Thanks for the replies, Wayne and Selden. It did seem like there was some risk with simply running concurrent speaker wires from each of the two receivers to one pair of speakers. Not that I would have both receivers powered up at the same time (on purpose!) ...Tim
I'm maybe getting to the point of starting to understand and be curious enough about going to the next levels to be getting a little dangerous to my gear. I have a mellow Onkyo receiver that I prefer for simple 2 channel music over my HT receiver. I have some vintage speakers that I love for...
Mainly a bump but generally interested in any damage that could occur to my receiver by hooking up these old speakers about which the specs are unknown. Thanks.
Speaking of Wharfedales. I recently discovered a pair of Wharfedale model W60E's "Achromatic" at an estate sale that appear to be in excellent shape with the exception of an inch of dust on top. Big 3-ways that must weigh at least 30 lbs each; nice wood veneer. General design appears to be from...
My center is about 8" above my screen; just happened to work out that way with ent. center. Mains are ~24" below the center but sound fine. I like it (sound-wise and looks-wise) better than when the mains were at the same height as the center.
I think I've seen this mentioned but I'll second it. Introduce yourself to all of the neighbors, tell them you're passionate about HT and ask them to let you know if it's too loud. Puts the ball in their court and you'll find one or two who want to learn more about it. Good luck! :D
I go for ear level during viewing/listening. You can build your own but they need to be solid. You can get many ideas by looking at what's being offered in the marketplace. ...Tim
Glenn: I had the same situation. Some extra vent holes neatly added from top to bottom along the back wall of the ent. center improved the cooling significantly by letting the heat escape without dowgrading the looks of the setup. ...Tim
Thanks, Bill. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I spent a lot of time trying to find such a consoldiated thread on HTF but was not successful.
Best. ;)
Anybody know if there's a central thread or FAQ link to discuss calibration disc issues like Avia, Sound&Vision, and VE? My searches bring up lots of either very general information about the value of calibration discs or else very disbursed micro-level issues. In short, is anyone aware of a...
I live in the country on five acres and my nearest neighbor is ~1000 ft away. Still, I knew he was an audiophile and into HT in a big way with access to top-line components through his job at an audio store. And, even at the distance, I could hear the thump and rumble of his setup. Which did...
Hi. I'm running digital coax audio from my dvd to my receiver. Out of curiosity, what would happen if I 'also' connected the analog audio cables from the dvd to the receiver? Does one automatically override the other?
Justin: You might try going to the BestBuy or CircuitCity web sites and comparing what you saw with what is there. Sears.com might have the system you saw online, too. Then compare all of the specs. That will give you a starting point. Be sure and come back here if you have any questions. $365C...
I watched Behind Enemy Lines a few nights ago with a friend and his family who have the Onkyo 650 $500 set-up (plus a $150 dvd player). They (we all) had the time of their lives! It wouldn't have made one bit of difference to them if I had told them they could have had an even higher level of...
Great stories! I had a neighbor tell some of the other neighbors she thought I was violating the zoning code because she thought I had some sort of industrial machinery operating in my house. What has worked for me now is to tell the neighbors up front that I'm really into home theater and...
Great story! My first "HT" was two 6" rear speakers from an old car that I soldered to the terminals on a b&w tv that I bought for $2 (an "investment" to a 10 yr old boy in 1964.) I ran 15' of 22 gauge off to each side of the tv. The only way you could hear the sound was to get down on hands and...
Thanks for your comments, Dustin; I agree with you. I know my view is in the minority. What I've done with some of the folks I know is get them into a good quality set-up at a price they are comfortable with. No junk; never. But something that will give them good exposure to what HT has to...
One other consideration: Regardless of whatever you buy, pick up a roll of good quality (not "most expensive") speaker wire of no smaller than 16 gauge (the bigger the number the smaller the wire) to replace any smaller speaker wire that comes with your system.
Your first upgrade! ;)
I think some of the perception or confusion about HTIB comes from exactly what the person means by it. There are ultra-cheapy HTIB systems for $99 that include a 5 disc dvd player. Then there are nice packages with only the receiver, center, front, surround, and subwoofer that offer excellent...
Hi. Any advice on how to make 12 or 14g bare wire fit into a spring clip terminal? I pulled about 1/2" insulation off the wire and twist it tight but it seems to have difficulty going in the clip hole and the tight twist becomes a mini- brillo pad ; ) I notice some wires have a solder coating...

Thanks, Dave. I've had a hunch it might be the dvd. Reason is I don't remember it being that way for the first few dvd's I played but then it tilted (barely). I'll research your suggestion, also. Is the adjustment standard on a dvd player?
Hi. Newbie here learning a lot. Question: When I watch a movie on my new Sony (don't have the model number handy) dvd player in wide-screen (black bars on top and bottom of picture; I'm pushing my technical langauge skills now ) it seem the picture is a little skewed on the monitor (32" Toshiba...
