I think Panasonics are considered the most versatile (RP-56's chip is rated very well in the price range). The Toshiba has been in the business the longest and are well regarded too. I personally just got a Sony NS900V and love it so far.

The point still stands. If they encoded chroma info in at least 4:2:2, not only the bug would go away, the colors would be displayed more accurately (much less and simpler interpolation).

Wouldn't the problem go away if video frames where stored in a progressive 4:2:2 format on a disc? Or am I misunderstanding the issue?

If I can't get it from authorized dealer for within 20-25% more than reputable online place, I go with online. The rational is - new equipment is highly unlikely to break within manufacturer's warranty period. Of course, you limit your exchange/return options.

I heard at an HE show that a player lacking DVD-Audo capabilities would play a multichanel-coded DVD-A disc in Dolby Digital 5.1 format. Does anyone know if this is correct? Anyone tried it? thanks.
