Need Advice for new Digital Camera

Thanks everyone for the advice, and the education on low light photography. Looks like I wont be getting a Digital SLR camera anytime soon, so its down to the point and shoot mainstream. Definatly going to go with something from the 5-7 megapixel range. My main concern is top notch image...

Need Advice for new Digital Camera

Wow, been forever since I posted, but I had this question and there's no better place for advice then the HTF. Anyhow, I'm looking for a new digital camera, having not bought one since 1998 I need education, bad... What I'm looking for is as many megapixels as I can afford (few hundred...

Will one more layer of sheetrock really help?

To clarify, I own the unit. I say apartment, but it's really a condominium. Everything I'm considering doing is acceptable in my building as long as I don't pass my borders (i.e. start modifying things beyond my walls going into my neighbor's unit).

Will one more layer of sheetrock really help?

Two quick questions... First the situation is I'm moving my room and all my HT components from the 2nd bedroom of my apartment to the larger first bedroom. Nice thing about my little 2nd room was it wasn't bordering any other units, but the new room is. By code my apartment and the one next...

    HD DVDs?

It was mastered in 1080p and done as a hi-def telicine transfer, but it is still DVD quality which is 480i. No DVD can hold HD video unless it was really short, like say just under an hour max. HD is more than 4 times the data for the video. What you're thinking of is the DVD-ROM feature...

    HD DVDs?

I've heard the possibility that when HD-DVD does come into play, the first discs will be double sided. One side the HD-DVD version for the new players, and the other side regular DVD for the current players today. I heard this some time ago, but sounds like a good plan to me. Only thing you...

    Calibration Question on Sony KP46WT510

That's a relief. The 45A is their Elite series, so I would expect it to be able to handle everything it says it does with exceptional quality. I did a test yesterday on which does better Progressive/3:2 pulldown. Conclusion is it is the Pioneer Elite, and I'd rather make it progressive...

    Calibration Question on Sony KP46WT510

Jeremy, So far so good, except trying to get all the levels right. I got some calibration settings from another HTF'er and it has improved the picture. The gamecube is my girlfriend's brother's and we used it a few nights ago, and it looked ok, but could have looked better I thought, but...

    Calibration Question on Sony KP46WT510

I have recently got this set and am still learning about it. My question is, I tried calibrating it with THX Optimizer (I still need an Avia disc, I know, but I'm really short on any cash after the holidays), but the settings still don't look right too me. DVDs look a little fuzzy, and...

    Can Lights

Thanks Chip for the info. Halo by Cooper Lighting has been what I have looked at, but I was not sure if they accept the bulbs I have a plentiful amount of or not. This is going to be putting four can lights in a finished room, which mean I need to also purchase a 5" hole saw, some electrical...

    Can Lights

Quick question. I'm planning to run 4 can lights in my room with a Lutron remote dimmer. This is to replace a Leviton slider dimmer and one incandescant wall sconce that is putting out nasty light in my room. This will also eliminate the need to use floor lamps, thus freeing floor space, etc...

DTS Neo 6 vs. Dolby Pro Logic II (CONSOLIDATED THREAD)

I prefer DPL2 for just about everything cause just about everything is made for Pro Logic, and lots of newer programs and games made for Pro Logic 2. Trying to upgrade a 2 channel source to 6.1 seems like overkill to me. 5 or 5.1 is really enough. If I want all my speakers playing at once...

    5.1 and 7.1 dilemma

I agree, wire for 7.1 Who knows what the future will hold. If there will be a discrete 7.1 system in the future you'll be ready for it.

    THX certification important?

Basically THX is a minimal set of standards for all areas of your receiver. Most, if not all good receivers out there should meet and exceed these minimum standards in almost all those areas. THX was big back in the 80's when it came out, and in the 90s too. It brought attention to the fact...

Buying a new HDTV, many questions!

Lots of good questions, and lots of comparisons to make, so I'll touch on some of it. First, that older Toshiba 40" RPTV. If it isn't HD or even SD (Standard Definition) than It's going to play interlaced only, which on big screen don't look very good on lower resolutions like 480 lines. Scan...

    Center Channel on 42H82

The Sony I'm considering also has the same problem. About all you can do to solve it is either have a small stand for your center channel in front close to the floor, or at least under the screen, which is almost always not practical. Or build some kind of rig for the center to sit on...

    Do I really need DTS???

DTS to me is kind of a placebo of sound. It has allocated bitrates of 768kbps or 1.5mbps, vs Dolby Digital's 384kbps, and focuses more on the frequencies we're more sensitive to. This in itself clicks in many people's heads as meaning that DTS must be better. If people think its better just by...

    Panasonic PT-53WX53 questions and alternatives

Thanks for the recomendation, I'm leaning towards the Sony anyhow, but its nice to hear what others have done in comparing these 3 models. I'm still looking for any other opinions so please post away, a new TV is always a big step ;) BTW, Chris, does that stand, if you bought one, have enough...

    Panasonic PT-53WX53 questions and alternatives

Thanks Jack, ang Gregg for the insight. Naturally paying that much for the real deal is not possible, soI'll go for the best thing I can find in my price range. I'm deciding I need to go with a 46" model anyhow cause 53" will be too big for my space. After looking through the Panasonic...

    Panasonic PT-53WX53 questions and alternatives

I've been spending a little time looking through other models and doing some research while waiting for the turkey to burn... I mean cook, and found a few other things: I like the Pioneer Elite RPTVs, although they are close to going extinct forever. The PRO-530HD and PRO-530HDi (what's the...

    Panasonic PT-53WX53 questions and alternatives

Its been a while since I have been active in this forum, but HDTV, which I have held off on for some time, is catching my eye. Currently on my setup I'm using a Panasonic 32" Superflat TV. I was looking at the Panasonic PT-53WX53, and it has a very nice image from my initial viewing, but a...

I'm REALLY finished with public theaters

Last month when I saw Hulk the sound would cut out, it literally sounded like all speakers would cut out except either the center or right main, and it sounded like it had no tone, as if I too had cotton stuffed in my ears. This happened at least a dozen times and would last for as long as 10...

    Definition of 5:3:2 or 2:3:5

Yea, its definatly not AR, which I'm well educated on. Probably is the "Golden Ratio" Bob mentioned. I heard this ratio used in the HT Constructions and Interiors Section a while back.

    Definition of 5:3:2 or 2:3:5

I've heard these ratios used before but can't 100% interprut what they mean. I think it has to do with room size, in which the 5:3:2 is LxWxH of the room. Seems right to say for example a room with a 10ft cieling would be 15 feet wide and 25ft long by this ideal. Am I correct or way off?

*** Official "TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES" Review Thread

I saw T3 on opening day with a mixture of high and low expectations. Low because James Cameron did not write or direct this one, and cause of the first trailer. The next Domestic trailer that premeired before Matrix Reloaded gave me high expectations cause it had an emotional edge to it, but I...

What is the best DVD audio and video test/calibration disc?? How much does it cost??

I second what Jeff said. I tried calibrating using THX, but their test tones are as much as 10dB off from what they say they are, and all they are are tests, not calibration software. Go with one of the other mentioned discs to get the best result. Use the THX ones to make sure your speakers...

help ! design my theater- experts needed!

It'd be helpful to post a floorplan of your current propsed theater area, that way the ideas can start coming one after the other. If you can't post a floorplan online right now, but still have one you can e-mail it to me, I'm more than willing help out. Besides, I like gathering ideas and...

    Yamaha Recievers and Cinema DSP

DSPs, recreate different sound fields, like a low cieling and brick wall in a jazz club, which is a common one. Most newer Yamahas have more, and they are made to recreate specific Venues, like the Roxy Theatere, or Anaheim Stadium. I used to own a Yamah RX-V995, using ENHANCED Dolby Digital...

    Need some suggestions for condo

Make sure the cielings are acoustical tiles which will block out most of the noise, and the subfloor will take out most of the rest. Only other option there is to try to stuff some insulation up there, but being a condo it might not be possible. Last resort would be building another floating...
