Will Blu-Ray make all of our receivers obsolete?

Wow -- we'll adopt a standard as long as it's ours. How "big" of them.

For anyone still interested in the DVB 318, bestbuy.com just put this on sale (either today or yesterday).

Audio drop out culprit: receiver, DVD player, DVD media, or cable?

Well, that kind of stinks, because other than these occasional drop outs, it's been a champ. Guess it gives me a good excuse to snag one of the upscaling DVD players while you can still get one that does it over component (albeit with a hack).

how does satellite do with snow?

I concur with what others have said. I have the HD triple LNB dish, and have probably only lost signal about 1 - 2 times a year. Never for snow that I can remember, only for either torrential rain or really bad thunderstorm, and the outages weren't that long. I've had no issues with pixellation...

Audio drop out culprit: receiver, DVD player, DVD media, or cable?

I'm glad I noticed this thread. I have the Toshiba 4800 DVD player, and have noticed drops on all of the LOR Extended Versions. I was really getting annoyed with it this past weekend watching ROTK. For that one, I know I was using the DTS-ES track; for the other LOTR DVDs I was probably watching...

Question on speaker placement and 6.1 vs 7.1

The dolby web site offers really good diagrams and tips on speaker placement for 6.1 and 7.1. As far as running 6.1 on a 7.1 system, you'll most likely need to consult your receiver's owners manual. In mine (Denon), it specifically tells which of the surround back outputs to use. Then, in the...

    Mirage speakers

Give me about a week. I currently have the FRX-7, FRX-C, and FRX-R speakers, and just ordered the OM-C3 from a local Tweeter (wish I saw that audio advisor price before I did that). My main two reasons for the upgrade was wanting a better center, and the desire to go 6.1 (I'm moving the FRX-C to...

    (2) SUBS for the price of (1) SVS = something to think about, or laugh at?

I'm a little surprised no one has replied to this question, but the SVS website has frequency graphs for various points in quite a few movies. Go to their homepage, click on Questions, FAQs, then "What are some great bass demos". For example, the "Where we are grown" scene from the Matrix has...

    Newbie HD TV questions...

You are correct -- my bad. It's really the DVD Player that turns it into 480p, but the DVD material is really 480i.

    Newbie HD TV questions...

That's just what most TV makers have chosen to support, 1080i. True HiDef content (in America) must be either 1080i or 720p. I don't know of any tube TVs that support both natively, although there might be a few. More common is to natively support 480i and 1080i. Some plasmas natively support...

    Phillips 30PW85OH Questions

In that case, why bother with a new TV at all right now? I don't think the incremental advantages for DVD alone really make buying an HDTV worth it right now. Take it from someone who already did that. I jumped on a cheap HDTV about a year ago (the 4x3 Hitachi), and if I had it to do over again...

    Phillips 30PW85OH Questions

I own both a 32" 4x3 TV (Hitachi 32UDX10S) and a 34" 16x9 TV (Philips 34PW9818). Granted my 16x9 is a better TV, but I don't think I could ever recommend a 4x3 aspect ratio TV to anyone. If you want to future proof, just get the 16x9 and be done with it. Most DVDs you watch now will be in 16x9...

Opinions on Replacing Toshiba SD4800 With RP91

Could one of you elaborate on what you mean by the tweakability of this player? I'm somewhat familiar with tweaking TVs (service menu), but I've never heard of tweaking a DVD player. As far as my scaling comment, I could have more accurately described it as a de-interlacer/line-doubler...

Opinions on Replacing Toshiba SD4800 With RP91

I have the Philips 34PW9818 television (which does not have a DVI input). This TV includes a scaler called PixelPlus, and DVDs can either come in through a 480P-only component input that bypasses PixelPlus, or through a 480I-only input that allows the use of PixelPlus. After some fairly...

?? on Video Switching thru Receiver-my best option?

I would not try running anything through the component in on the Samsung T165. I had that receiver for about week before taking it back due to disatisfaction. I noticed two problems running my DVD player through the T165 (and these issues were reported by other users as well on the other theater...

    32" HDTV Options

I don't quite understand why so many eliminate the Hitachi due to having one component imput. For how much cheaper it is than most comparable TVs, you can buy a component switcher. Also, many Home Theater receivers now include component switching. Also, I think the Hitachi screen is pretty flat...

    Acoustic Research Component cables?

Any thoughts or specs on the Phoenix Gold brand of component cables? I bought them before I was an active user of this website, otherwise I'd have probably bought one of the brands mentioned here. So, I'm wondering how they compare. Crutchfield sells this brand now, although I didn't buy them...

True representation of Panasonic RP82 found on link

I think Tweeter may be carrying the RP82 soon. I went in yesterday asking about it (actually, I couldn't remember the exact model number, but mentioned it was one step up from the RP62), and the salesperson looked into the computer and said they would have it in the store in about a week. He...

    Panny 32HX42 or Tosh 32HF72?

Just curious if you considered the Hitachi 32udx10s, currently one of the narrower 32" HDTV models. It's drawbacks include only one component input (not a problem if you have a reciever with component switching and adequate bandwidth), and it's not a flat screen. However, its picture is very...

    JVC 7800 VCR TBC Issue

Well, sounds like my VCR is currently 0 for 2. Unless I hear someone in the next day or so that thinks this in normal behavior, it's going back to Crutchfield.

    JVC 7800 VCR TBC Issue

After reading all the recommendations on this VCR, I took the plunge and got it from Crutchfield. Anyway, after attempting to use the TBC/NR feature, I've noticed on many movies that when turned on, it will actually create a several inch high strip of picture distortion at the top of the screen...

    Best Buy is Crazy!

Just wanted to echo what others have said in the BB versus CC debate. BB is worth shopping for music and movies, and that's definitely it. Typically the CC salepeople are not super knowledgeable, but they are at least helpful. Occasionally you will find someone that knows the stuff pretty well...

    Setting up Hitachi 32udx10s

I have this same TV (just bought it on Sunday), and haven't managed to be able to get into the service menu by performing the Input + Power. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or what. Incidentally, I read on a HDTV sight that the VSM "artifacts" on the Hitachi are not bad at all, so you...

Subwoofer & Speakers in apartments. Give me your advice!

We've lived in a condo with concrete walls since last November, and the neighbor directly above (a lawyer) says he has never heard anything from our condo. I usually listen at about -20. For shared living, I think concrete is just about the best way you can go. Of course, I also have the Mirage...

FCC Seeks Input on HDTV Digital Copy Protection

For all those that have been moaning about the possibility of some sort of copy protection like DVI/DHCP being put into place and obsoleting current HDTV sets, now you can do something about it. No rules were announced or put into place in yesterday's FCC meeting, but they put out a notice...

is there or is they not on the 3802

The front of the reciever should change to DOLBY D. I believer there's also a light on the front of the receiver to indicate a dolby digital/5.1 signal.

Can you do "the squeeze" on the Panasonic CT-32SF37

I have a Panasonic CT-32D10, which should be fairly similar to yours. For my TV, in the Pincushion Adjustments (D), look for where the option says XX D 01 -- XX will be your current default, which for me is 20. Adjusting that setting (01) performs the squeeze. After some extensive testing of...

    UPS is KILLING ME....

Any of you new SVS guys around the NW Chicago Suburbs thinking of adding yourself to AudiEnvy? My wife wouldn't let me buy one cause she thought they looked strange. Maybe if she heard and saw one in person it would be different. I live in Mt Prospect, so some of you posting to this thread...
