    MiniDV quality compared to Digital8?

I think, Digital8 is mostly for people already owning a bunch of Hi-8 tapes, and who want to be able to use a new camcorder to play them. So, it's a backward compatibility issue for most. Eventually, Hi8 tapes should be retired and replaced completely. Looking forward, MiniDV should be your...

    Pioneer encouraging casual pirating?!?

That's what we need, users confusing and scaring manufacturers! Isn't there the whole music industry lobby for it?

Mode question for Pioneer PRO520HD owners

I've read the manual, but I'm still not clear which mode is intended for viewing widescreen dvd movies. There are Natural Wide, Cinema Wide, Zoom and Full to choose from. I'm more comfortable with Natural Wide, but the manual seems to point to either Cinema, Zoom or Full, depending on what the...

Help me buy a good high quality DVD player!!!

I think Panasonics are considered the most versatile (RP-56's chip is rated very well in the price range). The Toshiba has been in the business the longest and are well regarded too. I personally just got a Sony NS900V and love it so far.

Multichannel SACD connection to reciever Q

I got it at J&R for $550, waited for almost a month (they were out of stock). As for the noise, apparently it was caused by connecting to the 'phono' input. When I used analog 'CD' of my reciever, it was fine. Any ideas? Btw, it was explained to me at the last HT show, that DVD-A may be played...

Multichannel SACD connection to reciever Q

Just got a Sony NS900V and so far I'm impressed. However, I didn't realize I needed a 5.1 input on my reciever to listen to sample multichannel SACDs. For some reason I thought it would work through a digital (coax or optical) connection. I guess I'm stuck with 2ch (which was very noisy at...

    End of the DVD?

Optical storage device have been around for a while. There are a few companies with different implementations competing for market share. I don't think DVD is in any danger in the next 10 years though. Why would Hollywood be interested in a technology allowing you to store 3-10 dig. movies on a...

DVD authoring contributes to chroma bug

The point still stands. If they encoded chroma info in at least 4:2:2, not only the bug would go away, the colors would be displayed more accurately (much less and simpler interpolation).

DVD authoring contributes to chroma bug

Wouldn't the problem go away if video frames where stored in a progressive 4:2:2 format on a disc? Or am I misunderstanding the issue?

HI DEF: Any other satellite users choose "cheaper" digital cable for HD feeds?

Question to TWC HD customers: Does HD cable converter have a component output? What was the resolution on the HD channels (1080i/720p)? thanks. (TW promises to roll out HD in NY area by the end of the year, can't wait)

How much did you pay for your DVP-NS900V?

J&R sells it for $550, it's an authorized dealer.

Ready to buy a new reciever, but from where?

If I can't get it from authorized dealer for within 20-25% more than reputable online place, I go with online. The rational is - new equipment is highly unlikely to break within manufacturer's warranty period. Of course, you limit your exchange/return options.

How often do you buy new amps?

Scott, I completely agree. I always find myself "holding off a little". For format wars to end, for new formats to establish and bugs to be worked out, and so on. The separates could be an answer, but quality pre-amps/DSP's cost almost as much as many decent integrated recievers. I also wonder...

    Serious problem Dolby EX

It's probably too late to ask, but I've had the same problem (audio drop outs) with my Pioneer Elite amp connected Apex600A DVD player. I always assumed it was the player's problem, since it was working fine with other sources (players or DD movies on digital cable). Is this related to amp's...

How often do you buy new amps?

Just wanted to know others' experience. I'm talking about the integrated amplifiers. The changes in sound formats/features have been quite frequent in the last few years and you can just see more coming. (mine is 5 years old)

DVD-A disc in non-DVD-A (regular) player

I heard at an HE show that a player lacking DVD-Audo capabilities would play a multichanel-coded DVD-A disc in Dolby Digital 5.1 format. Does anyone know if this is correct? Anyone tried it? thanks.
