And are we sure this a new 4K transfer done by Lowry ?
I can't find any evidence of these...
1.66 was a very popular aspect ratio in France. A lot of filmalkers here in france chose this format during the 70-80 (Claude Sautet, Yves Robert, Philippe de broca). Rare were the films in France shot with the 1.85 aspect ratio during that period.
it's also true for the 1.33 frame. the top and the bottom have also empty space. They way these Columbo episodes are filmed reminded me this drawing made by Kubrick for his dp on The Shining and the result with the two different aspect ratios of the film. Some people prefer the 1.33...
it was shot like a movie, with 1.85 soft matte. both for a 1.33 composition and a 1.85 composition. I prefer the 1.85 aspect ratio but both are legimate since it was broadcasted in 1.33 in the first place.
from the episode "caution, murder can be hazardous to your health", made in 1991. the 4X3 picture is from the region 2 dvd, the 16X9 picture is from the region 1.
