Keith, I haven't posted here for a while, but I think it's worth saying that the SCD-C222ES seems to be the superior player to the NS999ES. I know the 222ES's very well, and I have both look at the insides of the NS999ES and studied its circuitry. All the NS999ES is, is a DVP-NS755V with a...
Gee Keith, I wouldn't worry about frying a 555ES, but those little DVD players are another story. Remember, If I kill yours, then you get mine. Those darn Sony warrantys slow down my business. I'll see a big boost in 2006 I figure.
I haven't determined how much the mods are going cost yet. I am thinking somewhere around $550 for the full blown mods. What will change this is the fact that I plan to build an improved power supply for the ZapFilter board if its sound does not become more open in the bass. Lars uses a power...
Keith, The 555ES does indeed have better DACs than the CE775 and 222ES. However, the transport is the same, but all that extra metal in the player doesn't hurt for isolation's sake. You are correct that the 555ES only uses one DAC in stereo playback. Also, So far the mods have been a...
Now Keith,
I never said that the 555ES was 100% similar to the CE775.
However, they do have indentical transport assembly (disc tray, laser, pickup), and I believe they have the same main board (that would be the computer board with the DSPs and decoders).
The 555ES has completely...
Before I started putting the transformers in the CE775's, the difference between the players was that the 222ES seemed to be cleaner sounding, like scraping a layer of hash out of the background. After I began to install the transformers, the CE775 was just as clean, but the main difference...
Keith, A few more interesting facts about the 555ES: 1. It uses the same optical pick-up assembly as the CE775 and C222ES. 2. The buffer/LPF opamp is the same model, and same model as the buffer/low pass op-amp in the CE775. 3. The transport/disc tray is the same, though built into...
Keith, The 555ES has finally arrived. My first reaction was "Did he send a big receiver by mistake?" It is heavy. Before I even plugged it in, I did take a good look around inside. The player is much, much more impressive looking than the C222ES or CE775's that I have worked on. The didn't...
It would be possible in he 500V since it has a hard power switch in addition to the standby, but the 755V is in standby as soon as it's plugged in. The use of standby supplies complicates the use of a separate linear supply, but it is possible. However, the linear power supply would have to...
Eujin, Keith, thank you for the kind words.
I am still waiting for my 555ES because of a FedEx mix-up, but I am confident that it will be delivered tomorrow after I had a lengthy conversation with a lady at FedEx Ground HQ. I really can't wait to hear how it sounds, especially since Keith and...
I'll give it to you, but I guess it will take a few hundred hous for the triple-nickel to burn in, and by then I should have my AuriCaps all finished up in my preamp. Then I'll be set to evaluate.
What's taking them so long. I've already modified a 755V for a customer. It's a nice player, a refined 500V essentially. In my opinion easier to work on. Sounds good, too. However, it still isn't as nice as my modified 222ES. KeithH: You're going to love this! I bought a 555ES on Saturday...

I've bought several service manuals from him on PDF format, and they have much better detail than Sony's print version. Sometimes color, too.
That's exactly where it happens, on ALL of them. The tuner is built into the main board, and the metal shielding soldered on to the board is too heavy. They all crack there. If one hasn't cracked yet, then it's only a matter of time.
Thin circuit board + thermal expansion/contraction = cracked solder joints = RCA TV = JUNK. I've gotten a few nice trade-ins where if you're willing to resolder an entire circuit board by hand eventually make nice sets. Until they crack again. . .
I don't know if this will help you figure it out, but the Stereo outs on the CE775 output the exact same signal as the Multi-channel fronts. Essentially, you have two stereo outs on the SACD player. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
Check out one of the Sanus Euro series racks. I just got one from Sound seller (the four shelf one) for $219.00. It's got more than enough room for my 222ES. I can get you Ron's email address if you want to check one out.
It's been up and running for the past two and a half weeks. I just listened to four Rolling Stones SACDs tonight. This player just never ceases to amaze me! Now that we have more software, things are really going to take off.
I am comparing a modified C222ES to a modified CE775. The units have identical modifications installed. A modified CE775 will trounce a stock C222ES, I tried it. The modified C222ES is so good, that my die-hard, vinyl fan, Linn LP-12 owning father is considering buying one. That's the best...
That's not even possible. The outputs are paralleled. All component types and values after it splits off into 3 (to stereo, to MCH front, and to head phones op-amp) are the same. I've argued this on AA, and had to send a guy the schematic before he would conceed defeat. I've never heard this...
The parts are within specifications, and at least their attention to the stereo channels has remained constant. I don't think the difference in part suppliers will make that much of a difference.
Well, I've seen three different versions of the CE775. One rare version has the entire transpost assembly (what the disc tray rides on) made out of white plastic, while most of the players are made of black plastic. I have seen 3 or 4 different brands of coupling capacitors used on the...
I think you might really want to look at pages 22 and 23 of the PCM1738 datasheet with the output stage schematic. This DAC needs 3 op-amps per channel, while the DSD1702 only has 1, and it is just there to protect your preamp from high frequency and to buffer the output. Just FYI.
Forgive me if sound a little defensive, I just want to get my point across. I also have a tendancy to bash high-priced equipment, so I'm just going to let you know in advance.
That's probably true, but you should hear a DSD1702 type player when the DAC can actually operate properly (free...
Keith, you've brought this up a lot, and I think you should be the one to tell me how to improve build quality. I'm clueless. Should I weld a steel plate to the bottom of the player?
Perhaps the simple, yet extremely effective transport in the CE775/222ES is able to do everything your...
The 222ES uses the same audio output stage, and same opamp per the service manual. They use the same PC board in fact. The 222ES probably uses a little better coupling capacitors, but they are still not Black Gates.
I upgrade the power supply (diodes/caps), the clock, the analog coupling capacitors, and the RCAs. Makes a very noticeable improvement. Here's my website for pics and more details. www.SACDmods.com I only have 3 left.
I understand it is similar to Lip"fulla"shitz's paper, just in the form of a stupified rant against SACD. If you actually use your ears, then you know that they're both full of crap!
Too late. I purchased every single CE775 Oade had left (4). They arrived on Tuesday. Going with two...
