Try the Gamecube classifieds at IGN - that's where I found mine (although I've only seen a few sets up for trade or sale in the past few months). You're probably not going to find a really great deal though (if you find a used set at all), they seem to go for between $25 and $30 (shipped) used.

From what I've read the TS-1000 and the TSU-2000 are basically the same - the difference is that the 2000 has 2mb of memory and a built in universal database (which basically takes up the extra memory ;)). You should be able to use your 2000 .ccf in a 1000 with no problems.

Samsung makes a pretty nice flat screen that goes for around $400, youshould be able to find it at Best Buy. Out of the box it doesn't look all that wonderful but once you get it calibrated with VE or Avia it looks great.

I don't think you have to worry. For the autodetection to work the DVD player sends out a certain flag to the TV (it's encoded on the DVD) - as long as there's no flag on the game it shouldn't switch to widescreen mode.

I know this is going to sound obvious but have you checked the component cables on your dvd player? If you don't have one plugged in (or just not in all the way) or two of them are swapped it could make the colors look way off.
