I went through the same issues. Got a 27" flat AKAI/Samsung at Sams but after having trouble with 2 of them my wife (bless her heart) said "Maybe we can go bigger". So we looked at the JVC 32260. Brought it home and am quite happy with it. It's in the same place and frankly I don't see any more...
Not sure but I had 2 AKAI/Samsungs from Sam's and ended up getting a JVC cause I got tired of boxing up tvs. When they worked correctly the AKAI 2790s I got were amazing. But both only lasted 2 weeks before problems showed up. Yes I was VERY disappointed. I really thought quality would be on a...
You had the same problem with your 2790 I had with my second one. The first one went back because the picture did weird things and the tech said they wanted to take in for 2 weeks and "throw parts at it to see what's wrong". WRONG not on a 2 week old set. The 2nd was GREAT picture but than the...
FWIW the JVC 32260 I have can do it through service mode. However after doing it and watching some enhanced widescreen dvds in this mode I did not see enough reason (if any) to bother. Yes some very slight improvement but you have to be on top of the set and looking at details rather than...
The JVC can but you have to do it in Service menu and I forgot how. Did it once on my 32260 and if you get right up on it and squint just right it is a little better, but not worth the setup trouble. If you have a good quality unit with high quality component input and cables it makes more...
I just went through same thing. Eneded up with JVC 32260 from Sam's and don't really miss the 27 flat. The extra real estate is welcome more than the flat screen.
Check aan AKAI at Sam's Club. Top notch picture quality rock bottom price. Look for threads on this product. There is very good advice on how to calibrate it etc. After calibration it's a suprisingly good set. Only $379 for the new 2791.
IF you have a Sam's nearby check out the JVC 36260. Very similar to the one you've looked at and priced at $699 I believe. Has Dual Tuner PIP, can do squeeze (through serv. mode) etc. I got the 32" version of this and am quite happy with it.
You can get the AKAI 2790 for 350 or the 2791 for 379. In either case you can get an extra warranty for 1 or 3 yr and still be money ahead of anything else. They're very nice products. I had problems with the 2 I had but I suspect the issues with the first one were not that bad. I still think...
I looked at the Samsung but didn't like it for one reason. The curvature of the screen was so overly exagerrated for a 36" set. I still have the 32" JVC and after calibration am very pleased with the picture quality (someone mentioned graininess) not sure where this came from. I've looked at...
The set I saw was labeled as a TXM2792 however it appeared to be a TXM2790. I believe it was mislabeled. Meantime I was at Sam's and they have the AKAI 2791 (equivalent to the Samsung 2792) for $379. American is also selling the 36" Samsung (regular tube) with dual tuner pip and bells and...
Sorry.....Can't see much if any difference using squeeze mode on either set. I think I see a tiny bit more sharpness in "squeeze" but honestly if you blindfolded me and put in a DVD and didn't tell me what mode the set was in I don't think I could tell.
Overall I'm mostly happy with the JVC...
Not sure....I have a Samsung 1491 (little bro to the 2791) and it's a very nice set, I also use a Samsung 19" flat screen monitor and it's great. Not sure why the 2 27"sets were bad but I got gun shy after boxing and carrying 2 100+ lb sets in and out of Sam's. FWIW I've tried the "squeeze on...
IF you have a Sam's Club nearby check the JVC 32260. $469 at Sam's. The clone of the Samsung 2791 (AKAI 2790) is there also for $349 but I had 2 in my home both exhibited problems for me the first one had an annoying "flashing" I could not get rid of and turned some stuff purple. Repair guy...
Well the 2nd AKAI went back to Sam's and I gave up :frowning: It seems there are some SERIOUS quality issues here and I was getting tired of boxing and carting 100lb tv sets. Got a JVC 32260. Not sure how I'll like it (I think I liked the picture better on the AKAIs) but this doesn't flash, the...
This AKAI is in the same position my old Sanyo had been in for over 9 years without a hitch. There isn't anything nearby it either. So I think there may be a different product in my future. I'm a little leary of long term reliabilty issues here. Kind of reminds me of the 2 sets I had tried...
Never did so I went to Sam's and exchanged the set with a new one. This one exhibits little or none of the "flash" in the opening of Harry Potter, but it still turns everything on Fox purple :frowning: . Addtionally the new one has awful sound buzzy and distorted :frowning: . I'm VERY...
I recently noticed something strange with mine....I have done all the "fixes" noted in other threads and get a very good picture except on my local "fox" channel. I have 3 sets this AKAI/Samsung, a Samsung 1491, and an older Sanyo. The AKAI will turn everything on fox purple. At first I thought...

I just downloaded the brochure and it matches exactly to the Akai I just bought. Every feature and spec is the same. Even the cabinet is the same except for color. $349 st Sam's makes me feel better every day ;)

I had actually called the AKAI distributer and talked with their tech rep. He told me there was no difference between the akai 2790 or 2791. Mostly marketing as they will be soon distributing the product through other sources as Best Buy, etc. besides just Sam's. I picked up the 2790 at...

If you look at the AKAI clone at Sam's you'll be suprised it's exact specs as the 2791. I bought one for $349, and so far so good. It does push red but my bro came out with a DVD he uses (he's a HT professional) and calibrated for me. He was going on how I got a "communist set" but he...
