Sorry for the delayed response to your previous post Mark. Given the R2 (which uses the same anamorphic PAL transfer) can be had for under $US13 from CD-Wow.net (and less if you can find a coupon), you may as well (if of course you can put up with the apparent PAL speed-up, which doesn't really...
This is starting to get rather annoying...
(Still, provided Amazon keeps my order open, I'll be happy when - or should that be if - I get the DVD)
Just sold my R1 on eBay for $A51 ($US38-ish) so I'll get a free upgrade on this title. I can't wait for this and Das Boot: Das Bootiest Edition coming out within a week of each other in R2. :D
After an initial burst of enthusiasm, my interest has cooled because I can't do decent bass management on SACDs on my 655A (45A) without spending $$$ and because DVD-A has released precisely two titles in the last 6 months I have been interested in buying. Unlike many folks here who only want...
Pioneer has not made switching between stereo and M/C areas of SACDs and the CD layer easy. To change between them, if the 563A is anything like the 45A, you'll need to go into 'setup', then 'initial settings', then 'options', then 'SACD playback'
It's due on DVD-A on 3 February. Advanced Resolution Surround Sound (96kHz/24-bit) DVD-Audio Players Advanced Resolution Stereo (96kHz/24-bit) DVD-Audio Players Dolby Digital Surround Sound DVD-Video Players Videos: Live performance videos from 1976: "Baby I Love Your Way", "Show Me...
I'm eagerly awaiting being able to play the SACD layer of this (alas I am in a different state from my SACD player :frowning:). I got it for a Chrissie present. The CD layer is pretty good (subject to CD's limitations) and I will watch the DVD this week too.
I demoed PSB Alpha Ts, Mordaunt Shorts and Wharfedale Diamond 8.4s when I was looking at speakers recently. I ended up going for the PSBs because they were a lot more detailed and refined than the rather bland and muddy Wharfedales. It also helped that I had recently picked up an Alpha Center...
It's got a whole lot of eastern European subbies on it, which is usually a good sign... (I got it from Target last week but am yet to crack the shrink wrap.)
Flagged means that if your receiver is capable of kicking in ES or EX processing, it will do so if you have set the receiver up appropriately. It will also let you know if you can use EX or ES processing if you don't have it switched on. Unflagged discs need to have ES processing manually...
Sigh... Now the US has to put up with the same crap the rest of us have been annoyed by. I hope it will generate a few lawsuits and finally cause this crap to end (and compel the record companies to add value by giving us properly copy protected hi-res SACDs and DVD-As, rather than...
In answer to your questions: 1) Yes 2) Me and quite a few others (the Pioneer 563 has lowered significantly the main barrier to entry of the SACD club, price, to c. $US179). 3) DTS CDs sound pretty good but can't offer the sound quality or flexibility of hybrid SACDs, being compressed...
If you've got PAL playback capability and can't wait for a new version, the R4 versions are anamorphic. I picked up the double pack in Target a couple of months ago for $A22 ($US14). However, they are only available separately for a reasonable price at the moment.
New Favorite for me - simply put, it's stunningly well recorded (I was listening to the stereo track on a $A115k system consisting of two Halcro DM68 monoblocs and a matching DM10 pre-amp running Dynaudio Contour S 5.4 speakers the other night) and has an interesting M/C mix (unlike Live which...
Nope - it was De Do Do Do that was redone (on the DTS CD and SACD M/Ch). There is ongoing debate as to whether it was a demo used or a tape from the '86 sessions
It's a pity that the M/C mixes by Bob Ludwig suck when compared to the David Tickle mixes ported from the DTS CD. This is one of the first, but certainly not the last, case of Electronic Unwrap encouraging laziness in the mixers.
There is the risk that ToD will be cut in the UK version. I wouldn't be pre-ordering because this title will be loss leadered come November. $70-ish would be a realistic K-Mart/Big W price.
It's now virtually impossible to get R4 players at a retail level in Australia and NZ. Whilst they are labelled as such, most players do not actually have region coding.
Just on the Copy 'Control', the US versions are proper CDs, the rest of the world gets corrupted garbage. Needless to say, I'm not paying $A20 to listen to 36kbps MP3s on my computer. After reading the favorable reviews, Kazaa here I come...
