise in your left surround? Did it happen only when your AVM-20 first received a 5.1 input? Do you hear an occasional and seemingly random noise (much quieter then the 5.1 pop) in the left surround with DVD-A? Wayne P

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

As usual I have received a prompt response from Nick at Anthem. I am surprised to learn I am the first to report this "pop" in the left surround. I have described the problem as I am experiencing it. He seems confident they can correct it. He has requested that someone who is...

    The Upgraded Anthem AVM-20 2.1

I am not discouraged. The "pop" is a one time per session event and can be easily managed as it is predictable. I am a little more concerned about the left surround shhh sound which is random and may or may not occur in a given listening session. I fully expect both are correctable with software...
